Signature Technic Quirks?
suffocation replied to jwarner's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I always make sure the end model is laden in greasy fingerprints because it means I've been eating lots of pizza which means I've been good to myself. -
That says a lot about how many pointless tiny pieces have been thrown in to bloat the part count. My crane weighs more - eight motors ain't peanuts - but is just over 3000 parts and is structurally more sound than 42082. More O frames and dogbones would've served a far better purpose than those handfuls of white 1L beams.

Indeed, I read some product sheets by Tadano and LIebherr and couldn't find a single model with a V engine. I guess 42082 has one because it looks cool, which is understandable from a marketing point of view. As for the stiffness, I tried placing three 1 KG weights on the chassis and didn't notice any sagging, so that's good. The combination of O frames, dogbones, L motors and servos works really well. I really wanted to use Claas tyres but I think they look too small. This is what it looks like with the third-party tyres I linked above: A quick test revealed three welcome positives: - there's no need for four shocks per wheel. In fact, with three KGs on top and just two shocks per wheel, they compress about one-third of the way. It's all about the mounting point (ahem Bugatti ahem) - the drivetrain works even with all that load on top. Since I plan on keeping the model a lot less panelled up, with more guts showing, I doubt I'll be adding that much weight on top anyway - the outriggers work quickly and flawlessly. I can't imagine why the outriggers on 42082 were geared down so much since they still won't lift the model. And one huge negative: - the custom hubs refuse to hold up under all that weight when the model is being driven, so I'll have to come up with something else.

Look at it this way - compared to the red crane, the BWE has far, far more necessary parts. The red crane could've easily been pulled off just as well or even better with at least a thousand fewer pieces - but astronomical part counts are an irresistible marketing gimmick, so there you go.

I wasn't pleased with my first rough terrain crane, so I'm redesigning and rebuilding it from scratch. I've got a very rudimental carrier chassis done for now. Current features: - 4x4 drive (4 L motors geared down 1:11.67) - four-mode steering (2 servo motors): front-wheel steering, rear-wheel steering, four-wheel countersteering, four-wheel crab steering - independent suspension - 2-stage outriggers (1 L motor) - fake 6-cylinder inline engine Typically, rough terrain cranes have floating axles, which I find rather hard to implement in a model like this without compromosing rigidity and proportions. My previous crane had long-travel pendular axles that worked flawlessly but also took up a lot of space, so I decided to go with independent suspension. It's far from realistic but it allows for a lower, tougher chassis. A previous version of the chassis had planetary hubs but they caused far too much friction, so I had to ditch them and gear down more before the differentials. I hope this doesn't come back to bite me in the rear end when the model's done with all its sweet weight. The hubs are loosely based on Didumos' Greyhound hubs. Portal hubs are out of the question. (Those grey 2L half liftarms are temporary.) Tyres will most likely be these: https://www.amazon.it/dp/B07FCLHXBZ/ref=pe_3310731_189395851_TE_3p_dp_1

The editing skills of some builders are just as inspiring as their builds, so why rule them out? In any case, I'd like to think that votes are cast based on the quality of the build and not the video - or have so many voters dumbed themselves down to Serena-Williams level?

So sad to see so much back and forth on the rules. It's an online Lego contest - the best thing, which by the way is worth so much more than any prize Bugatti or the likes, should be the smorgasbord of new building ideas and techniques the contest is bound to generate and that users can take and put their own spin on for future MOCs.

Got the black quarter rings from PaB, so I'm rebuilding the whole thing from scratch. Done a very, very rudimental carrier chassis for now. Features independent suspension (unrealistic but allows for a lighter, tougher chassis), planetary reduction, 120 mm RC tyres, fake engine and an unusual take on two-stage outriggers. Kitty doesn't look impressed.

Great work there! Have you got a link where to buy the rear wheels?

It's dated August 30th 2018 and nobody ever mentioned clone sets not being available anymore. Thanks, found it! https://www.thebrickfan.com/lego-wins-lawsuit-against-lepin/

Hate to play the necromancer, but does anyone have any news about this, maybe from more reliable sources? (The English used in the article is nothing short of execrable). https://customizeminifiguresintelligence.wordpress.com/2018/08/30/lepin-defeated-in-lego-lawsuit-15-million-yuan-damage-and-unrepentant/

It was probably in the video but I must've missed it - how much did you gear the drive motors down? And were you running the BuWizz on slow, normal or fast? (Or ludicrous, if they were 2.0 units). I reckon that if you scale the model down to fit the Claas wheels better, the whole model'll be a lot more manageable and you can turn what is already a very good crane into a masterpiece.

Sariel, I know your English is pretty good and you have a degree in English literature, but take it from an educated native speaker - it doesn't take exclamation marks and strong words to make a scathing comment. That's the only criticism I can level at you because other than that, you have no idea how grateful I am for all the hard work you do. It's thanks to you that I got back into Lego, started building my own stuff and found a better cure than popping pills. Edit: I see the two blokes above me had written pretty much the same thing

Erik, I agree with all the points you raise. (And by the way, I want to thank you again for the feedback you've given me in the past year because when it comes to constructive criticism, you're pretty hard to outdo. I always study your feedback to other builders, too, because there's always a lesson to be learnt.) I can't help wondering, though, if Sariel's tone has to do with all the Lego-related shite he has to deal with. He's given a lot over the years but has got back little or nothing; and I see more and more people (not here but on other boards) that treat him like they're entitled to even more from him. Case in point: someone shared his latest video on the Italian FB page Brickpatici and what was the tone of the average comment? "omg sariel sux cuz he wont maek instrukshunz 4 free." Not to mention the countless flabbergasting comments he gets on his own page. Or the vitriol he got when he added a Paypal donation button (was that the trigger, Sariel?) because "omg sarielz steulin r munny he sux he alreddi gets free legoes and i rote him 4 free instrukshunz and he nevah ansurd wtf hes a nazi." I'm probably projecting here, but when you realise the sheer amount of dildos surrounding you, it becomes kind of hard to keep your cool and you end up blasting people who simply don't deserve it.

I completely understand this. I see it happen the whole time on every single Italian FB Lego page, too. Recently, someone posted pics of their build of Lucio's Dump Truck and got barely a handful of replies; other folks post pictures of their BOXED Porsches and Bugattis and everyone swarms to the topic like so many flies to a steaming pile of rhino dung. Then again, Die Bevölkerung bekommt die Regierung, die sie verdient.

For an instant I thought the little model was of a mite.
