Calling Volunteers! Oleon vs. Namere Build-Off
Captain Dee replied to Kolonialbeamter's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
We have 4 of 6 builds posted and it's the 27th... Was this extended? -
Lovely ballroom. It has the perfect look: tall decorated windows, a balcony, a fancy floor etc. I like that color scheme and the base is neat. You have a good group of minifigs, even if Alberto and his wife are dressed a few centuries ahead of their time. I see KB had a good dance partner, and he's found his yellow cup again! It appears someone stole Hook's outfit. I'm surprised Captain Cookie's band didn't provide the music. And apparently the queen needed a break from dancing just when the photographer showed up... I wonder if Gangwolf knows any more of those A, B, B, A chords: She's My Kind of Pirate, or Lay All Your Loot on Me, or Monkey Monkey Monkey, or You Owe Me Rum, or Waterloot... Good build.

Pirates of Brickworld Chicago 2016 (image heavy)
Captain Dee replied to Capn Frank's topic in Pirate MOCs
Thanks for the pics Phred. There is some good stuff here. Man, I am like totally digging the pirate ship hat! But it looks a little awkward to wear... The micro scene is cool too but the big layouts are really impressive. Those forts look great as well. Good work everyone. -
[OL-MRCA] The Resurrection finds a lost Soul
Captain Dee replied to Capn Frank's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Yee-ha!! I made it to Brickworld after all!! Well, sorta... Someone should inform Captain Doofus the proper way of handling a sextant. And typically, it seems he's more interested in the treasure chest than actually navigating. I'm guessing he ran them aground, or else collided with another ship or three. Seriously, the vessel is nice, and that fleet is really impressive. Too bad we can't see a little more of it. Who all provided ships for the display? Looks like you had a good time. -
Knights in White sat in...
Captain Dee replied to Captain Braunsfeld's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
Neat house. The modular design is great and those are some interesting minifigs. The roof design is nice, but the thought of red I cannot defend: it would look a lot better if you replaced it with some of the various Moody Blues. By the way, what are those knights wearing? Cotton? Linen? Silk? I'm guessing they haven't seen much beauty through those eye slits. Keep it up. -
Corrington vs. Carno - Dashing Out
Captain Dee replied to Garmadon's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Ahh... that makes perfect sense. Yeah, a decent horse-drawn carriage takes space! If it makes you feel any better, I didn't quite have enough room either. I would've preferred a few more studs each way, as I didn't have nearly enough space for all the minifigs I really wanted to use. But I suppose that's all part of the challenge. -
[COR vs CAR III] "In her Majesty's Diplomatic Service"
Captain Dee replied to Bregir's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Nice courtroom. That curved window section looks very stately (especially from the inside) and the decorated pillars look nice. The minifigs are really good, and the Scary Knight CMF fits the carnal carnival Carnie court scene surprisingly well. The proceedings sound just about perfect, and I'm happy to hear you won the case... -
[COR vs CAR I] "Protecting her Majesty's Honour"
Captain Dee replied to Puvel's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Lovely tower. It has a nice classic look with the yellow accents. The tree and the rest of the landscape look nice as well. Those minifigs look great, particularly the captain in that hat/hairpiece. It matches his flamboyant character well, and the story is a nice read. Good work (and congrats on winning... ) -
[Cor vs Car] A Matter Of The Heart
Captain Dee replied to Jacob Nion's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Beautiful courtroom. The mininal use of color turned out really well and the big window, wall techniques and statue decorations all look great. It looks very much like a historic courtroom and the nice collection of minifigs (and their innovative seated poses) adds much to the scene. But the proceedings, while humorous to some, sounds just like a bunch of Carnie propaganda to me!! Excellent build -
Corrington vs. Carno - Dashing Out
Captain Dee replied to Garmadon's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Very nice action scene for the build-off. Those pine trees look nice and add much depth to the whole scene - perhaps you could show how you built them? But I must confess to being puzzled by the two trunks on the right, unless the one is supposed to be dead or something. The road technique looks good and the posing of the minifigs is great. It's a nice continuation of the first part, although the king's solitary travel seems really risky and really dangerous, as shown here. Apparently he just likes living on the edge. Overall a fine project. -
[COR VS CAR] A Brilliant Idea! But...
Captain Dee replied to Maxim I's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Very nice build-off entry. I like those muted earth colors with the red, blue and gold accents. The recessed shields look great and the floor mosaic is lovely. Those minifigs are nice as well. The king is unique in that torso and the guards are a creative departure from what we typically see in this forum. Your version of Queen Annetta is very faithful to the original. I thought about using that dress for mine but with the original dark red arms (due to bad memories of cracked arm sockets from my childhood collection I generally don't swap arms) but since I was including several ladies I went the easy way with the CMF Queen instead. Your story is interesting too - it seems this king is quite the character to just barge in with those demands, but a quick-witted character at that. Good work.- 9 replies

[COR - May FB2] Penal Quarry and Brickworks
Captain Dee replied to Ayrlego's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
This quarry is fantastic. The heavy use of tan is a welcome break from grey, and the somewhat geometric detail of the face of the deep quarry pit is very realistic for dimensional stone. I also like your approach for surface vegetation although that one spindly tree does look a bit lonely. Other than that, this is a great design. The shade in the center would surely offer a welcome respite from the midday sun and the typical lack of wind in the pit. Those prison workers will have their work cut out for them! Good work. -
Fantastic factory! That exterior is massive and all those windows make it look really impressive. The landscaping is nice as well. But of course the interior is the best part with all those different processes represented so well. It certainly looks appropriate for the time period in question, and your way of showing the cotton in all its various forms is extraordinary. I'm also impressed by that collection of so many unique minifigs which always adds a lot to a build. Excellent work!

[ESL - FB1 - class 5+] Pride of Elysabethtown
Captain Dee replied to Legostone's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Beautiful ship. The overall form is really nice and the stern especially looks great. White over brown has never appealed to me, but it looks nice here with the black, tan, and red accents. The rigging is pretty good even without sails. The row of gunports seems pretty low, but the explanation seems reasonable enough. Overall she's a fine vessel. Good work. -

Winners Annouced! Corrington vs. Carno Build-off
Captain Dee replied to Kai NRG's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Good work everyone and thanks to all who took the time to vote. Jacob's was definitely worthy of the individual honor. And I strongly suspect Her Majesty Annetta will have something to say when she hears the news. -
[COR vs CAR II] "Her Majesty's Melodious Musings"
Captain Dee replied to Captain Dee's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
For your viewing enjoyment, I've added about 10 more pics to the story. Posing all those scenes was a lot of fun, which hasn't always been the case with my builds. Blackdeathgr - "Exquisite" might be overly generous but I'm glad you like it. I enjoyed building it and enjoyed writing it just as much. I got a good laugh on both counts which is the most important thing. I wanted a mix of drama, action, and humor, rather than just trying to be funny. Garmadon - Thanks. The story grew considerably; I added parts on the fly as the idea evolved. As mentioned elsewhere, the piano came from the Friend's Grand Hotel and is only lightly modified for this build. I tried to imagine a way to make it substantially better/different without losing the minifig scaling and couldn't do much better; it's just about perfect in its original form. I replaced the black telescope legs with the modified gold bricks and put the round gold brick in the center to attach it to the turntable; the other changes are cosmetic. One thing that could be improved is the bottom plate layer - it would look better in black rather than grey, but I didn't bother. I should've built a stool or bench for the queen to sit on but didn't have my curved red slopes handy to show her sitting minus the big dress piece. The chandelier is indeed heavy (and perhaps a bit gaudy...) but it attaches really sturdy with those chains. Without a true wall structure to support it, the columns of white bricks on the corners pull in under the weight, especially if I move the build around much, so I had to straighten the outer top corners often when setting up for photos. Interestingly, it doesn't sway much at all when moved, perhaps due to the chains being pulled back at such a sharp angle. It was a struggle to get it to hang straight but in the end I was pleasantly surprised. Now I need to build one that looks a little better! I believe you're right about the colors of those hanging baskets. I should've just used red and white flowers which would be a lot easier on the eye than that riot of colors. Good idea and I'll have to remember that for next time... Captain Braunsfeld - I'm always looking for clever ways to include existing words and phrases. (And, thanks to you, alliteration as well! ) Shakespeare and Edgar Allen Poe should be obvious. I understand the "Secret" is most well-known here in North America, so I had no idea how well an international audience would get that. At least someone understands it's good to be Victorious! But there were actually 2 referrences to that: the first appears early in the story. *Sniff sniff* Oh, and apparently bumping posts isn't funny here on EB, even as part of a story... If you didn't check the music links, I urge you to go back and listen - at least to the second and third ones. Those violins are amazing and Jarrod Radnich's virtuoso piano performance of the PotC theme is simply phenomenal. Thanks for the comments everyone. -

With regards to that King's Port Enquirer Examiner Weekly Advertiser - considering the outrageous rumors it started about her taste for bananas, Her Majesty Annetta Queen of Corrington doesn't give a brick seperator when or even if it's published again...

Lovely tavern Cap'n. The interior looks great, and the white-grey-brown looks fine on the exterior. And gold... (Better hope Sir Dee doesn't arrive or he might take the window lattices with him when he leaves! ) I like the chandelier and the roasting pig is a good feature. I always like balconies and this one looks fine. The fight looks pretty normal; I see a few heads didn't even bother to turn. And the shark on the wall is pretty much mandatory for a pirate tavern, no? Arrr!! But the biggest trouble I see is that bluest-of-blues, Kolonialbeamter, drinking from a red mug! Did someone steal his yellow one?!?! Good work.

Voting Thread - Corrington vs. Carno Build-off
Captain Dee replied to Kai NRG's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
It's good to finally see some comments here, and also good to see a close race and not another landslide... And I finally got the rest of my story posted about a day behind. Good work from everyone. Close competition makes for a far more interesting challenge. Builds and stories are good. Maxim, I wouldn't fret the individual vote. Yours looks great, especially the mosaic - and being a remake of Ska's build from the sign-up topic is really neat. Your version of Her Majesty looks perfect too; since I was including several ladies in mine I wanted her to look sufficiently different, and I have several CMF Queens... Jacob's courtroom is fantastic and makes excellent use of techniques, muted colors, and minifigs. And that story is impressive. Garmadon's pine trees are nice, and the action scene and minifigs look great... but I must confess to being puzzled as to why the king is travelling alone... But still a fine build. Bregir's courtroom looks good and those minifigs look just like a bunch of crass Carnians. I'm impressed that this was done with a greatly reduced collection. Puvel's tower is beautiful and that tree is neat. Those minifigs look great; Hook's hat is perfect for Captain Whoknowsnothing. Overall a nice arrangement. And as for that Captain Dee fellow, someone should kindly tell him that he has a lot to learn... And while she anxiously awaits the verdict, Her Majesty Queen Annetta has busied herself with reading that literary masterpiece, The Art of War and Peace in Our Time. Good work everyone!! Edit: misspelled a name... -
[COR vs CAR II] "Her Majesty's Melodious Musings"
Captain Dee replied to Captain Dee's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Thanks for the comments. TitusV - This is based on this build (as Maxim pointed out) but nothing was carried overly unchanged; it's mostly all new. I'll edit a full explanation into the first post later. soccerkid6 - Words of praise from a talented builder, though I must say it's built almost entirely studs-up. It's still not quite as royal as I'd like, thanks to that 20x20 size limit. But I'm happy with how it turned out. Kai NRG - Well, the story is finally done. And I think any palace interior should have lots of rich-looking details! But I almost forgot the curtains, and adding them was difficult, but worth it in the end. Maxim - Good eye. I wanted this to look as similar as possible to the original, but besides a few details it's all-new, and nothing was unchanged. Captain Braunsfeld - Of course I am not obsessed with the color of gold. As far as "Calamity" is concerned there's a Calamity Drone (with appropriate head and hands of course) on the balcony. I could've filled the entire scene with them. Judging from the looks of this MOC, I think the great gold rush already happened! Good eye on Beethoven's name. I'm not sure how I goofed that. But... Pachelbel's was also missing the "h" so apparently that key wasn't working when I typed those names! Thanks again folks! -
