[MOC] [WIP] The Command of the AT-AT
anothergol replied to LiLmeFromDaFuture's topic in LEGO Star Wars
yeah but is that blueprint accurate? They don't look silly-thin here, but of course it's hard to say, it's a bit angled. Also, they never appear ultrathin in 3D models in games - where they would have no reason to have to be thicker. I don't think that doubling the joints is really required btw, at least not for some poses. Those are very (too IMHO) strong afterall, and they only have to hold roughly 1/4 of the weight each. -

Thicker. I don't know if the "real" legs are really THAT thin, but even if they are, the thin ones look way too weird. Sometimes you've got to move away from movie props that are made.. for a few shots in a movie, and aren't necessarily well thought. I don't know where those schematics come from, but I've never seen such thin legs in 3D models or in the movie - could be an illusion of course, as we never see an AT-AT from the front, but in any case, thin looks too weird. Do you need the inv radar btw? I would replace it by a brick-built "screw" detail - unless it's a printed inv radar that you'll be using. Also, are the toes designed to be a little angled downwards on a flat surface? -
you know what that means? Petition to get Lego to publish parts of the data format, so that new parts can be added by third parties.

Looking good. So the top of the arch, with the weight on it, is only holding to the 2 semi-arch parts by 1 stud? You could maybe run axles through the semi-arches, as afterall those 2 1x1 plates will be covered. -
yeah, basically, http://www.bricklink...?p=ChromeBricks I think you can ask them to chrome specific parts. I got back to Lego after Lego stopped making real(?) chromed parts. I can understand why, after getting 2 used "chrome silver" parts, one being all shiny & cool, the other having lost half of its coating. Still, Lego should have given up, not replaced them by those ugly supposedly metallic colors that more look like striped icecream.

Thanks everyone I got good feedback for it on MOCPages, I wasn't really expecting it because to me the only value is in its action feature (pull-back motor closing cockpit+light) which I still have to film, while the smooth look was more guided by the available parts than "designed". Yeah, could be a good or a bad thing, bad if I consider that these great mechs went unnoticed: https://ideas.lego.com/projects/90628 https://ideas.lego.com/projects/116968 https://ideas.lego.com/projects/77030 Yeah it's the new model replacing the official 6882, after 30 years. I was going nowhere with a MOC, so I looked around and saw that model I own for 30 years now & decided to put it on legs. I wanted the same "walking" feature as the original, + raising/lowering & rotating action. Unfortunately the end result, because Technic, is too wobbly to work as a "toy".

I've built many MOCs (all sci-fi related) this year, but didn't have the right camera & photo setup yet at that time. When I finally did, I had over a dozen of them to photograph and it takes time, but finally I've gathered them all in Flickr. Some of them already showed in threads under crappy pictures, the others are new. https://www.flickr.com/photos/137434519@N08/albums (19 MOCs, mechs & spaceships) I'm thinking of adding one of them to Lego Ideas (it's never pointless, it's also a good place to be seen), I'm hesitating between these 2 first ones. This first one might be ideal, as it's only a few hundred parts.

those colored axles, they could be predicting either a good or a bad future: -good if Lego is now starting to color those things, and who knows, they may be re-introducing custom-colored pins as well, like the now overexpensive black pin/axle -they really ARE color-coding them for good, and that means we'll have to start stocking up good old sober axles now :(
-
I was talking about things like those 1x6 tiles in the middle of the Aston Martin's hood, unless those are on ball joints inside maybe? I'm seeing things that I don't think Lego would do in official sets (but I could be wrong, as they now put tiles in clips too), but as I wrote, it doesn't matter when the end result looks this good.

I'm generally not a fan of "unproper builds", but when they look perfect like this (especially the last 4), I don't mind
-
weird, have you tagged your pictures? I'm only on flickr since recently, so I may just have missed them. But a search doesn't find them. I was only suggesting posting pics in "Lego Sci-fi", "Lego" and "Lego builders".

Well I was actually thinking of those 2 factors too, I know I'd rather trust a machine-timed activation (that would also allow for smoothing, for more natural motion), than myself, -especially- when there's a risk of going wrong. I've only played with the first Mindstorms incarnation (bought an EV3 recently but haven't unboxed it yet), and it seemed accurate. A light detector would even ensure that it stops when it gets close to the base. Even cost-wise, it's true that Mindstorms is overexpensive, but so is Power Functions IMHO, when you add things up. The only big downside is that both aren't even compatible, and Mindstorms doesn't seem to have lights :( (which is a sin, because it would have been perfect for lights gently dimming up)

the motorization of the imperial shuttle is amazing btw Are you manually selecting each pass? Mindstorms would do wonders here.
-
I haven't seen your set on flickr btw, that would be a good place to make it more known (in the lego & lego sci fi groups)

But is there really sideways movement? (btw a bracket like 11215 might have worked there, it looks like the foot's front is in the same stud direction) and yet you motorized the head & guns :)

I think this is the AT-ST that pleases me the most visually so far, even though I haven't checked how accurate things are, it all seems to work together. I thought non-bended legs would only allow for a boring look, but the pose works for me too. Funny how pretty different takes on the same model (LilmeFromDaFuture, La Chupacabra, Cavegod & all) all produce good results. Pretty impressive that it works. Indeed, they don't even need to be attached. However I'm surprised that they haven't been crushed yet, especially since you have motors & all up there. I know there are 16 arch parts, but that must still be quite some weight on each. Why did you use bars with hoses btw, pins weren't ok? (where did you find bars 2L? Or did you mean a 61184?)
-
Pretty impressive walking. I was expecting one like JK Brickworks's micro version, but you have a lot more going on in yours.

ah, so it's yours! do you have a thread about it somewhere btw? I'd like to know how you managed to make those feet stand Would be worth having a generic thread about AT-AT MOCing btw, as there are at least 2 people here actively working on a full-scale one. I know I'd never start one of my own, but since Cavegod's version I want to have one, ideally one that gathers the best of everyone's MOC. -

for inspiration, this new one is one of the best I've seen https://www.flickr.c...8/in/pool-lego/ I don't know how accurate it is, but it looks damn good. Especially the use of old gray for leakings on the body, and the painted flags on the leg joints. Feet joints look great as well, although I have no idea how they're attached, they might as well be glued. Oh wait he even motorized the head (& guns!), there are video's in his album. -
ah indeed it's in grey that I want them :( (but right now one still has to buy that overpriced Portal set)
-
pretty good, but why have you replaced the single-piece windscreen? You still have it in your previous pictures, it looks better with the slight curve IMHO. edit: ah ok, you went from 6 to 8 studs, makes sense. Probably the best it can be, then.
-
where? I haven't spotted any interesting new part (aside from prints) in those :(
-
After too many weeks (mainly waiting for the parts - Belgian post had been on strike) & things going wrong, I'm now finished with it. I wish the interior of the wings was black, but maybe one day those parts will exist in black. https://www.flickr.c...th/22493722034/

Well I suppose it's all well partitioned for fast rendering, however I'm pretty sure that the small & thin Lego labels on every stud that LDD2PovRay does don't help optimizing a searching tree(?) Ah yeah, I agree about transparent pieces, it's even worse with POVray. For stills I prefer to render a 2x larger version than to bump up the antialiasing passes btw, I find a scaling down with sharpening looking kinda nicer. (I also generally bump up the contrast a lot - I'm not saying BlueRender should do this by default though, it's more the problem that Lego's light gray isn't light enough)
