Is your sort just for bag(s) 1? I started my 42009 today as well and my days building was to sort bag(s) 1, organized into bins according to my personal grouping technique. Now, ready to start building tomorrow! BTW: Anybody know the approximate parts count for bag 1 set, bag 2 set and bag 3 set? Bag 1 set looks like a big build, a 4 to 6 hour build for me. Andy D

Investment Value: Helicarrrier Vs. Ghostbusters Firehouse
Andy D replied to Bryboy747's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I really question the value of LEGO as an investment. If one is investing in LEGO to make money you need to buy many sets and be prepared to store for a few years. The resale is very tricky, some resellers are selling some older sets will remove the pieces and put pieces of lesser value in the box so the purchaser doesn't get what they paid for, then there's the rocks instead of LEGO and the most problematic is the purchaser who got the proper set and claims foul (rocks or wrong pieces) and the seller is left hanging. If you decide to resell LEGO, just be careful who you buy from and who you sell to. Just MHO, YMMV Andy D -
The 'Cost' of Owning Large Lego Collections
Andy D replied to DrJB's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Hidden costs! What hidden costs? I remodeled the bedroom with built-in cabinets and a building desk and custom shelving ($$$). Then there's lighting and storage. Nope, no hidden costs here! The only thing hidden are the sets and parts in storage not on display. Good luck hiding anything... Andy D -
42056 - Porsche Speculation
Andy D replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I may be a part of a minority here, but I prefer stickers over printed pieces for two (2) reasons... 1. It gives me the choice of plain or decorated. 2. I believe the no stickers increases the reusability of parts. As for this Porsche... The more I look at it, the more I am hopeing for the orange. As for RC or Power Functions, I really don't care, because the model will not be played with, like most of my LEGO it will be assembled, learn what I can from it, the off to the parts bins for MOCing. This set looks like it could have a number of interesting build techniques, for that reason I am really looking forward to it. Just MHO, YMMV Andy D -
Lego won't have enough Bricks for Everyone this Christmas
Andy D replied to kermit's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I did not notice a substantially lower supply in my local LEGO store before Christmas, and I seldom frequent TRU, Target or WalMart (so I don't know about them) I did go to the LEGO store January 1st for the new releases and the store seemed well stocked again. So.... No noticeable shortage here. Andy D -

OT -- I can't find Jar Jar ;) ;) Andy D -
I agree with Tachnirus, I think you may have missed something. I just had the normal small pieces left over in my 42039. I would suggest you look through your instructions for places where a 13M beam is used and see if you correctly placed the required beam. I've never had a beam left over from an A model. Good luck Andy D

Looks like ShaydDeGrai made it, claimed his age, and is still unbadged. Ok, any othe new "Older Than Dirt" (over 50 YO) members want to claim their badge? Thanks again to Fugazi for filling this thread and badgering us up! Andy D

Everyone I know knows I am a LEGO builder. In fact when people visit, even for the first time, the first thing they want to see is my LEGO. Most of my friends are 50-60+++ I am the second or third oldest member of EB (70), the oldest is over 80 and still building. Anyone who criticizes someone for LEGO just doesn't understand LEGO. LEGO may be first a toy, but for us older adults it is an art form. I look at my LEGO bricks as the ultimate, reuse able art supply. If someone buys clay, or paint, it is used once... LEGO is reused over and over and over. The most bang for the "buck" of any art medium I know. I guess I can't choose inexpensive hobbies, my othe hobby is GoPro. I even mix my hobbies! So YES I am "out" as an AFOL, proud of it and very, very happy with my hobby. Oh, yeah, I am also the founding member of the "Older Than Dirt" club here on EB just look at the members badges, if you see the "Old Timer's" badge you will know that they came out as a member of the over 50's group here on EB. I'm "Older Than Dirt" and proud of it! Keep on clicking those bricks together! (And be proud of it!) Andy D

42055 - Bucket Wheel Excavator
Andy D replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Yeah, but 1500 to 1800 of those pieces will be divided up between pins, axels (mainly 3l), and track links. Just MHO, YMMV... Let's wait and see how many real parts. Andy D -

Oh, I think Sariel will keep his hamsters perfectly safe. It looks like a hamster amusement park... Maybe that is what this is.. A hamster amusement park... Hamsterland! The wheel, like a Ferris wheel, The tracked chutes. Like a fun house or a hamster Tunnle of Love! Who knows what those hamsters are going to find! I really want to see Sariel's video. Considering the size, this looks like a 4-6 hour Sariel assembly. Jim's assembly time could be 8 - 10 hours plus considering all his great assembly photos. As for the size, close to 4,000 parts... My guess... 1,000 pins 500 axels 500 track pieces 200-300 gears So, that leaves maybe 2,000 beams and other Technic pieces. We shall see. Still a great parts pack for getting a new AFOL started into Technic, or a great addition to other Technic collectors inventory. Me, I just want to build it! Large sets usually have lots of learning potential, lots of useful assembly techniques, kind of like a 4,000 piece classroom! I guess I'm talking myself into this. When I first saw it, I thought... No way! Now I'm thinking classroom! Andy D -

I also think accumulation threads are fine, as long as the person creating the accumulation thread is the thread author. Andy D -
Just when I thought Jar Jar had been spared. I looked at the first photo... Hmmm.. No Jar Jar (maybe the hostility has ended) I looked at the second photo... Hmmmm... No Jar Jar (for sure the hostility has ended) I looked at the third photo... There it is... Poor Jar Jar! I guess we need to remember... If you take the fork lift up too high... You turn into Jar Jar! Nice build, Andy D

We all have this failure ^^^ at one time or another. ;) ;) But This is a great corner! Worth all your time and any extra parts you had to procure. Keep up the great MOCs (especially your modulars) Andy D

This is very nice! I really like the 16 wide modulars, your's reminds me of a 16 wide with a garage. I may have to build this someday, though I think I would turn the garage into an open air market. Thanks for sharing this, Andy D

I prefer to see a new thread for each new MOC. Even if it is a revision of a previous MOC, I feel significant revisions are a new MOC. I really do not like it when similar MOCs by different people are combined into one thread, it takes away from each MOC., and I do not feel it is appropriate when someone hijacks a MOC thread to insert their MOC. Just MHO, YMMV Andy D -

Been a long time since you've posted a Jar Jar ;) I think you left out... Various lengths Technic beams and lift-arms Various lengths of axels Various types of (lost of) Technic pins Various gears (whoops, you had gears) Just a start of Technic supplies Andy D

That's a great list! Having all those parts in quantity will surely help the MOCing process. I have at least 50k parts and I still find I am missing particular parts when I built. Lately I made a decision to just build with the colors I have, then if I like the MOC I may order proper colors if I want to use the MOC for something specific. Since building is the most fun for me and display space is at a premium I may just build, enjoy for a while, then back to the parts bins. I'm going to do this for both Technic and System MOCs. Lots of the parts you discuss are really good specialty parts, very useful! Just MHO, YMMV Andy D

Great start! I like it, lots of elements of buildings made smaller. I really think the Micropolis standard is a great idea for small builds. Been meaning to do some, but other ideas get in the way. Keep it up, Andy D
