Merchant's Colonial Trading Company - General Discussion

Doh! I see from the chart in the first post it's 50db a month. I should really learn to read. -
Merchant's Colonial Trading Company - General Discussion
Capt Wolf replied to Kai NRG's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
I'll put in 10db. Is there a form I need to fill out, or do you take care of that? I'll be licensing one small residence as soon as my bricklink order arrives this week. If I had it to do over, I'd license my mill in one of the MCTC settlements rather than Nova Terreli. I jumped in too quick with that one before I understood the implications. How much is our monthly charter fee? -
I love the shack -- the wall technique and the palm leaves for the roof! Minifigs are well posed, too.

Welcome to Eslandola Sir Iron (and Sir Iron). But I must dispute Garmadon; the Merchant's Colonial Trading Company (MCTC) is the best trade company in the land!- 780 replies

Neat little build! I love how you made the corn stalks. But I think those reapers with their scythes have mistaken it for a sugar cane field!

Clever way to make the staircase! And I second the kudos for the cobblestones. -
I think I mistakenly checked NPC Territory when I licensed my mill in Nova Terreli. How do I go about fixing that?

I've got a question about the property license form. What is an NPC Territory?

Great idea! I was not expecting Vikings to show up in BoBS, but I like it. And I love how you show the buried ship. Well done all around!

[ESL-FB] Cotton Plantation in Nova Terreli
Capt Wolf replied to Elostirion's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Wow! That makes a big difference. I thought it would be hard to improve, but that has a real effect. Good suggestion! -
Thanks to all for the kind words on this. This ship came together surprisingly fast. I was particularly happy with being able to stage a minifig in the cargo hold. And I'm glad the effort I put into the dockside shed wasn't wasted. Thanks!

[ESL - FB] Grist Mill in Nova Terreli
Capt Wolf replied to Capt Wolf's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Thanks! And I agree, I'd like to have done a little more with the texture of the brown section, but I was limited by my available pieces. Thanks for the kind words. Making sure it could turn was an essential part of the puzzle for me. And you're right about the miller! I made some sacrifices to make this fit in 16 x 16. Looking at it now, I see I could have extended the ladder and not had too much overhang. The top part is more of a minifig illusion scale. I tried a properly sized door instead of the window and it made the whole thing look cartoonish. The whole thing should probably be 25-50% bigger to really fit a minifig. I think if I build a larger one in the future, I can address all of these problems. -
Phred, you're correct on the distinction between a sloop and a cutter. You have the sail plan exactly right. Lose the square sail and the extra jibs and she's a sloop. Or add the extra jibs to a sloop and you have a cutter.
-
Nicely done, and such an appropriate name for a cutter! I especially like the sails (and sail plan) and rigging. I also like the use of the red fence piece in the railing on the quarterdeck. And you've got a lot of detail items (anchor winch, tiller bar) that really add to the overall effect. I'd love to see it with a tiled deck.

As you approach Nova Terreli after the long voyage across the Terraversa Sea, one of the signature landmarks on the horizon is this grist mill. Sitting on a short bluff that overlooks the harbor, the blades of the windmill rotate slowly in the wind. While the slow, steady spin might be described as gentle or lazy, it is in fact a powerful force. Farmers bring their wheat and oats to the grist mill to be ground into flour. The millstones are housed in the upper part of the structure -- a post mill that can be rotated to face into the wind. Below is the roundhouse, built around the supporting trestles to create a covered storage area. I’d been playing around with ways to build the roundhouse for a post mill for awhile and finally hit upon a roof design that worked. Ultimately I want to build a version that has a viewable interior with millstones, but this will have to do for now if I’m to get the mill licensed this month.

When Philip reached the pier, he was pleased to see that Anthony Crol, his longtime friend, was waiting for him. They had crewed several ships together, but this would be different. “Tony!” cried Philip as he spied his friend. “Pip! What’s going on? I heard you were called to Guilder’s office, and then a street kid comes running up to me telling me to meet you. He also said you told him I’d pay him two copper pieces to get me here.” “Smart lad. He doubled his pay for this job!” “I think you owe me two coppers, Pip.” The friends laughed a hearty laugh, then Anthony asked Pip “What’s going on?” “Tony, they gave me a ship. It’s just a small sloop, class 2WR, but I’m the captain!” At first Anthony was as stunned as Philip was in Guilder’s office, but stunned silence was quickly overcome by unbridled joy for his friend’s good fortune. “Wow! Congratulations, Pip! You’ve earned this.” “There’s more, Tony.” Philip paused to make sure he had his friend’s full attention. “I need to fill out the crew. Specifically, I need a second in command…” “What? You think I’d serve under you?” For a moment Philip was taken aback, failing to recognize Anthony’s mock disdain. Then Anthony broke into a sly smile. “Of course I would! Man, this is going to be something. The two of us in charge? The world had better look out!” Then, after a moment of thought, he asked “So, what ship did they give you?” Pip motioned down the pier. “Look behind you, Tony. There she is. The Lady of Madrice.” Philip was filled with pride. Tony, on the other hand, was half in shock and half stifling laughter. “The Wench?! You didn’t say you were given command of the Wench!” The Lady of Madrice was well known by her nickname among the local sailors. “Would you have turned down my offer if I’d have told you?” “Of course not, but you didn’t say it was the Wench.” Anthony was having fun tweaking Philip about this. “Tony, she may be a bit aged and have a long history of being passed down from captain to captain, but she’s a lovely lady to me, and I will not have you calling her that!” And then Philip broke into a big grin. “What did you expect, the Eslandia?” “Tell me you didn’t call her the Wench to Guilder’s face.” “Of course not!” Philip replied. “But I had to bite my tongue not to! Come on, let’s give her the once over and see what she needs.” Anthony snickered in response, but then put on a straight face and went aboard. The crew was busy loading supplies into the hold. The sloop looked to be in fine form, with clean deck lines and fresh paint in MCTC colors on the sides. She had a crowded deck when loaded with four cannons, but piracy was a concern. She also sported two small swivel guns at the bow. The Lady of Madrice had served many captains well, and Philip was confident that she would serve him well, too.

I like it! The shack, the path leading away, and the rider on horseback all give it a sense of something larger. And you're taking advantage of the MCTC's cotton monopoly. Smart! -

Great build all around. I love the sugar cane plants and the hut (especially the roof). Great story, too. Protecting his reputation indeed! Well played.
