Brethren of the Brick Seas?
Kolonialbeamter replied to Admiral Croissant's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
I do understand these concerns. And I would never take them lightly. All I ask for is to not get started biased. Maybe it should simply be tried out. I just can't see seperated categories as a solution, simply for practical reasons, 'cause those in charge would have to spend resources for maybe just a few digital entries per challenge. It is easy to ask for such a system, but maybe not as easily realized. So I'd go for inclusion. And that's why I suggested to come up with a set of rules, which, when applied - and controlled by whatever way - might have possitive effects for everyone. And have you seen the quality of MOCs over at GoH? Yet, these high standards don't seem to discourage people from joining. Why should that be the case here? GoH is also a platform to increase members' building skills. After all, everything is a learning process. This new project here might try going one step further. And maybe, just maybe this issue is a non-issue 'cause hardly anyone will want to build digitally On a side note, trust me, building digitally does require to worry for 'photography' as well, at least if you want renders of your creation. They can take days, and often enough don't work out well. So, these problems are not uncomparable. But in the end I completely agree with you, I, too, can't wait for the full release From the rules of the ongoing challenge: 'Aftermarket products that cannot be replicated in LEGO are accepted, but should not be the defining element of a MOC. Weapons / armor from aftermarket sources is always fine.' Translated it would most likely mean that string and tissue won't be a problem concerning ship building. And seriously, not allowing string rigging in a ship builders' world would be letting us off way to easily, they'd in fact be doing us a favor, and if there's one thing to always count on it's the cruelty of those in charge -
Yeah, something like a 'MOC pipeline' or 'Help with MOCs' thread, or something even more general as you suggested would be nice... Could always start one and see if it catches on. But regarding your question, check out the reference of white hulled ships, Sebeus' 'Beatrix'. A true masterpiece. Good luck on your ship building endeavor!

Hi there, it's good to see another star fort in the making. Looking good so far Concerning your issues with the angles, my suggestion is to not use (slope) bricks for the base of the fort, but wedge plates instead. Here's a quick sample structure of what I mean: By using differently angled wedge plates and hinging them you can achieve quite a lot of possible angles for the base. Also, this SNOT technique offers easy decoration possibilities for the walls. Best of success for the next steps, Keep it up!

Brethren of the Brick Seas?
Kolonialbeamter replied to Admiral Croissant's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Wow... just wow. I'm not gonna go into this. Just wanted to quote it anyway, 'cause some comments are simply a delight worth double saving. You, Sir, made my day. -
Yeah, cool battle! Great details, vivid scene, the sails are my favorite. The ship itself still lacks some 'shipyness', but as a first ship MOC it's real good. Keep it up! Best regards, KB

This looks great. You should be awarded the title 'Official Set Improver' One question regarding the rendering... could you please tell me where you found the templates for all the new accessories?

My vote goes to The Brick Bounty, less cartoonish, CROW'S NEST (been waiting for this feature since 1989) 'nuff said.

Brethren of the Brick Seas?
Kolonialbeamter replied to Admiral Croissant's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
In the spirit of a building community I don't see seperating both ways as a favorable option. In fact, I could rather live with a total ban of digital creations from challenges than having seperated categories. Yes, we are only talking about accepting digital entries for the main challenges of BoBS here, so this doesn't address all the freebuilds and so on. But still, to me the goal should rather be inclusion to achieve a better acceptance of digital MOCs. So I'd put some effort into establishing rules to make them comparable in challenges. OK, building in the brick and digitally will never be exactly the same. But shouldn't we get to a point to see both as different, but equal? -
Had that same issue some minutes ago. Tried again and it worked. Good luck!

Most amazing! Both, the model and the renders. I'm absolutely speechless about that quality. Congrats to the both of you. Could you please link it to the Pirate MOC Forum? I'm sure the mateys over there will dig it, too. Best regards, KB

Arhh... Pirates don't need no driver's license! Never forget: Cars run on fuel... not on driver's licenses Kidding... a little. By the way, just had that same thought, so I placed an order, too. *Thrilled*

Wow, that B&P thing is amazing, I had heard that the LEGO shops would sell single minifigs from sets, but this is... so much more! Thanks a lot for the info!

Brethren of the Brick Seas?
Kolonialbeamter replied to Admiral Croissant's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Being allowed to build digitally is essential to me, too, since by now I almost forgot that I do own real bricks... (at least I said 'almost' ) Kiddings aside, joining main challenges with digital entries would mean a lot. But I also know about the concerns people have with digital creations. I don't feel like starting a debate here about real bricks vs. digital bricks, as that would be pointless. So instead, what are possible solutions to this matter: - allow only freebuilds, no digital (main) challenge entries. Clear rule, but quite conservative, in any case limiting participation. - no restrictions, simply let self regulation run its course by letting voters decide. Widest range of contribution possible from all builders, but could have a number of negative effects if people 'went nuts' with that much freedom, like leading to a decline of acceptance of digital builds or a drop of MOC quality. - allow digital entries to (main) challenges, but impose some sort of restriction, for example: -> allow only existing color-part combinations. Problem here would be control. -> don't allow 'unrealistic' techniques, such as, for example, 'floating bricks'. Problem here would be that sometimes 'unrealistic' techniques are needed to balance real bricks' building possibilities. For example LDD hardly features something equaling real life string. Sails and yards on ships, held in place by rigging, would be allowed for real-brick builders to build unattached to the masts. Building digitally, I would have to use 'floating bricks' to simulate this. So digital tools often enough are a restriction in themselves, you have to work around a lot of things that are common repertoire 'in the brick' to reach a similar result, like for example using a hand full of round trans blue 1x1 plates to 'build' water is (almost) impossible to do in LDD... And items such as weapons from 'brick warriors' and the like will never be useable digitally, neither will minifigure hands and single legs. That list goes on. In the end nothing is ideal, every solution has its pros and cons. My suggestion is, allow digital entries but strongly appeal to people to use only existing color-part combinations and be reasonable in general. After all, it is in their own interest to have their creations accepted by voters and staff. And in case of severe violation a Mod/Leader could always remove a particular entry from a contest. The final question however is, how much 'digital trouble' are the people in charge willing to deal with. Should it help making this possible, I'd be willing to help dealing with issues resulting from that decision. One last note on checking part-color combis: Yes, I know it is a mind numbing thing to do, and it can take an awful lot of time. If you happen to have a bricklink account, to 'final check' your MOC simply upload (not publish!) to their MOC-store. -
Hi there, it's good to see a fort matching the style of the sets. Large defensive structures like this are desperately needed to defend all that official LEGO 'harbor madness'... I like where this is going, modularity and coherence. Keep it up! Regards, KB

Hi Captain, this is a great sequel, story is getting real serious, the temple is well executed, monkeys are just eyecandy... and the vision of what's ahead is thrilling! Cannot wait for more MOC glory! Now go bananas, Captain! Best regards, KB- 10 replies

Brethren of the Brick Seas?
Kolonialbeamter replied to Admiral Croissant's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Should you still have trouble finding one leader for a/this particular faction... couldn't it be a solution to split up the work among several 'co-leaders' (two or three), supported by a GoH veteran like you, kabel? Of course this could only work out if all of them are dedicated and noone is in just 'for the glory'. Having more people involved in responsible positions would also mean to have more people in training, so more possible input, and a broader staff as sort of a 'reserve' that could work/deal with issues where needed. But this might require more monitoring... and I don't know if that is wanted/possible to put up. -

Brethren of the Brick Seas?
Kolonialbeamter replied to Admiral Croissant's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
It was that name after all... BoBS hurray! Thank you so much for this huge update! It was a great pleasure to read. It's great to hear you are on schedule, and the effort all of you are putting into this really is showing. Any chance of getting to know an approximate start date? It isn't June again, is it? Thanks again for sharing this info and your time with us. Also, best of success with the ongoing GoH challenge. Wow, that clearly must be a lot of work. The story is huge, and that battle mechanic sounds very promising. Best regards, KB -
Hi there, looking good so far, especially the stair designs are neat. Five guns on a two midsection build seems a bit crowded, but hey, firepower is power, right I suggest you think about a (semi) open gun deck, just like (almost) every official LEGO ship has it, for reasons of playability and display purposes. Or do you intend to put more guns onto your ship? Keep it up Regards, KB

Creative genius at destructive work! Very nice MOC, great atmosphere at the spa. Oh, and Han rightfully shot first! Keep it up... and JJB down!

Brethren of the Brick Seas?
Kolonialbeamter replied to Admiral Croissant's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Alright, new month, new chance. Is there any status update on this? Is there anything to contribute? Being able to enter a dialog here with the development group or in general a more open development process of this project could be one way to pursue in order to answer kabel's remark I do like your approach to this, especially the starting small aspect, since leadership seems to be major issue in holding this thing back... Oh, and thumbs up for the country names you've come up with  -
Excellent reinterpretation of a classic, 10/10 would totally buy
