  1. I echo the previous two comments about cannons/guns. I didn't pay any attention to the 35 in the original topic but it isn't historically correct (but pursuing historic accuracy is for you, the builder, to decide - not us!) I know the Brick Bounty has a full-size cannon on a turntable at the stern, but in reality turntables weren't used extensively until the 19th century and even then they weren't used in that position. I suggest an even number of guns, with all of them on wheeled carriages (or an implied wheeled carriage if you don't want them rolling around). Chasers and swivel guns - the small antipersonnel swivels, not swivel cannons - would never count as part of a ship's rated armament (as kurigan already pointed out) just because they weren't effectively used as part of a ship's broadside fire. I wouldn't try arming both decks with the standard Lego cannon. Go for it on the main gun deck. (I wouldn't worry about their large size because the standard minifig is either a small child or a midget or dwarf, not a tall adult, and because of this the scale seems okay although the ship hull pieces are way too small for those big guns, but that's Lego's problem.) The spar deck will definitely look better and have far more room for men and other items if you equip it with smaller custom guns. It may look daunting if you've never built one but it's really not that complicated and I'm pretty sure a lot cheaper than buying enough of the standard cannons for both decks. I'll try to post a pic or a link to some pics when I get a chance (I'll have to find them first!) Keep us posted as this progresses.
  2. Beautiful little build, Gideon. The white architectural elements really look perfect and the gold elements are the best accent color in my opinion. I also like how you've interspersed bits of green among the cobblestone. Besides filling out the base better it also looks more realistic, like moss or something. I see you've titled this as your first freebuild. Will you be counting your character intro topic as a freebuild too? Good work as always.
  3. I also think the updated pic sells the concept more convincingly. The figure on horseback seems more prominent now.
  4. Pretty much my thoughts exactly. I do like the new Bluecoats a lot, but not the Admiral's daughter - maybe they included her for gender equality but any set with "fort" in its name needs more than one lousy soldier. She isn't dressed for the period anyway - not by normal standards. But I've swapped heads/hair to create male officers with narrow waists! The bigger issue for me though is the pirate minifigs. They still look cartoonish after all these years. PotC proved Lego can do really good pirate-era figs - but with these sets they gave us dudes in blue jeans! Yeah, a few of them look good (Shipwreck Defense, green shirt from the fort) but the stripe thing is seriously not cool anymore. And the cook from the Brick Bounty has to be one of the worst Pirates 'figs ever created. I won't say this run was junk but they could've at least done a more imaginative job rehashing those old ideas and gave us a good Bluecoat ship. I wonder if this topic is even useful anymore and I wonder if we'll ever see any of our ideas come to pass.
  5. PICS!! Or a single photo anyway... You can always count on Phred! She looks beautiful in white - as kurigan said, she does indeed have a ghostly air about her. But it's really quite charming apart from the fact that half the shrouds are missing (and yes, I understand why from the photo.) I dare say it looks better than solid black by a sizeable margin. Good work.
  6. Beautiful little build. The woodwork is great and looks really nice arched out over the cobblestone. I also like the steep rake of the roof and the window is nice. But it seems poor Phred has lost his headgear entirely!
  7. Mister, you are on a building roll. I like the overall composition and the angle of the fortifications is nice. The palisade is simple but effective, and the rock wall is a neat idea, although I think it might be a bit early for that. I would think stone would replace the wood entirely at some point though. The vegetation is really good and all the activity presents a series of mini-scenes that work out well together. Good work. Unless I am dreadfully mistaken the opening of a challenge permits you to begin posting entries right away so go for it!
  8. You have some tough questions! I can't answer this directly but I'm guessing it will be open to whatever you, the members, want to build. There would be big and small in the real world and there are numerous classifications in the game rules (town, city, large city etc). Since it's necessary to build one's way up the charts (at least for gameplay) eventually you can expect to see all sizes simultaneously. But since we've just started that will take a while!
  9. That is definitely a unique building - and it looks pretty good! Those are my favorite windows and the Brick Bounty look of the lower level is neat. I like the walk-out design of the top floor - it would give a commanding view of the surroundings. The big center column is kind of distracting though. It competes with the other interior details. Judging from her attire, I think Harley's biggest problem is that she's been watching too much Pirates of the Caribbean! I find the bra-shaped white of the Quinnsville flag a bit humorous. They must've been ahead of their time. Good build overall and I approve.
  10. Well this is definitely starting things with a bang - and quite literally for our daring cast of characters. Good idea for an intro and the use of the latest set style. I don't mind the lighting - it gives it the appearance of a late-night rescue under a full moon. Welcome aboard and keep us going with the story!
  11. Lovely canoe. The hull is beautifully sculpted and I like the tan line for some reason. Those outriggers are pretty neat as well. The sail is just about perfect for this type of thing. As previously suggested, I think some tilting/listing of the whole thing would produce a better overall presentation, but you might have to make some modifications to that superb water to do it. Showing the natives fishing is a natural idea and makes good use of that net piece. They obviously have a particular disdain for clothing. Perhaps you and your fellow Oleanders can enlighten them if and when you interact. Quintessential Gideon - neat, tidy, smooth, and of course welll built and photographed. Keep it up.
  12. Now that is one creative challenge entry. I love the micro island - it just looks perfect. The breaks between baseplates are easy to spot in the unedited pic but even so I can't readily identify the plate it's sitting on - a classic pirate island baseplate I assume? Good work overall and nice effect on the edited pic too.
  13. Cousarmy001 is definitely correct about the terminology, and I thought about it to but chose not to say anything. Ultimately if you want a two-decker then by all means build a two-decker and we'll classify it accordingly. I'm guessing your intention is to build the ship up to about the height of the cabin - it looks like it would work out pretty close with two gun decks and should look really good. I would stick to three square sails on the fore- and mainmast and try something like Phred mentioned on the mizzen. But if you have to have four on the mainmast I'd put at least three on the foremast and probably the same on the mizzemast to indicate a later (19th century) style of rigging. I'm slowly building a big ship-of-the-line that consists mainly of parts from this same set, plus the other related sets. It's a fun challenge. But so far I've got all my cannons (about 100) the old-fashioned way. Hope this all helps and happy building.
  14. Ah. I see. When I said I don't think we need it I wasn't suggesting that people shouldn't do it - I just don't think it's really a necessary thing for the faction to function fully. I have no problem with that type of post - and if everyone did it all the time it would provide an easy look at all of the faction's MOCs. I will definitely keep this in mind for my own builds.
  15. Well whaddya know... our esteemed Faction Leader & Project Overlord knows a thing or two about MOCing! But it only makes sense - you don't get that position by being a complete dunce. That's why I'm not in control - I'm still struggling with the concept of matching shapes and colors and still can't tie my own shoes. Okay, enough nonsense. This is indeed a unique building and a lovely one at that. The green roof is beautiful and I like the stacked windows. I generally don't like the use of purple unless I have a creative use for it and this is definitely a creative and appealing use. The angled flags look really neat hanging out over the entryway. It's a very eye-pleasing build overall. Good work.
  16. Wait... you built THAT from a depleted collection? Perhaps I should turn in my cutlass and pistols, put my powdered wig on a shelf and hang up my tricorne. It has a really nice classic look and I like those colors. I'm pleasantly surprised by the blue - I've been wondering if it's use would be an automatic felony in Corrington. I removed all the original blue accents from my SOTL WIP because I was afraid Admiral Woodbrose would tie me to a raft, set me adrift, treble-shot the guns and give me a full broadside. And considering the nature of your other MOC I'm not sure I want to try him! Seriously, this is a fine vessel and I like the way you explained the depleted rigging in the story. You have a nice diverse cast of characters and I am totally digging that groovy sleeveless red coat! Good work.
  17. Welcome to Eurobricks matey! (You picked the best theme by far...) This is a promising project and already looks a lot better than what it's based on. The main mast does look a little odd though - too much of a gap between the middle sails. It's a little too tall in relation to the fore and mizzen - maybe you could shorten it or raise the other two a little. I look forward to seeing your progress. Are you familiar with Bricklink? You can buy all the cannons you want, or buy them straight from Lego's site. Eurobricks is not an image hosting site. You'll need to upload your pics to Flickr, Brickshelf, Bricksafe, Photobucket, etc and then deeplink them to this site. Good luck and keep it up!
  18. The addition of the jib really transforms the overall look. It just looks so much more balanced that way. Before the bowsprit just looked forlorn and useless. Much better!
  19. Excellent use of the third freebuild. The building itself is beautiful in those colors. It has a simple classic look and the way you arched the windows is nice. My only crtitque is that the exposed studs on the roof look kind of rough. The spinning machine is just brilliant. I can't speak for accuracy of design but it certainly looks legitimate from what little I've seen. I like the big roll of fabric on the end - very simple but very effective. That's a great way to get started in commerce. I'm going to study that design because it looks so good I might have to make one myself. (You can tell I wasn't the aforementioned Corry who designed it - I was probably the dim-wit they tested the safety features on!) Again, this is excellent. I approve!
  20. This is a cute house, and the bright colors are fitting for the tropics, but it looks more modern than historic to me. (Perhaps the Gulf Oil colorscheme is doing it!) An older type of door or some other historic details would be nice. Just showing a minifig in period clothing would help a lot. I like the ivy climbing the walls and how you integrate real-world issues into the story. Keep it up.
  21. Nice ship. I'm not generally a fan of brick-built sails but this manages to look pretty good anyway. I like the low hull design, choice of colors and details. The minifigs look great too; I don't typically picture those helmets in these settings but it looks quite natural. The armament is ambitious! Perhaps closing the sides in around the guns for true gunports would be useful for a vessel this low. I answered your question regarding the awarding of DBs for these third+ freebuilds in the main intro topic but I'll post it here as well. To start out we're going to wait until the three week approval period is over and then award all the earned DBs at once just to keep it simple. Eventually we may award them in the month you earn them (for approval periods spanning two months) rather than all at once. As I said before I'll be tallying these up, and I'm cleared to give approvals for anyone. I approve.
  22. This is a nice design overall; however a good full-view pic is sorely missing. I like the hull shape and colors but the absence of any sails or rigging is also notable. A bowsprit would be nice depending on the sail plan. The armament is very reasonable for something this size and the anchors are a great use of those parts. You have a fine crew as well. The shadows somewhat obscure a few details. If you could get an overall pic with a little better lighting it would be great. Nice start to shipbuilding and keep it up.
  23. I don't think we need lots of builds posted here but since this is an age-of-sail project I rather like the idea of posting ship pics in this thread. She's another welcome addition to the fleet.
  24. To start with we're going to award the full sum after the three weeks is over just to keep things simple. I think we can safely assume that most of the third+ freebuilds' three-week approval periods will span part of two months. As this progresses there is the possibility that we may award any DBs earned at the end of the first month and award the rest when the three weeks are over. EDIT: changed wording for clarity
  25. This has a nice classic feel to it. The white and tan look good together and the lovely roof looks pretty realistic in those colors. The interior is beautiful - simple, yes, but everything is smooth and tidy. The colorful quilt is neat and the furniture is nice. It looks pretty cozy, which would be important for a sailor's wife. And of course the animals are a good feature although a few plants of some type would be nice. Good work. Edit: I approve!
