  1. I think this is the best summary statement of all the new sets we have seen today. I agree with Blakbird, we really are entering into a new realm of Technic models. Prior to 2011, we hadn't even seen a model over 2000 pieces (strictly speaking Technic). Now, in only five years. we have seen TLG double the pieces available in big flagship sets. Now I know this is not the same thing as complexity, but we have seen some pretty fun, complex sets as well. We recently also just got a new pneumatics system. Now myself, as well as others, have been clamoring for a long time to see more adult-themed sets. Many would like to even see a whole new sub-genre of Technic dedicated to nothing more than adults. It seems to me, that at least to a degree, TLG is listening to our pleas. We cant expect too much change over night, but little by little, at least in my opinion, at least the ceiling of what is available to more adult minded Technic folks is being raised. Significantly. This set, and even more so, the BWE, are meant to test us as adult builders. TLG is giving us, to a degree, what we want (IMO). Not everyone, and not everything..... but what I see from this and the BWE is a good faith effort of TLG to give us better, and more adult-level Technic sets. Now I know the price of this new set is high. I get it. But I dunno..... I think it is weird that we hear everyone ask for all these things they want, bigger, badder, more realistic sets.... and then when they deliver (debatable) they complain of the price. Did TLG deliver? Sure that is debatable, but I think one would be hard pressed to argue that they are not at least trying. These advances, and if we are truly entering into a new realm of Technic models, like Blakbird mentioned, it is going to come as a cost. I don't think that we can sit here and complain about the price when, at least IMO TLG is making a good faith effort to fill the whims of more adult-theme sets. Along with the request for something more "adult" ---- a more "adult" price tag will come.
  2. Is it just me or are all the new sets breaking the internet today (this along with the excavator)? Although only on my phone, these couples threads are abnormally slow today. I have some thoughts that I will deserve until I get home I'm front of a proper computer. But I think it's safe to say, with as much traffic these sets are getting, they are widely popular.
  3. Hey ya'all....i think the op I'd just saying that TLG has retired the product. Of course there will still be some available other places. Sets are almost always still available somewhere for the right place and even if it is retired, out may remain on shelves even at Lego stores for awhile
  4. Do we have the price? With that slewing doing hopefully there will be a resurgence of large mobile and crawler cranes. Seems like there were many large crawler crane mocs in like around 2010, but not as many of late. Not really any I can recall from our most recent crane competition.
  5. Good input everyone. I can also see the need..... in addition, for things that are not really full MOCs, just presentation of ideas or concepts, I can also see the use for the accumulation threads. Those mentioned do alot of that; not necessarily full MOCs but sometimes just ideas, concepts, etc.....
  6. I think it is a wonderful build. But curious of the weight. How heavy is it? I see lots of system bricks on top of all the technic parts....... looks like it could be a heavy bloke...
  7. I think this is a wonderful project. Even if it doesn't completely materialize. I like a good project that is innovative and different. But.... . just watched the video... it looks like you are making some progress.
  8. Just a quick question that I thought would stimulate a little discussion. Although I could have started a poll, I did not because I did not want it to sway individual preferences on how to post either way. I simply am curious and wanted to hear others' opinions. I have seen some create one long thread where they post all their builds. Well-known examples may include ZBLJ or Efferman's posts. However, others post individual builds. Sariel, although he posts often, individually posts each one of his builds. Many others as well, in fact, I would say this is the most common method of posting. What are the pros and cons of the different methods of posting? What people's thoughts or feelings? I have posted most of my MOCs individually. As I near completion of another MOC and subsequent posting, I am just curious in what others think.
  9. Ditto..... I was thinking the same thing -- welcome to the forum. Looking forward to your submissions.
  10. Saturdays are great for building. Been building all day. Noticed another OCD (i.e. "mania" by the OP) trait when building. When looking into a large bin or something of Lego, and I have my sights set on a certain piece.... I HAVE to have that piece. Even if there are dozens that surround it..... if I have targeted it.... then I HAVE to have it. The project I am currently on uses approx. 500 connector axle pins....was never much into having them all oriented the same way. But after reading this post I have arranged ALL of them, all 500 or so, in the same direction...
  11. I, like others, enjoyed your presentation and concept of idea. I would also love to see this as an actual piece available from Lego. But.... like others, also think that it is best to just print the parts out yourself. Why it likely will never be produced is because we are still dealing with a child's toy. That is, IMO, the larger issue that everyone is alluding to. As long as TLG sees this as a child's toy they are not likely to pay much attention to our desires as adult builders. I don't think this is as off-putting as it sounds. I think we are making strides, as the adult community, in having TLG hear our voices. We are having near-3,000 piece flagship sets new......nearly 1,000pieces more than 7-8 years ago. Wonderful sets, with although there is still so much more to go in terms of complexity, personally, I think we have at least seen gains. Perhaps one day TLG will see the potential of the adult market, and then I see requests like yours a viable option foe TLG. But until they make that switch, I don't see it happening. If they did, do they have the infrastructure to deal with all the new submissions that people would undoubtedly place? We have members on this site who for years have been making similar pieces. The adult community would tsunami TLG with submissions........
  12. Great video. I have seen XL motors as well as M motors taken apart. But I think this is the first time I have seen a RC buggy motor taken apart. As for the post above..... I am not sure a 3D printed part would be easy to obtain. The measurements would have to be exact. Without the original blueprints... .this may be difficult.
  13. Yea....not likely to happen. I think even if it were possible for Lego to create elements that could lead to a flying contraption we might never see them. Too much of a safety hazard. Probably the same reasons we may never see something as powerful as the rc buggy motor again. Too much liability
  14. I am not sure I would buy anything but that is only because I am too involved in my own stuff. I think the asking price is more than reasonable and am sure there are many who would love the files. Your creations are top notch
  15. I only asked this question because if you are running an LPE or something off of compressed air.... just use a tank. I made a home made tank years ago and just carried it around with me. My LPE only ran for a minute or so..... but for my LPE this worked fine. Easy enough to build... soda bottles and the nipples taken from bicycle tubes...... Another option would be metal air tanks. They can hold much more pressure and if you have a regulator that can release the appropriate pressure to Lego then using a metal air tank you could actually have quite a decent run time
  16. Where exactly is the instability? In the boom (does it bend?) or because the actuators can't hold the boom firm enough? If the weakness is in the boom itself, one could try to add a Y-guy arrangement. Such as this: Yes, the boom should should hold itself without bending, like a real crane, but because we are working with ABS and not steel special adjustments have to be made. Doing something like this would make a four stage boom possible.
  17. I'm kinda confused...are u just looking for pressurized air (air tank with compressed air) or also something that not only hold the compressed air but continuously compresses it as well (I.e. Has a motor)? The former would be much smaller and lighter than the latter...
  18. no one knows exactly when it will go. But history suggests that it may be soon. You can always get it on the secondary market, but prices rise considerably. Your post suggests you are strapped for money, so perhaps best to go with the Volvo first and the MB Arocs later..... simply because one will vanish quicker than the other.....
  19. Yea.... i think there is more than meets the eye to your video @tripletschiee. I have nowhere the experience or collection as Blakbird, but I do have many pieces from when I was a kid (no electronic stuff) and the plastic is all in good condition. I am NOT young I have elements clear back from the eighties. I also bought the Super Street Sensation (second-hand) -- and I haven't seen any of the problems like in your video....
  20. that is funny.... years ago I worked on a formula to try and estimate part count just from pieces. I stopped the project because lack of an N size and the remarkable variability in the relationship. One thing I learned from the project that there are different formulas for system bricks versus pure Technic. Anyways..... perhaps I shold rework on it and try to finish it. Just for kicks I plugged in 5000 grams in the system formula and got an estimation of 5231 bricks. Pretty close to the actual number!
  21. Hmmm..... honestly.... to criticize this for being too wide I think that it is like criticizing the remark for comparing two pictures at a slightly different angles (which would skew your view of wideness). The differences are so slight no meaningful information can be gathered. Perhaps it is too wide.... but you would need better comparisons to make that determination......
  22. Wow..... I hadn't looked at this thread for a while. Looks like Blakbird added instructions. Sweet. I love that we can collaborate and pass the original builds of some people into the hands of others. Great job everyone.....
  23. Okay..... I am jumping on the band wagon. Skeptic at first, watched the video and converted. This is really really wonderful......
  24. Hey everyone, quick question......My field has very little to do with anything in the technical sciences, that is perhaps why I love building with Technic so much... it gets me out of my realm of experience. But real quick, I have been interested in several older parts for a while, such as the RC buggy motor, micromotor, motors for the 9v system, and others. I was in my dark ages during these times so I have none of these, but I have no problem buying some --- even if they are costly. I just think that it would be fun to try some builds with such parts. However, my question is regarding part degradation over time. Is this something that I should be concerned about. I mean, some of these parts are nearing 10-15 years old. I understand aging brick..... but electrical components are a little more finicky. I know many still use them with success, so I am not really looking for answers such as "I still use them with no problem" - more like someone with in-depth knowledge of how such materials behavior through time or stand up to time. Again, it is not as though I previously bought them and have gotten use out of them for years. I would be barely acquire them, so unless I can expect a long life, as fun as it sounds to get them perhaps I should pass. Anyone with some in depth knowledge or experience on the matter?
