MSFC: The Day The Earth Stood Still (1951)
Praiter Yed replied to customBRICKS's topic in LEGO Sci-Fi
Oh yes! A true classic. The flying saucer is very nicely shaped and I like the tank positioning but shouldn't this be in black and white ? -
Sorry if this has already been mentioned but Disney have postponed the 3D release of Episodes II & III. Personally I'm not bothered by this, I just hope it doesn't mean that episodes IV, V & VI will never receive the 3D treatment. I read somewhere that 20th Century Fox still own some of the rights to Episode IV and that there may have to be some legal wrangling before Disney can do anything with it. I really hope ANH gets a theatrical release in the next few years as I'd love for my Boy's first viewing of Star Wars to be on the big screen, 3D or not.

Absolutely love this! You've captured the retro-sci-fi feel perfectly. I particularly like how you've created the impression of windows using the wedge plates.
-
@Si-MOCs: Since doing this I've looked at some other versions of this scene - there's lots of good ones built in the 'classic' studs up Lego style. Many AFOLS prefer that look, I can honestly say I like both styles, so not better, just different . Images in first post updated.
-
This is brilliant! I must echo other members and say the use of sword/knife handles as people is very ingenious.
-
Thanks Si-MOCs. Oh my, if you ask questions like that people will start to think you are a HUGE sci-fi nerd . But judging by the colour, I'll say it's Europa. Pictures updated but I still need to add daytime shot to show construction.

Can't believe I missed this earlier. Easily recognisable micro scene and the Discovery looks ace

After watching 2001: A Space Odyssey to get reference for my FAP entry, I decided that I just had to give this a try too. I've really rushed it and my camera doesn't seem to be up to the job of taking a decent picture in the dark - but I think the Pod looks OK, and it's all good fun anyway... Sci-Fi Classics on Flickr I'll try to post a picture showing how it actually looks in daylight (very poor) and a reference image before the deadline.

They don't make 'em like they used to! And, thanks. Thanks guys. I really wanted to use as much dark-tan as possible and as I don't own many dark-tan plates, I was forced to SNOT the ground - a bit out of my comfort zone but I think it worked out OK. . Thanks Si-MOCs. I know it's not movie accurate but I really felt it was more dramatic to have the skull smashing monkey ape alone and framed by the monolith. IMO by moving the action to the front of the monolith and not including his 'clan' it's more symbolic of the influence the alien artefact is exerting on his primitive brain... In other words, my Lego collection only includes two monkeys & a CMS chimp and one of them is currently MIA (bloody Kids no doubt!) . The CMF ape guy does work well - but I don't have any of them either

Nice . The Cabin is well done. I'm not sure which monstrosities are represented in "the army of nightmare creatures" section but I do hope that bottom left, second in, is as I suspect, a Merman? This MOC would not be complete without a Merman . I particularly like how you've added a false perspective to the bottom level. Great idea for an entry, good luck.

This is stunning! - I'm reminded of the mechanical King Kong from those old Godzilla movies. In fact, in different colours and without the cock-pit this would make a nice brick-built Kong. Your truck is also well done. Superb

I've used this competition as an excuse to build a vignette from my 'to-do' list - it was either this or an ant sabotaging the innards of a computer (does anyone even remember Phase IV?). Initially I intended using the CMS chimp but it was too small so a monkey had to stand in ... Sci-Fi Classics on Flickr Hopefully I'll get chance to take more/better images before the deadline. C & C welcome but please don't mention that I've used a monkey instead of an ape

Ahh the memories come flooding back. I bought this set from the local toy shop on my way home from school. I was so excited, I rushed home to show my Mum what I'd bought only to get a bollocking for spending all my pocket money! I think it was 80p!!! Thanks for the review and the memories

Thanks for the informative and amusing review Lobot . I picked one of these up a while ago when Sainsburys had 1/3 off, I still haven't built it though and only really bought it for the figure. The minifig is much needed after the lack of a AT-ST pilot in '8038 Battle of Endor' and this fig is an improvement on the one in 7657, with more detailed print and back printing. However, I do feel it's a bit of an unnecessary improvement and would be happy to own/use multiples of both. I paid so little attention to the actual model that I've only just realised, by reading your review, that this AT-ST is actually built differently from the awful 30054. This set looks miles better, but I still feel there's room for improvement, particularly on the weapons and feet. Love that printed cockpit though - there must be other uses for that?

How about just pushing a small antenna up through the hole and possibly securing it on the inside with a technic bush?

I think it's safe to say he's wealthier than me! - I wonder if he'll appear in both the future and past timelines? And if so, will he look any different in each
