  1. The Character Development Skills Tree / Achievement System is based heavily on the University of Petraea Doctorate of Historica program in Guilds of Historica and its main intention will be to improve BoBS builders' skills by requiring them to demonstrate mastery of many different types of building skills, but it will be a voluntary program. Members not participating in gameplay will earn titles; members participating in gameplay will reap other benefits related to the game as well as the titles, just as Bregir mentioned. At least that's what's been planned so far. Give it a month or so. The best cure for impatience is building.
  2. That's a fine little scene with a classic look to it. The shelter is nice and looks snappy with that red roof. The rest of the layout is good too - except for the water above the level of the sand, which might cause a few wet feet. I really like the minifig selection: besides just a few normal soldiers, the PotC torso looks spectacular and I see you're not afraid to use a few blues as well. I like the idea, because it's a great way to use some good minifigs that otherwise would be left out. Oh, and wigs are always nice too! Good work. P.S. Corsets? What's that? Never heard of 'em. It's just a tight-fitting suit, that's all.
  3. I've been wondering... is this based on any specific time period? The horizontal mold in particular has piqued my curiosity.
  4. All these comments, but no mention of the predecessor... This is a good way of rebuilding. It's obvious what it's based on, and looks like a true MOC rather than the majorly MODed look of the old design. I'm not a big fan of purple but it looks nice enough as an accent color. You have some fine details and a good-looking crew as well. Nice work.
  5. "This is either madness of brilliant." "It's amazing how often those two traits coincide." Neat way of showing them reclaiming their vessel. Your underwater scene looks good, and I like the way you have the White Skull anchored to the side. All in all a good scene and story to match.
  6. This is a unique entry to the challenge. The statue has kind of an abstract or caricature look to it, similar to Easter Island as stated above. I wouldn't call it "shapely" with the angular hips and waist, and those massive column legs, but it has a nice primitive look to it. The base its sitting on looks fantastic - old, weathered, crumbling away as nature reclaims it. Good work. I like your approach to story-telling because it's based on a few familiar characters and is an engaging dialogue. This particular story is a bit much for my taste though. Well, several of Peacock's total comments have been for that matter. But I'm not easily offended, and I don't think you've really broken any rules per se so it isn't my place to be a censor. I may not like certain content but I'm generally supportive of users' ability to post anything that doesn't break site guidelines on the basis of free speech, especially considering the movement among American youth to silence any viewpoint deemed disagreeable, which is an outright attack on free speech. So... I don't like this story, but I'll defend your ability to be creative within reason.
  7. This has been answered well enough, but should it remain as a single topic or be merged into the Introduction and Starting Thread? If it stays by itself it may pave the way for more such singular questions, which could clutter things up a bit.
  8. "Hmmm. Now... where have I seen this before? Oh-h-h, I remember! This is just the way - " Uh, oops. I went a little too far with that quote. Lovely plantation! (Or what you've built of it anyway...) The ground looks pretty good, especially the rounded front corners, and I like that you've varied the terrain a little rather than just covering a 32x32 baseplate with plants, which would be lazy too easy. The fence in the back is nice, although someone needs to nail that loose board up pronto. Overall it's a very nice scene, and apparently they live by the motto "Be prepared!" Ah yes, the plants. That boll technique is the focus of my quote, but it looks great regardless of who came up with the idea. The plants' stems look pretty good, although... Uh-oh. First I picked on Garmadon's plantation (sorry, Garm! ) and now I'm doing it to you. Hey, I'm a farmer. I can't help it! The stems would look better, ie more accurate, if they were tan instead of green, because the plants are typically drying up by harvesttime. And the flower head at the base of each boll would also look better in tan - if only Lego offered them in that color. The plants would also look better if each one consisted of about 3 flower stems stacked together, but then they'd be waaay too tall for the minifigs, so this is a happy compromise. But none of this is really a big deal though - we all understand the limitations of working with those parts, and it comes across well as shown. I like it. You've also done a good job with the minifigs and the horse cart, but man, they've got a long way to go to finish that field! Hard, hot, dirty, itchy, sweaty work. Perhaps it will go quicker if they all sing "I've got a lovely bunch of cotton bolls, toodly-doo..." If I were the photographer, I'd tell that one fella "Don't turn your back on me!" And then I'd roar... Well, that's enough. But I have "a marvelous surprise for you!" I approve.
  9. During this time of exploration and colonization, this is just what the Corrington empire needs - more boats (and ships too, but that's a different matter). It looks pretty good; small and simple, nicely arranged, and some of that good ol' Corry red! I like the stands and the tiled inside of the brown boat and the other little details are fine as well. The story is pretty slim but the additional post helps that quite a bit. Overall this is a very welcome addition to the colony. Edit: Vedauwoo, the distinction between "Factory" and "Artisan" can be pretty blurry. This question keeps coming up; the rulers would rather you decide for yourself, based on your specific situation. This boatyard would be more Artisan than Factory to my eyes, but your shipyard could easily be either (and technically both, depending on the circumstances).
  10. Yes, of course. I view the king piece as an admiral, especially since he's wearing the admiral's/governor's suit! But I still think the shako is a strange choice of hat for him - shakos are for the soldiers, while a good decorated bicorne would've been really nice for him. And of all the nice printed blue torsos available for the queen piece, the best they could do was something red from a few years back? Seriously?
  11. Sure, sure, any ship would obviously use prefabs. I'm just saying that I can't hardly envision a sailing ship being produced as an Ideas set. Maybe I'm being pessimistic, but this last round of Pirates seemed like a turn for the worst for the theme (short lived, few sets) and I question how much demand exists for something like this. But I could be wrong, and I hope I am. This would definitely make a good Ideas set, and it has educational value. What's not to like?
  12. Yes, you'll be awarded 3 DBs for this at the end of the month when the MCRA and freebuild results are calculated. And yes, it should generate income to be awarded at the end of March.
  13. I would buy this in a heartbeat. It's a good solid set with a beautiful colorscheme, and lots of useful pieces for MOCing. I'm only vaguely familiar with it, but I thought (correctly, it seems) I remembered it as the vessel Darwin sailed on, so it could be a good historic set. As noted above, dropping the brickbuilt sails would drastically lower the piece count. But I fear this type of set stands no chance, unless the powers that be realize their grave error in not giving us a vessel for the latest Soldiers and do produce something like this. I just have a hard time imagining prefab ship hulls ever making their way into an Ideas set for some reason.
  14. Welcome to Eurobricks, Fuzzy MacFuzz, and also welcome to BoBS and Corrington! Your intro sounds great and would truly make some excellent building material. After the suspense of the old faction poll I have to ask: "Oleon, Oleon, wherefore art thou, Oleon?"
  15. Excellent review, Kai! But I vote "Average" for the set. It does make a great parts pack though. A couple of lingering questions: why did TLG reuse old torsos for the kings and queens (except the soldier king)? For a new set it seems silly, especially when all the other players are new. Perhaps they were trying to clear old inventory. Also, why a shako for the king? That's an odd choice in my opinion. And why no hats at all (tricorn or shako) for the soldier pawns? I like some hairpieces too but this just seems lazy. The two carrying food items look weirdly out of place too. Anyway, nice parts pack. If I want to play Lego chess I think I'll make my own, and do it properly.
  16. Wouldn't true privateering be defined as an act of war? Otherwise wouldn't it just be plain ol' piracy? Or am I missing something?
  17. Incredible creation, Gideon! It looks just about perfect. The technique you used on the mangroves is simply brilliant, and the rest of the scene looks really good as well. I'm curious - how many of the trunk pieces and big leaf pieces went into this? And where did the trunk pieces come from? (ie, set or part number) Excellent work, and once again the crest is flying proudly!
  18. I've learned more than I cared to know by reading all this but it's been interesting. Regarding the captains' appearances: I'm guessing the peg leg is a nod to Long John Silver (even though he used a crutch) and the hook is obviously inspired by Captain Hook. And none of them are able-bodied seamen as a result.
  19. Well I just walked the plank. Actually it looks great. There's definitely some new stuff since the last time I looked. With an index this good no one has any excuse for not being able to find things. Phred, you've done a lot for this forum.
  20. Ohhhhhhhhhhhh... Now I understand why Phred built a ship, a fort, and a cartographer's office for Corrington, and then joined Oleon! YES! Now it makes perfect sense! Run for it, Phred! Run like the wind! Run like the law is after you! Run like... Actually, I believe the good Doctor has already diagnosed the problem^. Stop and take a breather, my friend. Ahem. Well this is an interesting build, and nicely done, but I'm not sure I like the idea of the forum moderator advocating the use of such... stuff. Okay, time to be serious. Very unique idea, Phred, and good job posing all those minifigs. The shrooms are cool - are they all standard Lego, or custom? Either way it adds some color to the jungle, which looks great apart from the dark grey (a rock layer, perhaps?). Interesting challenge entry. Keep it up.
  21. That's a really nice building. The palisade brick wall technique is as basic as it gets but it looks great, and the removable front and roof are really good. The rows of arched windows are nice despite the gaps at the top. This has a very smooth appearance overall. The casting process looks interesting. I'm guessing it takes a lot of those small ladles to cast one full barrel! Perhaps they're more efficient than it looks... The trans red bar at the anvil is just about the perfect Lego piece for forging. You have quite a bit going on in a relatively small place. But I have to ask... wouldn't proper pirates be more inclined to just steal the durn things from someone else? Casting cannons is hard, hot work! They need some music to work by... some easy listening... I suggest "Canon in Dee major." Good work.
  22. My first thought was "Armada Sentry!" You've modded it heavily, so I see no problem with it. It's small but looks great apart from the undecorated plates in the front. Interesting story, and your future plans sound good. Keep it up.
  23. Interesting story and characters. (Orbinson Crux? Hmm... ) The setting is nice and I like the tree and the terrain. Adventure surely awaits...
  24. Good plantation and interesting story. (Was the news about Queen Anetta in that infamous tabloid, the Historic Enquirer?) The islanders' hats just keep getting more interesting with each build. The build itself is nice although I've never liked the look of upturned palm leaves; they're growing against gravity unless the wind is blowing really hard. But the textures and other details are all very good. Keep it up.
  25. Nice cutter. The overall shape is good although taller slopes would improve the look of the tumblehome where it meets the bow and stern. The rigging is pretty good; as previously suggested another jib would be nice. I also think the mast could be moved forward just a little. But those are minor concerns, and overall this is a good vessel. I approve.
