  1. There's a collection of wikipedia article links in the main index of the general Pirates forum.
  2. This is a unique vessel. The rigging gives it an Eastern flair and that hull looks incredibly strong. It seems older overall and I like the basic look. But I think it would benefit from a big increase in sail area - as it is the sails look out of proportion to the hull. That's my favorite custom cannon barrel design and I use it as well to preserve the roundness of the barrel (because square-edged bricks just don't look right). The carriage is really good too - I just wish it was another color so the details would show a little better. Overall this is a good vessel. I approve.
  3. Ah... so you're taking advantage of the intro as a freebuild. This has to be the funniest intro yet, but it's also built pretty good to match. I suppose it's all a sign of things to come!
  4. That's certainly a unique scene. I like how you varied both the water and the base to match it. The chicken coop is really good too. As soon as I saw the dorsal fin I thought, "that pig's a goner" and so I had to laugh when I saw the outcome. This is pretty small, but the effort is there, so: I approve.
  5. Very good scene, and a lovely large layout. The buildings all look pretty good, but the one in the middle has the look more than the others. There's so much going on you have to look really close to avoid missing something. That level of detail is always welcome. The amount of activity is just what I would expect in a setting like this. Good work.
  6. Beautiful little house. The dark red looks so much better than the standard red. The masonry brick pieces sure are nice and they sure are expensive. The roof turned out well but the interior details are the best part in my opinion. The stool is nice but the bed is fantastic. I like the gravel in place of cobblestone - it's something different for a change and I think it fits the setting. Of course building pirate-era stuff is fun! (It's the only reason I'm here...) I approve.
  7. This is a beautiful little scene. The shack is just brilliant and looks inviting with all the leaves and birds on top. The boat is a nice bonus, and even if the rigging isn't perfect it's still a lot better than nothing. There's a lot going on for such a small base which is impressive. This is one of my favorite entries on the basis of creativity and artistry. Keep it up.
  8. This is a fine vessel overall. The hull in particular is really good, from the shaping to the unique colorscheme to the modular design. I like that lantern design - they're very simple but effective and I think they look great on the stern of a ship. But I think those sails are a little overdone for a vessel such as this. The presentation is really good, of course! Besides being humorous, I think you picked the perfect facial expressions for the characters. I'm liking this Lucy - beautiful, snappy, sassy all the way. Keep it up.
  9. This is a neat idea. The base is a little dull but the rocks and vegetation atop the cliff are nice. I think a bare trunk would look better on the tree unless those leaves are supposed to be vines. The minifig posing is really good on both levels and the photos capture the action well. Good work.
  10. Looking past the brutality, this is a very nice creation. The rocky beach is interesting and unique, and I like how the plants fill out the background. The subject matter is portrayed really well, from the bonfire to the big center pole to the attendant guards. I'm guessing the curved white slopes are supposed to represent waves. I like the concept but I think wider pieces would look much more like waves than the narrow parts, which look kind of odd to me. I don't favor demonizing other factions - I mean, Oleon can't catch a break from anyone with regards to how they interact with the natives. But that's not really for me to judge: to each his own. Good work overall.
  11. This is a fine little build. I like the watery base and the angle of the canoe is nice. Those natives and their various effects make for a detailed scene and the story sounds interesting. Keep it up.
  12. Uh... approvals anyone? This looks very appropriate for the setting - a new small building in a new settlement. The planking looks great and I like the roof, although I think it would look better if it hung over the walls a little. The interior is nice and the ships-in-bottles are a neat idea. The micro ship is a good design too and looks right at home over the door. Topping it off is one serious customer. Good work. I approve.
  13. That is a fabulous recreation of an official set. It's obvious what it's based on and your remake fits the set name so much better. The towering terrain is nice, as are the extra palm trees, but the waterfall pouring from the mouth of the temple is the best feature to my eyes. The bridge, swinging monkey, and extra figs are good additions as well. I've been wanting to redo some of these (lackluster) Pirates sets and this is an excellent example of the type of thing I'd envisioned - only your idea is far more creative and interesting! I especially like the first pic and the last overhead pic, and the part built by your boyfriend is pretty cool too. Good idea to use it here, and tell him we all like it. Great work!
  14. The palisade, hut, and vegetation are all really nice. I like the built-up base and the varying turf is much better than a flat base. I would think the skulls on poles would be a sure sign of what's to come, and the buried explorer is a neat feature. Good work and good luck to Leon!
  15. Excellent composition. The irregular base, thick vegetation, and angular column of men make a very nice scene. There's a very serious air to it without even reading the story or studying the faces that closely. I am impressed with how you've varied the terrain underfoot rather than putting all the men on the same level. Good work and keep it up.
  16. Excellent micro/forced perspective my friend. The overall composition is lovely although I agree a little less focus on the background would be better. I especially like the ship, the white and tan structures, and the trees; and of course the figure on horseback is well-placed to demonstrate the concept. Good work. I believe I am cleared to grant an approval.
  17. Welcome aboard my fellow Corry! Both these builds are quite nice but the study is especially impressive. The three-layer hardwood base is lovely and the decorated arched windows are beautiful. You have managed to include an enormous amount of detail without it looking cluttered. I like the palisades atop the wall - it's a unique approach - and the expansive table looks good with all the maps and other items even if it has some exposed studs. It's just what a proper study should look like. The landscape looks great with the olive plant pieces and those saplings towering over the soldiers. The posing is indeed good - but mostly the redcoats make it beautiful... Nice intro freebuild, glad to have you among our ranks, and looking forward to what you build next!
  18. This is a nice peaceful scene, and the natives are a welcome change. I like the basic design of the terrain - it's very believable rather than being all flat and the rolling water effect is nice. I like the elevation of the boat - and it would look even better with the stern sunk partially into the water and possibly turned to avoid all the right angles. The activity is very realistic and you have a lot going on within the confines of the size limit, but I also agree that turning a few of the minifigs would enhance the overall look. Good work and keep it up.
  19. It warms my heart to see the jungle wasteland being whacked down and turned into something useful and productive. Har har. I had to insert a little modern-day sarcasm. So sue me. In all seriousness this is a fine scene. The various trees make a good backdrop to the beach, and the barrels with young apple trees are a great idea. I like the progression from water to sand to grass - it's too compressed to be realistic but it accomodates the scene well without requiring a huge base. The raft is nice and it's good to see you reusing those highly recognizable natives of yours. You've really taken off with this apple story - which is unique and not something I ever would've imagined in the Pirates forum until now. Good work. I approve.
  20. Excellent character intro. The wedding scene is a great way to start things off and you have a nice collection of characters (and hats!) present. I commented on the tower elsewhere but it looks good against that backdrop with the appearance of the rising/setting sun and cloud shadows. Welcome aboard!
  21. From an artistic and creative viewpoint this is a really good build, despite being so violent and graphic! The trees and other natural features are nice and the posing is really good. I like the edited effect, but I also think it may be too much - it's hard to pick out some of the details although in fairness they're easily visible in the unedited pics. The richness of the story is good - sometimes amateur writing is a bit much but this fits the scene perfectly. It's also a nice counter to the thought that Oleanders are the ones always lusting after native blood! Good work.
  22. This is a really nice scene - the subject matter is good, if not somewhat sad, and the setup and photography are wonderful. The arrangement is artistic although that's to be expected from something based on a painting. The sun and haze effects are both really cool although the folds in the cloth are distracting. The white plates for foam are simple but effective. Overall this is a unique and well-done creation. Good work.
  23. Captain Braunsfeld, this just might be my favorite of all the land-based creations you've ever built. This house is just beautiful in those colors and the basic design is simply splendid. The roof looks very realistic with the variety of colors and the arched gold-lattice windows are lovely. The half-fence pieces are nice features and the smoothness overall is great. Your minifigs look nice too, especially since the colors all match. I'm guessing there's no interior since you didn't show one but it's still a fine build regardless. Good work!
  24. Well... if you want official sets, the old Black Seas Barracuda has been modded into a redcoat ship by lots of people. I suppose you could do something similar for the blues but it might require swapping out some of the "wrong" colors. The 10210 IFS is ridiculously priced by now - I paid twice what it sold for to get mine and they're much higher now. If you don't have the older ships maybe you could combine the later models into something bigger.
  25. This is a fantastic scene. It fits the design of the raised baseplate perfectly - even better than the official sets if I dare say so. I like the towering presence of the home, the tan and brown colorscheme, the decorated lookout post, the different vegetation and the bustling docks. The longboat looks smoother than the example it's based on. The iron statue, cannon and skeletal remains are reminders that these folks are serious. Overall this shows a lot of activity and good details. Keep it up.
