[HELP] Semi truck axles
Beck replied to aminnich's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Search this topic: FYI I am working on a twinsteer front axle without drive using linkages and "leafsprings" so I will send you the LXF when I am finished. -
Very impressive at this scale! Did you ask yourself should you, before thinking about how it could be done? As a non-powered model, why would you add a function that is derived from movement? Don't get me wrong, you must have done some amazing work to fit all of this stuff into such a small scale, but do you think it makes sense? On a side note your front "leaf springs" look fragile, as the axle could pop out of the connector piece given a sufficient force. The added weight of a cabin may cause problems; however, the lack of heavy pf elements may make your system feasible. I have been experimenting with lego leaf springs for over a year now, so I thought I'd just give you my opinion.

Steering for Fast Vehicles
Beck replied to rkkm's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Simple: use gears to change the maximum deflection of the servo. 8 and 24 tooth gears will reduce the deflection angle by 1/3, so 30 degrees. Remember that two gears will offset the return position of the servo, so add 3 or more to solve this problem. Keep in mind that more gears increase backlash, which decreases the accuracy of your steering system. -
Your work is very inspiring and make it look like child's play. Wait, you actually asked the manufacturer to send you detailed information about the design? What was the premise on which you sent the email. Did you mention that you were making a LEGO model? I seriously hope that you get a response! One small observation, The 1x3 tile adjacent to the fake drive sprocket looks like it will just fall off as it is only held on by one stud. You might consider replacing it with a 2x3 tile, if possible.
-
The body looks great, but the bogies are disproportionate. I think the frontmost axle on each bogie looks like it is one stud too close to the front. However the buffers are fine where they are.

[MOC] Blacktron "Liberator" MBT
Beck replied to Kelkschiz's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
With that type of traverse speed your tank could be repurposed as a g force simulator. In all seriousness, I really love it! Did any of the four Buggy motors overheat after driving the tank around for some time? -
Stunning footage! Great video and such a unique idea. Thank you for sharing! Was there any problem with the train in the colder temperatures?

Thank you both very much! After waiting 2.5 weeks for the ball bearings to arrive the package contained a letter from the seller stating that they were out of stock and an appeasement "gift." Two weeks later I received the bearings and began experimenting on how to modify my existing rolling stock. I decided on using a technic brick 1x2 with 2 holes, but quickly found out that the bearings could not be pressed in by hand. I used some pliers to squeeze them into the brick and fitted the metal axle in to adjust the bearing so that it was flush with the side face of the brick. This was NOT fun, but the result was worth the time and effort. http://bricksafe.com/pages/Beck/train_mocs/ball-bearings I don't have or want a youtube account, so you will have to download the video from my bricksafe. http://bricksafe.com/pages/Beck/train_mocs/traxx-ac3---2.0/traxx-in-motion Thanks for reading.

[MOC] Zil 130 Soviet dumping truck
Beck replied to Samolot's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Looks very realistic. How durable/sturdy is the virtual pivot axle. It appears that the lift arms could easily pop off of the wheel hubs. In your video you shifted gears without stopping; how smooth was this gear change while in motion,?- 20 replies

Superb work! The tram depot is gorgeous; I'd love to have one myself. However, I think the other station is a little bit bland. You could add the clipboards as white 1x1 tiles to the side of the building and the electronic sign below the roof as shown in the last picture on the second post.
-
You've got some great fire appliances! I'd like to point out that the wheels the on-road trucks look a bit too wide. I think substituting this part would make them more realistic. I know they don't fit on to the rims in LDD but in real life they fit snugly.

M.A.N TGX 18.400
Beck replied to KikoTube's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Looks like you've got the overall shape; however, I feel the model is a little bit bland. For instance you might add a cap on the fuel tank, a latch on the toolbox below the trailer, mudflaps, hubcaps on the rear wheels, or the hydraulic and electric hookups on the rear of the cabin. From your photos, it appears that you have the space to add a cabin interior, but I might be wrong about this. For a model this size you could certainly spend a little time to significantly improve the overall appearance of the model. -
I first want to test the feasibility of adding the ribs, but I will also begin figuring out the decals. Thank you! I didn't forget about the plow; I chose not to model it because I did not want to add another small detail that would get caught on various bits on layouts. Downsizing the plow is an alternative that I am willing to consider. Thank you very much!

Thank you! I spent a considerable amount of time on the battery box mounting since the battery box accessibility on my previous version was less than ideal. Yep, I completely agree that the sides are a bit plain. My older variant had the ribs on the sides, which gave it more texture, but I had to sacrifice the ribbing to mount the XL motors. Although I may be able to make the ribs on this one in the future. The less common version of this train which my new model is based off of has a complex logo on the side, which would be almost impossible to model in LEGO. I've never really had any experience with decals, so I really dont know what I want to do. ^^https://farm6.static.flickr.com/5513/31320321446_0686908231_b.jpg^^ Good to hear that the proportions are an improvement! I cannot take credit for the SNOT grille technique as I found it on Bricktrix's flickr. Although the side windows are a bit of a dissapointment in my eyes, I've learned that building in LEGO is all about compromises.

Hello Everyone! It was almost a year ago when I finished my TRAXX AC3, and during that time I was able to identify some of its flaws and strengths. In LDD it appeared to be very proportional, but in real life the scale left something to be desired. Over the past month I have reworked the scaling by using the manufacturer's scale drawing. Here's the old thread for comparison: I was displeased with the amount of power & torque produced by the PF train motors, so I opted for two XL motors geared 3:1. I was also forced to use geared bogies since the PF train motors were not scaled for this model. I realize that the side windows are about one stud too far away from the front of each end, but I could not find a way to fix this without compromising the realism of the windshield. I had hoped to fit the AA battery box inside the locomotive, but there would be no space remaining for the receiver. I considered using BBB medium drivers since the PF train wheels are a bit too small, but this would prevent the bogie from rotating since the wheels protrude upwards into the locomotive. I'll let the pictures do the rest of the talking. More Photos: http://bricksafe.com/pages/Beck/train_mocs/traxx-ac3---2.0 Thanks for reading! P.S. I will make a video as soon as my ball bearings arrive for my cargo wagons.

Love it! It seems you have become very skilled at making peculiar compact powered locomotives. For the central axle you could have used this part, which is designed to have the axle slide through it. My response to the designer of this loco:

I was able to fit 2 PF L motors into the train with a battery box and receiver into the train. I tried to not stray too far away from Kiko's design, while adding minor details and cosmetic changes. I purposely didn't attach one bar on the top of the cabin so that the 4x6 plate can be removed for battery access. Kikotube, I noticed that you built your model in LDD extended, which allows you to change the color any part in the inventory, even if the part is not available in that color. Your "white" was not actually white (not sure if this was intentional), rather it was "Light stone grey," a color exclusively used in the old NXT kits. This is not a problem if you are not planning on building this model IRL. Your non-powered bogie used technic axles, which create a substantial amount of friction. I hope you like it and it is useful to you in some way. Look at the caption: http://www.bahnbilder.de/bild/oesterreich~e-loks~br-1163/423126/oebb-1163-007-6-mit-einem-containerzug.html It looks really good! You're quickly improving your train-building skills. I don't understand what you mean when you say it has a 9v battery, but doesn't have room for PF. Anyways, I'd really like to try to fit PF into this train, so if there's a way that you could share the LXF with me I'd really appreciate it. I think your pantograph is a bit messy and could be improved. Here's my design for a similar pantograph http://bricksafe.com/pages/Beck/train_mocs/railpool-traxx-ac3-lm/wip This locomotive is predominately used as a shunter and sometimes is used for short distance freight traffic. You're probably mistaking the photos on the internet of this loco shunting passenger cars, as a regional passenger train.
-
You did a great job in keeping the train to scale while squeezing all of the pf and 9v components into such a small model! However I must say that it looks very bland. However it is still more interesting than the bulleid Q1 class .

Looks fantastic- I have found that XL motors and pf train motors are the only logical choices for powering trains excluding shunters. I would try to redo the drive system however I understand how difficult this could be. Adding another battery box ma also improve the performance. Great moc!
