[COR-FB3] A brawl in Bellson
Captain Dee replied to CelesAurivern's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
The concept of a tavern fight is certainly accurate, although... I'm still wrapping my mind around the idea that 2 women from that time would take on and whup 4 grown men, and tough-looking characters at that. But it's your story. The broken-down door looks great, and the tavern facade is nice, but the black walls and lack of windows make it look pretty plain. Unless, of course, the black is a signal color and the lack of windows is to conceal the activities inside... -
Yep, that's definitely going Into The Wild. This might be my favorite of your BoBS builds so far. The water looks great, and I like the dense variety of colorful plants. Very good story to go with it, and while I don't like mixing yellows & fleshies, I know just what you mean about not having enough variety of just one or the other. Good work.

[ESL-MCRA1] Collecting the pay
Captain Dee replied to Sir Stig's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
The overhead shot shows the vessel's lines well, and the overall view is nice. But the shadows are a bit strong again and hide some of the details in the last pic. -
[ESL-FB1] No one writes to the Colonel, Weelond
Captain Dee replied to Sir Stig's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
That's a pretty good interior. I like the furniture and the massive walls are more realistic. The windows are neat, but the floor seems rough in comparison to the rest of the scene. The shadows are a bit strong too, but beyond that it's a nice office. -
Wait... you mean those native men know the meaning of the word "babe?" Huh... they must be more advanced than I thought... Beautiful little scene. The tree leaf pieces make good bushes/shrubs and the angle of the build is nice for the square base. Maybe the sand is a little plain, but overall it's a good layout. And the croc half submerged in the water is a fine feature. Good work.

[SR - FB] Revenge on Mardier
Captain Dee replied to MiloNelsiano's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Lovely setting. The MMV is a nice starting point and you've built some really good surroundings. The sand green masonry looks nice for showing the tide line, and the pier and cobblestone look good. But the minifigs really steal the show. The standard pirate 'figs have too much exposed yellow skin to be useful as fleshies, but these other themed 'figs can be made to look really good in these settings as you've obviously discovered. Good work. -
Beautiful build, and unique story to go with it! I like the trees and the platform is really nice. You've really captured the jungle atmosphere. Good job with the minifigs, and for portraying the intrigue so well. Keep it up.

Do I sound excessive? Somebody's gotta do it now that KB is gone... -
[COR - FB] Arlinsport Blacksmith
Captain Dee replied to SilentWolf's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
That is one seriously red roof, with a nice blacksmith shop underneath it! It's a basic arrangement but I like it, and the first two pics showing opened & closed are a good idea. The bellows is interesting - I had to study the design a bit but it makes good use of the parts, especially the upside-down dish/saucer. All the tools and raw materials help bring it to life. I understand the temptation to show people working sleeveless in hot environments, but my understanding of blacksmith attire is that heavy clothing was preferred to protect against sparks. At the very least normal sleeves and a vest or apron were typically worn, plus some good leather gloves during the actual forging of the wrought iron. I've watched recreated historic forges in operation and it looks like sweltering work that would require incredible stamina. Also, a visible chimney would be nice, and would improve the exterior views quite a bit. But those are minor concerns. This is a good companion to your horse business storyline. Good work and keep it up. -
[COR - Ch1 Cat B] The sheltered cove
Captain Dee replied to Bregir's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Very good entry. I really like the composition of this one. The elevated hut is really good - the arches and roof in particular - and the rocks forming the edge of the cove are nice. All the different minifigs make for a busy setting and the boat approaching through those lovely waves looks great. The shields and other metal objects are a good idea; I've been wondering if someone would include that type of thing in the challenge. The color of brass or bronze is probably best from a historic view, as ferrous metallurgy (iron smelting) was more difficult to accomplish. I like the two written points-of-view - it provides a more interesting story than one, provided they're sufficiently different (and they are). The overall story is very good. Good work. -
Excellent video review. This story-like format is an improvement over what was already a very good series of reviews. The sounds are great as always, and the pirates' laughter is perfect. Keep it up.

Printed all the way, baby!! Actually the newer two-color/marbled parrot is decent but I still prefer the colorful old type by a big margin. Solid color is kinda bland, even though some of them really do look that way. I'd like to see a new mold, with wings spread. But that's another subject altogether. Interesting subject for a poll!

[COR - FB] Returning to the fiancee
Captain Dee replied to SilentWolf's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
I think the siding turned out pretty good, and it looks well enough like clapboard to me. I also like the roof, and the arched windows are unique, although an actual frame or lattice would look even better if you could fit one. I also think a ground-floor window or two would be nice but it might be difficult to do without completely redoing the siding. I really like the statue; I've been wanting to make one exactly like this (with the white wig) and still haven't done it. The pool/fountain is nice too. Elizabeth is very sharply dressed, and Micah looks polished in that uniform. I don't usually like red & blue together, but the pants actually look decent along with the red epaulettes. It's a unique look for sure. Now that he's home, perhaps we'll hear more of this story, eh? Keep it up. -
[SR - MRCA 1] Results: Fate of the Dogged Wench
Captain Dee replied to MiloNelsiano's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
That's a unique and interesting story, and the build turned out pretty well I'd say. I really like the first pic, apart from everything being so tilted. These MCRA builds have certainly added some visible action to what was otherwise behind-the-scenes stuff. -
Beautiful cutter, Sebeus! The Beatrix is one of my favorites, and this is a very good color-matching companion. The custom hull is nice, both bow and stern, and I like the simplified custom rigging as well. Excellent work once more.

[Investigation] Who is the Captain Ironhook?
Captain Dee replied to Captain Fortune's topic in LEGO Pirates
I'm far from an authority on this subject, but I do know this: one of the old commercials shows the Renegade Runner (Ironhook) and Skull's Eye Schooner (Redbeard) pulling up in battle formation and then duking it out over a chest of gold, which I think was swiped by a shark at the end. I think most of the "facts" about Ironhook were just made up by fans who simply had to have a juicy story for every character. -
[COR-FB] Resistance is not futile
Captain Dee replied to CelesAurivern's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
McReily is quite a character. The setting is nice with all the palm trees and other vegetation under foot. I like how you've greatly expanded the tree tops from 4 to 8 leaves - they look so much better that way. This does seem like a realistic encounter of sorts, assuming the natives understand what he's trying to tell them.- 9 replies

[COR - FB2 Feb] The Department of Time, Arlinsport
Captain Dee replied to Bregir's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
This does look like a church but it's a really nice facade for this purpose too. The concept is neat, and if you don't mind I might do something similar at some point. I like all the arches and it has a towering presence for the small base. An interior shot showing all the inner workings would be nice though... Good work, and how fitting from a fellow Corry.- 15 replies

Creative challenge entry! It's a nice little scene with the stacked barrels, tree, and bonfire for brewing the goodies. A little humor doesn't hurt either. I like it.
-
Beautiful landing scene. I like the cluster of trees and the surf breaking on the beach is lovely. The sand has good form and color and the rest of the plants fill the background well. Your old minifigs look great in that setting and the flagpole being hoisted is a nice feature. Good work.
-
Hmm. Do you have a thing for unsuccessful hangings? Neat little build again. The tan sand should please the ones who didn't appreciate white and the white border really stands out. The tree and minifigs are nice. Edit: This is sufficiently different from the other scene and nicely done, so I approve.

[ESL-FB3] This Ole House
Captain Dee replied to Captain Braunsfeld's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
I was referring to the fact that those frames (regardless of color) always seem to want to lean when the tops are arched, since they aren't rigidly attached at the top. I'm not sure if all the 4-wide frames are exactly the same, but the black ones from the Brick Bounty are really bad for this (actually they aren't even perfectly straight upright to start with - they seem warped). When I stacked them for my Captain's Corner, they leaned in or out so bad every time I moved it that I had to attach a 1x6 plate to the top window and build the arch over it to hold them upright. It kinda ruined the look but at least it holds together. With single frames like this it's not as big a problem vs stacking them, but it does take some patience working with them. They definitely look better with arched tops. -
[ESL-FB] Small home and cordwainer’s shop
Captain Dee replied to Capt Wolf's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Beautiful house. The scale is perfect for the base and the style and colors are nice. Working and selling from the home is a good period idea, and the sign over the door is a good feature. I like all the different windows, and the two on either side of the roof are integrated well. The cobblestone and landscaping add a lot to the presentation besides just having a lone house sitting there. Good work. -
[ESL-FB3] This Ole House
Captain Dee replied to Captain Braunsfeld's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Another lovely house! The overall design reminds me of the first, which is fitting. I like white as the primary color, and the architectural elements are really good. The columns make good use of that piece, the fences are nice and of course the fountains are a good feature. I like the arched tops of the windows, and I see the one red frame gave you the same leaning problem I encountered when I tried it. The lime green dome doesn't really bother me - I like the design even if the color doesn't match the rest. Good cast of characters again as well. Your approval period goes through the end of the day Feb 29. Good work and I approve. -
[COR - MRCA 1] Escape at Holders Rock

Just beautiful. The micro ships are fantastic and the landscape is really good. The tower is a neat feature too. Good work.
