42100 - Still a toy?
suffocation replied to nerdsforprez's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Is it stated clearly and unequivocally on the box that a smartphone is required to control the model? -
In terms of pure power and ignoring friction, two geared-down XLs easily overpower four ungeared Ls.

You can't really compare the two drivetrains. The Greyhound had a dedicated L motor per wheel and was built for speed and efficiency. I believe the challenge with this model is to have a powerful drivetrain with a gearbox and locking diffs that won't suffer from gears skipping even under high torque and/or sudden gear shifts.

So basically we're going from "batteries not included" to "smartphone not included". Makes perfect sense.

I'm still struggling to wrap my puny brain around the engineering of this masterpiece

Things are what you make of them. Some might use Lego as a toy, others as an educational tool, others as therapy and so on. I find it disturbing when people worry more about "what is that?" and less about "what can I do with that?". -

Call it any way you like - it's fun and it's educational. Price is irrelevant - we're not talking about a primary good here. Oh, and incidentally, if you compare 42100's part count and part type with 42030, the two sets are pretty much aligned. -
My phone could suck a golf ball through a garden hose so I guess I'll be rebricking the whole thing minus the motors and controllers and then I'll PF the hell out of it. It's good to be stuck in the 20th century, Pantera are still going strong here.

I almost squinted my eyes out at 0:14-0:16 but I can't really tell. Can't say I'd mind a z84 turntable.

That's an interesting perspective. Considering that the price is likely to drop to around €300 on Black Friday, that's still the equivalent of some 40 bottles of top-notch Nero d'Avola, which kinda sound more enjoyable than an excavator. Then again, a lack of MOC fodder means fewer chances to sip that sweet Sicilian nectar.

Said the troll who's never MOCed a pin in a beam. The chassis yes, the whole crane no since the end model is likely to weigh in excess of 5 kg. I went for reach over power. Ha, I guess I'll be out of money for new furniture by then Those outriggers are standard fare but it's hard to give them any decent reach without being ridiculously flimsy.

Inspiring project, Erik I also really enjoyed your write-up and agree with every point you made. I knew I wasn't going to buy the Chiron - not even at the usual 30% discount - when the instructions were uploaded and I saw this: That's just begging for trouble. So I wasn't surprised when a slew of (mostly novice) users started reporting high friction in the rear axle. Lego's rationale was clearly "let's make a million submodules so it's easy but exciting to build" - fine and dandy, but they almost killed the model's functionality.

This turd sandwich is reselling your instructions: https://www.facebook.com/groups/403386893171574/permalink/1146279368882319/?sale_post_id=1146279368882319

I was scrolling through the pictures wondering, "Okay, but where's the Leg... oh" Sublime level of detail
