1. Drave's Emporium of Curiosities, Owner: Grayther Drave
2. While waiting for the captain to return the crew of the Bleak Angel witness a small skirmish. Under orders from First Mate Jakes the crew take the opportunity to retrieve some of the lost valuables from the sea floor. Only a handful of the crew are skilled enough to both reach the depths the shipwreck lays at, and bring the hold of the sunken hold back to the surface. A couple more pictures showing off the overall build behind the spoiler button. As this is my third Freebuild this month, Approvals would be appreciated.
3. Previously Complications The drawback of having to escape from an Oleonder fortress is that, afterwards, you are still on Oleon soil... ...with the Navy's marines chasing after you through the streets as you try to find your contact... ...who may have noticed the commotion you have caused and is waiting in ambush… ...or may just be keeping herself from getting caught up in the mayhem… And this would be where the sunlight suddenly disappeared and the lighting suddenly became significantly less than great. Although one saving grace was that the blueish tint and heavy shadows did make the scene look a little more like night time, following on from the black backdrop in "Breaking Out". Sadly today I did not have access to my partner's photography set up, so all the pictures today were taken in my living room with our high megapixel phone cameras.
4. One aspect of life as a Sea Rat goes unmentioned by the advertising material: That not all plunder is of immediate value to the plunderer. For sure that coinage, jewels, food, ammunition, clothes and craft materials are all of use to a Sea Rat or their ship but other items are of limited use and limited market. Books only matter to those few Sea Rats who can read. A captain's cabin only has so much room for art, and any sensible collector of art will not put it in a cannonball's path. As for antiques, relics and native trinkets, well, those are just wasted space to many. But everything is of value to someone, if you know who and how. That is where Grayther Drave comes in. Drave's emporium serves as a clearing house for items of select market, where a freshly returned crew may unload those more unusual and esoteric items found on their journeys. The ground floor stocks and sells all sorts of small trinkets and oddities for the curious, superstitious or eccentric. But Drave's real success is his other market. For back on the mainland, and in the various colonies, there is a market for rare books, forbidden tomes and native treasures. Some dare visit his store in person. A letter of introduction from an existing client is necessary for a potential customer go gain access the goods kept in the old vaults below the emporium. The rumours that Drave deals in occult goods and supposedly cursed treasures is widespread. One tale claims the man's mask is to hide the consequences of one particularly potent hex. Another claims the mask hides scars from an accident involving alchemy. Rumours that Drave deals with information and has spies across the Sea of Storms persist. Drave employs a young woman named Yukio as a bodyguard and to provide additional security for the store. Thieves are not too common, however, as few want to risk stealing one of the supposedly cursed artifacts. Here, Drave sells a dangerousvaluable book to one of his regular customers, Jacqueline "Jack" Yharnam.
5. Well, I'm impressed
6. So she's finally finished, awesome.
7. And I thought someone using the Anacondrai was surprising... was not expecting to see Nexo Knight's lava creatures. Also, I'm digging the small overgrown walls.
8. Panic-buying AFOLs? Already low stock levels, so those few before Christmas were the last few? Note that not selling well is not the same as not selling at all.
9. Not sure sharks have much of a taste for apples, but they do seem to eat everything else, so it may work out. I am pretty impressed by the sea bed build. Are the minifig flippers supposed to be coral?
10. Probably going to go post this in the MOC WIP/Feedback thread for some advice with next couple of stages, but here's a preview of my Sigfig's ship, the Bleak Angel. I've been using LDD to test out ideas before bricklinking parts to actually build the thing. Currently waiting on the pieces to fill out the sides of the hull. I had to build stand-ins for the front/end hull pieces as I'm using the old-style prefabs that I found at a toy & collector fair a couple of years back. The cabin does currently exist in physical form, I just don't have pics yet.
11. Using the red brick-pattern bricks to represent the damage was one of the first ideas I had for this build. Just seemed a natural fit. As for the boat, well, the ship was unavailable (due to still being built). Like many others I'm rather reliant on having decent natural lighting, and the recent weather has been uncooperative. Again, it seemed obvious. The bricks in the Soldier's Fort seemed to represent broken, peeling paint and I figured there'd be a lot of that after a cannonball hit the place. Just as soon as I work out how to build the next couple of scenes from my fairly limited supply of bricks. I'm gonna need the doubloons if I ever want to license the ship I'm working on. And I'd like to thank everyone for their kind words. This is only my second real MOC, so i was worried about how well it would go down.
12. I can't remember where they came from, which means it was either Bricklink or out of the build-a-minifig at my local Lego store (which is where almost the entire sigfig came from).
13. Thanks. Sadly, grey overcast weather and no daylight lamp made the lighting a bit of a pain; these were taken at the best chance we got (my girlfriend, who knows what she is doing with a camera, took these pictures). And I've just noticed the a gap in some of the bricks on the middle layer. Oops. As for the fort, I decided to go with the general stylings of the current/just retired sets, but with a more solid walls on the lower levels. What doesn't appear in any of these is the large flag attached to the top level - the upper archway would (if actually part of a larger structure) lead back inside that balcony being for the raising and lowering of the flag. Thank you. I like to start things with a bang, so we're straight into the action here.
14. The map he sought was on LeBellan. That was sure enough to complicate things, but Leon Dracken was not put off... Perhaps he should have been. Finding himself locked up by the Oleon Navy was not part of the plan. Luckily, his cell overlooked the bay, and his crew were in town. The Garrison Commander had just finished bragging about Dracken's upcoming execution when the cannonball struck the corner of his cell. Moments later, Dracken was outside, and rescue - of sorts - approaching. The Oleon soldiers above him were not so lucky. Dracken's crew, including Master Gunner Kite, were coming, with a boat. Dracken readied himself for the jump to the boat. The soldiers would just have to rescue themselves. And then, Complications ensued... Unfortunately the lighting wasn't great while these pictures were being taken. These were the best of the bunch.
15. Last time that got asked we got this answer: And if I ever get any progress done on my freebuilds, certain mystical elements will be working their way into them.
16. A man in a uniform much older than he, Captain Leon Dracken is a notorious pirate with another man's name, or so it seems. Decades ago, at the height of the Forty-Nine Year War, Leon Dracken was an Oleon Admiral declared lost at sea. He returned, a pirate, captain of the Bleak Angel. This Captain Dracken is far too young to be him, but the resemblance to his portrait at the Oleon Naval Academy is uncanny. The rumours that he leads a crew of heretics and witches may not be just that. His impressive escape from an Oleon prison just adds to his legend. Apologies that the picture is not the greatest, not ideal lighting conditions and having to use my phone's camera are not a great combination.
17. Just finished building an introductory MOC for my sigfig, but won't be able to get any decent photos until tomorrow.
18. Maybe they're unavailable, having been part of a licensed line? There are parts from other Disney-based lines that seemingly can't be used outside of the license.
19. Recieved 70409, 70410 and 70411 as slightly early birthday presents yesterday. About to start building them now.
20. Definitely the Pirates.
21. I find I prefer the one with a hat. Not sure why.
22. The new(ish) guy here has a few things to add to the fantastic vs.historical discussion. The first, and most petty, is that BotBS is the reason I de-lurked and registered to post, but I'd be a lot less enthusiastic about it if fantasy elements were ruled out. Secondly, popular media of the last few decades has created a surprisingly rich line of "fantasy-enfused pirate" fiction that there is clearly something of a demand for and that isn't particularly suited for GoH. In the interests of openness and attractiveness to new members I'd recommend allowing traditional nautical fantasy elements: mermaids, sea monsters, ghost ships, etc. And preferably not cordoned off and isolated in one small area of the map. I wouldn't make them a full faction, but having fantastical elements as an option for freebuilds or something that can add a bit of flavour to another build should be allowed. Finally, having such elements could lead to interesting ideas for the other factions. I can imagine the Redcoats, from their write-up a few pages back, having two branches of "monster hunter", one dedicated to researching and classifying the supernatural to fit it into a scientifically acceptable model of the world, the other wanting rid of them as insults to science or to make the world make sense.
23. According to rule 8 in the announcement, no. Which is unfortunate as I'm currently suffering a distinct lack of physical bricks suitable for this.
24. The Lego shop in Manchester, UK, had all the new Princess sets on sale today.
