42056 - Porsche Speculation
Andy D replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
How much negativity is there really? Are there a lot of people with one negative post? OR (as I suspect) just a few people with several negative posts each? I think the set looks fantastic! The features, great! Who cares about HoG steering, I'm not going to "play" with it anyway. I am looking forward to the complexity of the build (new or interesting techniques) and interesting mechanical functions. Lots of parts and techniques for me to re-use. Some folks keep calling this an "Ultimate" set, I believe this is a name given here by some posters, not TLG. Before I comment more about the set, I would like to see Jim and Sariel's reviews... That will tell more of the story than most of the "complaints" we have seen here. Just MHO, YMMV, Andy D -

Thanks... I usually start building my Halloween display late August or early September, so I am now just in the planning phase. I guess I'm always in the planning phase for Halloween and Christmas, even while building, gotta plan for next year. Andy D -
I could use all of those! Andy D

+1 more for Monster Fighters. I need more for my Halloween display. Maybe some Fantasy Castle could also help as well. I also have a soft spot for many of the Classic Space themes, though I probably would not collect them. Andy D

Wow! I really like your brick built background! I may "borrow" your idea for my Halloween scene this year. Couple of questions though: 1. How large is the background? 2. Did you use 1 by X or 2 by X bricks (or what)? Thanks, Andy D -

Yes, I recognized it as A transmission, but without comment from the poster, is it... The Porsche transmission? or Just some 4 speed transmission? There is now descriptor from the original poster. Thanks, Andy D -

Where do you get these discounts? Or see price drops. Especially on exclusives only sold by shop@home or in LEGO stores? Andy D -
So, is it Ninja Go or Nin Jago?
Andy D replied to Andy D's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
Thanks for the info. Andy D -
There was a discusion here some time ago on the subject of how to pronounce Ninjago. Some thought Ninja Go, others thought Nin Jago. Just this AM there was a Legoland CA commercial advertising a new Ninjago attraction and I think I heard the pronounciation Nin Jago, twice. Anyone else see this commerical? Did they say what I thought I heard? Andy D

You must be thinking of a different spelling, maybe something some men may need medication for. I looked on the Wikipedia page and it appears that Gilbert Erector sets were only made until 1962. But in 2000 a French company acquired the nam and continues the Erectir set in some form. Maybe since they were metal they were just too dangerous for kids. But like Sarah I much prefer LEGO, as they are much more versitile. With Technic you need pins, with Erecror you need screws and nuts to join the pieces. Sorry for the off topic... Andy D

My connection with LEGO started back in the early 1980's when we got some for my son, and then in the 1990's when my wife got me some for Christmas as a joke. But my interest in LEGO now actually started in 2008 with NXT, then more Technic, then Modular buildings and now back to Technic. I am a senior member of the Old Timers Club, so you do the math. I do not think LEGO building blocks were around when I was a Kid, I had Erector sets, for those who don't know what Erector sets are... Google. Erector is a metal construction toy, kind of like Technic. Andy D

The VW mini bus turned out great, it was fun watching. It looks like you are still getting votes fo your next project. Good luck deciding, it will be interesting no matter what you choose, especially if you choose the 8258 (I already voted, no sense stuffing e ballot box). Have fun with your next build! Andy D -
There is a really great thread over in General Discussion http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=26213 I have read this thread through several times, lots of good ideas. IHTH Andy D

In rereading nerdzforprez's original post... His point (I believe) is that the PPP on the 42056 is not out of line with other sets. I believe that the difficulty most people are having is the "shelf" price. Many of us are accustomed to paying $150 to maybe at the top, $200 and a set price of $300 is double that of many sets. I think the most expensive single set I bought last year was $150, but I bought 2 of it. So $300 for 1 set is about the same for me. But many people have a more strict budget, they may not buy 2 of a $150 set, so $300 is expensive and because they may want the set quite disappointing. Look at the Star Wars sets... How many people collect Star Wars, they probably wanted the Death Star, but it was just too costly for their LEGO budget. I think the 42056 is the "Death Star" of Technic (so to speak) and all who want it will not be able to get it. Just MHO, YMMV Andy D

Wow! The more of these that show up, the more impressed I am. I was thinking about a monster truck, but KamaIMYafi beat me to it with Grave Digger. This is a really fun thread, keep them coming. Andy D -
I have been thinking about the price... Usually I buy two of the $150 sets, so with the Porsche I will buy just one of a $300 set. Same money spent. Besides the cost and engineering of the plastic and model design, there are costs associated with that huge book (I am looking forward to the book). Someone has to pay for these items... Us! It is the cost of these large UCS type sets, we asked for it, now if we really meant it, if we really want it we must pay for it. Just MHO, YMMV Andy D

At $300 I am not totally sure yet. I am leaning towards buying, but I don't think it would be my usual Technic set... Assemble and learn, display for awhile, disassemble and put parts into inventory. It may have to remain assembled a little longer. Things I like... Interesting building techniques (gearbox etc.) Lots of parts, including some new and exclusive. The book, it seems that there could be a lot of learning in there. With the Porsche, the BWE and the CLAAS tractor and others, I could wind up spending quite a bit on LEGO this year, almost enough to replace my aging computer. Oh, well it's only money, what else am I going to do with it? It's a good thing this comes out June 1st and the rest come out August. Not sure what my wife would say about the expense of the Porsche, BWE and CLAAS all at once. If this comes out June 1st, can we expect reviews from Jim and Sariel sometime soon? Hope so! Andy D -
I think part of it is "joke" but part of it are some very clever builds with imagination. We've seen HOG steering, some clever tractor trailer trucks and even a easily recognizable tank (very clever). I think there is a place for these builds, in Technic, not sure where, maybe a thread where anyone can add a nano or micro build. But don't just throw it out as "the joke is over". Just MHO, YMMV Andy D

No! Don't lock it! I find these micro or nano builds fun and full of whimsy. There is so much more that can be done. I may wish I had the imagination to come up with a nano build. Just MHO, YMMV Andy D -

What you are saying is that we should stop and smell he roses... Errr LEGO. I have to force myself to slow Down and really study the intentions of the designer. When I do I enjoy the build so much more. In that respect, Clive you are really teaching all of us something valuable. Thanks ever do much. Andy D
