Thanks, I just want it to be a fair competition. I understand the logic behind the rule and I fully agree with it. And now I am a little sad too. I don't know which of the awesome entries I will distribute my points to!

Hi Jim, I have a question. On the general rules section of this contest, there is a rule: "Voting is only allowed for existing members (which means member date before start date of contest)". Does this apply to the contestants too? If the contestants who joined before that date could vote and the contestants who joined after could not, wouldn't that create a disadvantage for the latter?

This is definitely one of my favourites. The looks are spot-on Toyota FJ. I would love to build this when I get home, if you share the ldd.

[MINI] Garbage Truck
zweihander replied to zweihander's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
@grum64: Wow, you and Jake (I'm guessing he's your son :) ) make me feel very happy. @rollermonkey: I have 7 pieces left, and I have the container from mini container truck, but I don't feel it fits with the rest of the model, so I opted for not to add a container. I also built a technic container for around 20 pieces but I don't want to reduce pieces from the main model in fear of losing its charm. @Jim: Thank you for the great comments. The LDD file is attached somewhere above :) I can't take a bottom picture right now because I am on vacation until next week :) -
[MINI] Garbage Truck

Thanks, I worked on it until 3 am last night :) I uploaded some more hi-res photos to a flickr album if anyone wants to take a look. One photo I like: And here is my first photo studio. Very, very amateur, but it did the job :) -

For the past week, I've taken it apart and rebuilt it so many times, I lost count. I'm pretty pleased with its current state, so I thought I should post an update. Here are the list of changes: - HoG steering added. This was really challenging, but worthwhile. - Reworked lifter: shape is closer to real, resting position improved, used rigid hoses instead of axles on the forks for easy positioning into beam holes. Removed old gear mechanism, it is now operated by hand. - Reworked chassis, container and tilting mechanism. - Front and tail lights added, much better looks. Current list of features: - Tilting container - HoG steering - Lifter mechanism - Adjustable seats ( mini-feature :) ) - Auto-opening back lid (mini-feature ) It's now 193 pieces. I reserved the last 7 pieces for a bin. I'm waiting for my brother to ship my pre-dark-ages legos, I have some parts that may be quite useful for it. (that are also among the suggestions, thank you) Here are some pictures: And here it is, with its bigger brothers for scale :D P.S: LDD file coming soon. P.P.S: Sorry for the bad photo quality and lighting. I'll make sure to find a good camera for the entry picture :) -
One of my concerns is the strength of the IR. Maybe I can try using the raspberry for playback. Not really, the link I sent includes how to emit IR using the same LED and headphone jacks in a different configuration. Therefore the phone only needs a 3.5 mm headphone jack. My flatmate has a galaxy s5, If it has one, I may try it. other than that, I don't have the money to spend on a new smartphone just for this. Buying 9398 and 8110 set me back a little :D

Hey everyone, First, I considered using my raspberry pi to create a DIY customizable PF remote. Then I read somewhere that someone had done it, and sometimes it failed because of raspberry pi not being real time and missing some IR emitting intervals. Then I found this article. It explains how to record IR signals as audio stream using 2 IR LED's and a headphone jack, and replay them. I want to give it a try, and if it succeeds, develop an app for smartphones that can be used with a DIY emitter and used as a customizable PF remote. Has anyone tried this before? What do you think?

I think it's a very good idea, might be fun. I'm not sure I can join in but simply watching the progress would also be fun. Yes, it would be good, but everyone might not be familiar with version control concepts. A spreadsheet shared via google docs might be another good place to track the versions, with columns like version, last edited by, file link, changes. People can also create a new row without the file link, to show who is currently working on the project, like a reservation for the next release.

Mini ausrada
zweihander replied to yys530's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Nicely done. I think it would be nice if you could also post an image of the original ausrada (and maybe a little explanation), for the ones who don't what ausrada is :) -
Linear Actuator Gearbox
zweihander replied to anton1678's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I have actuators, and I know how they work. The model was to show the idea to give a more compact output setup, not provide a fully working, structurally complete example. -
Linear Actuator Gearbox
zweihander replied to anton1678's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Well, I like this idea and i've been toying with it for the past hour or so. I built a more compact version and here it is:: Isometric view: Top View: Side View: The problem with this is the engaging of the gears when moving the input.. We can make the system wider, use beveled gear for the input gear and add a bevel gear between the input and each output, but it may still be problematic. Also, this setup reguires the input motor to move, which would not be very stable in terms of stress. To rectify this, we can fix the input motor and use the red 8t sliding gear, but I'm not sure what its counterpart has to be. Shifting would also be problematic in this case. I'll share the ldd file as soon as i can. -
[MINI] Lawn Tractor
zweihander replied to Eraman's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I really like this, it is very cute. I would really consider buying it if I saw it on the shelves :) But the question in my head would be, can the blade section be lifted? I'm not sure if the real ones have this feature but my guess is they do, otherwise wouldn't it scrape on harder surfaces like tarmac when I try to park it in my garage? -
Linear Actuator Gearbox
zweihander replied to anton1678's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Can't you just remove the axle with 4 clutch gears, and shift all the outputs lower? Something like this: The blue clutch gear is the input and the colored axle extensions are the output. Sorry I couldn't work on the actuator mechanism, I'm at work :), But I think you get the idea. -
Help me choosing

My vote would definitely be the stratos. It's such a beautiful car, and it's body would be both challenging and beautiful in lego. -
[MINI] Garbage Truck
zweihander replied to zweihander's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Yeah, the lifter mechanism is in the back in my country too, like this one. But what I tried to achieve is trucks like these, with the color scheme of this. I haven't seen the 7599 before, but it seems its proportions are very similar to mine. That makes me happy, thanks. Well, I have some modifications in mind. The first one is steering, but that will be a hard task because I will have to modify the chassis, otherwise tires will bump into it. After that I want to add a bin, but a functional bin may require a lot of parts (hmm, maybe I should try to build it with system panels). If I still have parts left, I'd like to modify the top part of the container and add a lid that can cover the open section. But I'm already very close to the parts limit, I'm not sure if I can squeeze in any of these. I got a 8110 Unimog yesterday, and all my evening went to building and playing with it, so I didn't have a chance to work on this (I regret nothing, the unimog is awesome :) ). Hopefully I'll get on this tonight. *edit: the third truck link was wrong apparently, corrected it :) -
[MINI] Garbage Truck
zweihander replied to zweihander's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Thank you all for your comments, you guys are very encouraging :) That's actually in the plans, but my priority is making the body look better for now. -
Hi everyone, here is my entry to the MINI contest. First, a little background info. It's been around a month since I woke up from my dark ages, and I can say that this is my first MOC that looks somewhat like the real thing :) It's a garbage truck, with the lifter mechanism in the front. It has two or three functions, depending on what you call a function :) 1 - The front lifter mechanism, obviously, 2 - The container section tilts for dumping, 3 - The back part opens automatically when the container is tilted. The right dark bluish gray connector controls the tilting, and its left light bluish gray counterpart controls the lifter. This version is around 180 pieces. I have some modifications in mind, that will probably pull the part count around 200, but will improve the looks. (hint: headlight and tail light sections.) I also want to modify the lifter mechanism and squeeze in steering if I can but I haven't had a chance to work on it in the past week, so, time will tell :) I like the color scheme a lot, I think it suits a garbage truck quite nicely. I don't like the tires though, but I can't find smaller tires that fit the scale. The current ones are from 42023. Do you have any suggestions? Hope you guys like it. P.S. : Thanks for this great contest, it's helping me a lot in experimenting with building techniques. Apparently I forgot a lot in the past 15 lego-less years (I am 29). I built two other entries before this: one tow truck and one snow groomer, but both were too big.

Little Dump Truck
zweihander replied to Appie's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
That is a fantastic moc. I love both the looks and the functionality. But i'm secretly hoping that you do not enter the competition with this, because my garbage truck and this look like each other. You'll see what i mean when i unveil mine in a couple of days. -

Turns out I was doing something wrong. I was trying to post the link to the flicker page, and expecting the forum software to extract the image from that page (like facebook status) because I couldn't find the direct link to the image. Now, I found it, and here is the proof: This sits on my desk at work :) P.S: I think that feature would be nice :D -

When I try to post an image hosted on flickr, it says " You are not allowed to use that image extension on this community. " Is it because I am new? Or is it because I'm doing something wrong?
