  1. This is my fourth free build of the month, so approvals and critiques are most welcome. * * * Even though Weelond is still too small of a town to gain any immediate benefit from properties in the hinterlands of An Holli, Weelond’s new mayor knew that that time would come. Additionally, Willem Guilder was a company man for the MCTC through and through. So, to take advantage of the MCTC’s cotton monopoly, Guilder bought some prime land not far from town and set up a medium-sized cotton plantation. The growing season is apparently surprisingly short, as his workers are already busy picking cotton! Once the crop comes in, he plans on expanding the plantation even more. * * * I am ineligible for the rebates offered for building and licensing properties in Weelond this month, so the rebates are still available. The next two properties licensed in Weelond in February by MCTC members who have not previously built in Weelond will get 2db back (from me). Additionally, at the end of the month, I'll award an extra 3db to the best non-residential property licensed in Weelond. The citizens of Weelond are particularly in need of artisan’s shops!
  2. I've always been fascinated by xebecs. Great ship! The purple highlights are excellent! And even with those menacing cannons, you have her looking like a proper merchant vessel. Well done!
  3. That mangrove is stunning! The water is quite good, too, and the whole composition of the build is well done. Beautiful entry!

  5. Anwok and Jynil awoke to their baby crying. Jynil nursed her child, then prepared him for their trip to the orchard. Anwok and Jynil thought that their child was the only new part of their morning trip. Jynil wrapped him securely and put him on her back. Then they went to pick apples. Then they saw … them. As they looked down upon the beach, they saw three people, but they wore strange clothes. Off in the distance was a large vessel, unlike anything Anwok and Jynil had seen before. They had heard the stories of strangers visiting the island -- everybody had -- but the stories were so old that nobody on the island still alive had ever seen any. But the strangers on the beach fit the stories well. The vessel was a large as in the stories. Their clothing was an odd mix; Anwok presumed the overdressed one in the middle was the leader. They did not appear threatening. Anwok told Jynil to go back and tell the elders about the visitors. Anwok would go down to the beach and present them with a gift of apples. … *** I wanted to play with forced perspective in this build, and also thought it would be fun to take the point of view of the natives rather than the explorers. The scene also serves as a step back from my build for challenge 1B, which is a close-up of the explorers on the beach. An overhead view of the build:
  6. Captain’s Log of Philip Janszen, commanding the sloop Lady of Madrice, 15 Feb 616, somewhere east of Nellisa: After two weeks at sea, land was spotted. Hendrikson was on duty in the crow’s nest when, just before 8 bells, he sighted a shape on the horizon to the east-southeast. Adjusting our course to intercept, we soon determined that it was not a sail, but rather a small island. I conferred with Anthony Crol, my second in command, and we agreed that we must make landfall. We anchored our sloop and I ordered Crol to remain aboard while I commanded an away party of three to investigate the island. We did not know what to expect, and, although we saw no sign of inhabitants from our vantage point, we armed ourselves in case of hostiles. I also took a small pennant, and when we made landfall, I claimed the island for Eslandola and the MCTC. *** The beach didn't turn out how I had hoped, but I'm fairly happy with the technique I used for the surf. I also dabbled in some forced perspective with the anchored ship in the background. Here's an overhead view of the build:
  7. I love it! Good representation of the casting process. And I like the sliding doors on the building.
  8. I didn't realize the Colonel was living on Weelond. Very good! I like the windows. Good furniture, too. And of course, good story!
  9. Thanks Bregir! I just figured it made sense to use the mayor's salary as an investment tool of sorts. Hopefully it works.
  10. Nice ship! It has a good color scheme and nice lines overall. I like that you show some of the hold, account for the ship's boat, and have attempted to add tumblehome to the sides. I think the effect would have been better with taller slopes, but I like it none the less. I approve!
  11. A quick note to all MCTC members: as mayor of Weelond, I'm offering a rebate for properties built and licensed in Weelond this month. The next two properties licensed in Weelond in February by MCTC members who have not previously built in Weelond will get 2db back (from me). Additionally, at the end of the month, I'll award an extra 3db to the best non-residential property licensed in Weelond. Next month I'll do something like this open to all BoBS players, but I wanted to encourage MCTC members to build in Weelond this month!
  12. I've been experimenting with the same siding technique. I like your results!
  13. Willem Guilder sat at his desk, parchment in front of him and quill in his hand. Progress had been slow since the MCTC established a settlement on An Holli, and Guilder was ready to do something about it. The settlement of Weelond was growing, but it needed a something more. He wrote: *** TO: Guy K. Wyndzon MCTC Headquarters Subject: Future growth of Weelond Sir, I submit this in addition to my usual trade report. If I may speak freely, I think the MCTC is missing an opportunity with this outpost. Growth has been promising this month, but it needs a more active hand to build it into the jewel of the MCTC this side of Terraversa. While having your uncle out and about on the island tormenting defaulters is admirable (and I applaud his “big stick” policy in general), it has done little to rally investment in this place. I believe the MCTC needs someone in place to direct development, and even act dare I say as a recruiter, for the island in general and this settlement in particular. I see no reason why this can’t be a large town within a few months, and a true city within another 9 months after that. With two settlements (Weelond and Bardo) in the same trade zone, we have a unique opportunity to market our ports to traders who fear the pirate scum that roam the Sea of Storms, as long as we grow them into profitable ports of call for Eslandolan and other traders. I have heard of Colonel Oystrigde in Bardo, and he is a man I can work with. If he were made director of Bardo, and I were made director of Weelond, I believe we could forge a united plan for rapid growth in these islands. I humbly submit my name for consideration as director of Weelond. I await your reply. Your humble servant, Willem Guilder MCTC Regional Trade Manager Weelond, An Holli *** Guilder waited for the ink to dry, then sealed the letter with wax. Then he got up from his desk and went down to the docks to find the fastest available ship. This letter must go out immediately. The MCTC was built on aggressive action; this could not wait.
  14. Very nice! It has a very refined feel overall. I would approve if I could. I love the fountains, and Enrico Sombrero Verde's name and hat.
  15. Thanks to everyone for all the comments. Yep, you're right. Not sure why I have the barrels standing up. I wish I could! I worked from a couple of illustrations and just threw a bunch of parts together, but I really don't have a grasp of exactly what each part is. I'm trying to, but a couple of my buildings are missing roofs or floorboards they had a couple of weeks ago. And if I do many more, I'm either going to have to start spending a lot more on bricklink or tearing some of these down.

  18. This is my third free build of the month, so approvals and critiques are most welcome. Samuel Amwell’s family have been brewers for generations, but Samuel is the first of his family to leave the mainland and move to the islands. In Weelond on the island of An Holli, Samuel has opened the Weelond Brewing Company. The tropical setting is perfect for growing the sugarcane necessary for distilling rum, and the ingredients for his family’s ale are also plentiful. Samuel works diligently to make sure his rum and ale are the best in the islands, and Eslandolan sailors near and far are quickly becoming familiar with WBC beverages.
  19. This is the home of Albertus and Jannetje Stoutenburg in Weelond. Their son is a crew member aboard the Lady of Madrice in the service of the MCTC, but Albertus never understood the calling of the sea. Nevertheless, to be closer to his son, the family moved to Weelond on An Holli. But Albertus likes his feet planted firmly on land. He learned the craft of working with leather at an early age, apprenticed with a cobbler, and has been a cordwainer ever since. Albertus and Jannetje maintain this tidy little home on the edge of the commercial district of town, and Albertus uses the prime location to maintain his shop from the comfort of his home. He maintains a commercial storefront from the side of the house. Although Albertus mainly makes shoes and boots, he also works on other leather items such as belts, pouches, baldrics, and various leather fittings. Jannetje makes sure the front flowerbeds are always presentable, but Albertus bricked up one of the windows for wall space needed in his shop. At the corner of a busy crossroads in Weelond, the picturesque house is a local landmark.
  20. I love it! Great use of sand green. And I see you're taking no chances with claim jumpers with those armed guards!
  21. I love the wall technique! Nice build!
  22. Fun build! I'm working on a build that might be relevant: a law office. Sinbad needs representation. But Guy's uncle looks like a tough legal adversary.
  23. I've got a question about owing land (rather than ships): the EGS rules say there is a fee for expanding the size of a previously purchased plot. What is that fee? Is it simply the difference in cost of the two sizes, or is something more tacked on?
  24. Kai NRG, thanks for clarifying. Now just awaiting the "fix-it". Thanks!
  25. Where is the free build form? I thought we only had to post in the free build thread, and that there was just a form if you licensed it. I'm confused now! OK, found the FB form, and submitted one for my new February build, but I can't figure out how to see if I submitted the FB forms for my January builds. Any help would be appreciated.
