I'll second what everyone else has said - great work. I particularly liked the way the trailer tail section tilted out of the way when the ramps were lowered. Good job. Owen.

Some good answers here - I've got nothing really to add to those. However, if you're concerned about the limitation of the remote control system, you might want to check out the SBrick (http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=97800), a 3rd party product which uses bluetooth instead of IR. This was a kickstarter campaign that was recently funded, so assuming they get their production run going, you should be able to purchase one in the next few months. Owen.

Great! Send me an email (don't forget to remove the bits in CAPS) or a PM with your email address. I'll wait until the end of the month, and then make contact with everyone (I've got a couple of people already) pfft - I'm coming from 400km North of Perth, so don't give me that excuse! There's a first time for everything, and the beauty of this is that you only need to make a couple of modules (or even only one) - the rest of us will do the rest of the Contraption. Thanks Jim, I appreciate it. Owen.

I'm not sure whether to post this here in Technic/Mindstorms/Model Team or in the Events forum. On the one hand, it's clearly an Event, on the other hand, I need the exposure to the Technic community. I'll post it here, but I'll understand if a moderator wants to move it. My name is Owen, and I'm trying to get together a large GBC exhibit at next January's Brickvention in Melbourne, Australia. If you're able to get your modules to Melbourne, and are interested in helping celebrate 10 years of GBC, please email me at captainowie.REMOVETHIS@gmail.ANDTHIS.com, or send me a PM with your email address. Thanks Owen.

Bricktober - Perth WA 5th Oct 2014
Captainowie replied to technic70s's topic in LEGO Events and User Groups
Hi. My name is Owen, and I'm based in Geraldton. Are you taking exhibitors? I have a number of large Technic models (42009, 8110, 41999 and some others) and some GBC modules that I could display. -

Great work. I've been looking forward for years to seeing how you'd treat possibly the greatest Technic set ever (disagree with me if you like, but you have to admit that it'd be right up there). One thing I noticed when building it myself (many years ago now) was the way the building steps were ordered. They kept you guessing until the last minute how each function was going to work. For example, there was one point where two 16t gears were near each other but not engaged, so you thought you were building two separate mechanisms, but then you slide one gear back to mesh with the other, and all of a sudden a function (I think it was the ailerons) is nearly done! Blakbird, I was admiring what you've done with the files I gave you, and I noticed that the connector block just above the 24t gear in 8233 seems to be 1/2 stud offset from where it's supposed to be - perhaps our versions of the LDraw part differ in origin. -

Should there be a new thread created for this? It'd be nice to have the list of models required, with a name beside each "checked out" model, that can be crossed out when that model is completed. I realise that this would take a bit of work to maintain, but would make for a great community project. -

I'll probably be able to do a couple more - I'll second the suggestion of a list of missing models. Owen. -
Generic Contest Discussion
Captainowie replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Re: Public vs Private voting. Having the votes all in public means that anyone can audit the results if they wish. If anybody claims that their model wrongfully didn't win, it's easy to demonstrate that the votes weren't there. I haven't been able to think of an advantage to private voting that outweighs this accountability. This is the first contest that I've been involved in here, but I don't think this is an issue. At the moment, there have been 50+ votes cast, with only 20 people distributing their votes across fewer than 6 entries - most of those voted for 4 or 5 entries. I think a F1-style will actually limit an even distribution of votes in most cases. Owen. -
I respectfully disagree. The combined image is not supposed to be the only thing people look at to assign votes - it's something to allow you to see all the entries side-by-side for comparison, and help you remember which one is which. You can't complain that people can't be bothered to go to three different topics to decide how to cast their votes, while at the same time advocating for removing the one feature that means they don't have to. Also Jim: I've noticed that not everyone is consistent with the formatting of the votes - sometimes there's a space (or two) before the colon, sometimes there's two (or zero) spaces after the colon. I'm sure you're already on top of it, but it may pay to make sure your regex can handle it.

After much deliberation, this is how I'm voting: 8: 4 16: 4 29: 4 39: 4 41: 4 I really wanted to give some votes to 31, but unfortunately I think it'd be too fiddly for an official LEGO set. Fantastic model though. I really wanted to give some votes to 46, but the WIP thread says that it's an older model cut down to 200 parts. The rules state that entries need to be new. I really wanted to give some votes to 55, but the garish colour scheme makes it unlikely as an official set. I really wanted to give some votes to most of the rest of the entries, but, you know, voting for everybody is no better than voting for nobody.
-
"Could this be on the shelf of my local LEGO reseller and would I but it?" Minor typo there :-) Otherwise the instructions seem fairly straightforward. Thanks allanp for preparing that picture. Would it be possible to include the number for each entry in the picture? Perhaps also include the compilation picture in the voting thread? Owen.

Batteries
Captainowie replied to jodawill's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I'll add one more voice to those saying that a mains-power solution is full of win. I knocked something together from an old PC power supply. It does require a bit of soldering, but once you're done, you have as much power as you can eat. I wrote up what I did here http://www.lugnet.com/~2801/PowerSupply. If you don't want to go so far (which you probably won't unless you're using several motors at the same time), it's relatively easy to hot-wire a battery box to plug into a standard 9v adapter. There are lots of resources on the internet (including plenty of threads from this forum) to help. Good luck! Owen. -
Nice work. I propose that this image is updated on close of the competition with all the entries. Being able to see them all in one place will help compare the entries to each other. I think that voting is going to be very tough, so we need all the help we can get! Owen.

"technic in all but name" indeed. If someone had MOC'd this, it would certainly be called a Technic MOC. I wonder how different it would be if it were designed today, with modern parts available (steering hubs etc).
