42110 - Land Rover Defender
dr_spock replied to 1gor's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Maybe the "coffin" will work with the LEGO HIDDEN SEE app. I think modelling parts breaking and costly to replace is in line with realism of a modern Land Rover. It might be better to lease than buy. At least you won't be stuck with an olive lemon when things start breaking and resale value drops off the cliff. -
Applying good old fashion model railroading kitbashing to LEGO.

If you make your own, don't forget the protection circuitry to keep the LiPO cells from running down too low and overcharging.

I was able to get away with one powered engine on level track after I replaced the two passenger car non-jacob bogies with a jacob bogie and the technic axle bogie on the second engine with the wheels from one of the non-jacob bogie. Basically reducing rolling resistance on the train.

LEGO seems to be using the STM family of microcontrollers in their BT devices. It's the LEGO firmware that makes them passive devices to be commanded by another device. You could write and replace the LEGO firmware with something more intelligent and store programs too in its flash memory. There are SDKs on the STMicroElectronics website.

New forum user - looking to get into MOCs

Welcome to Eurobricks, Steve. You can install EV3DEV on your Mindstorm EV3 if you prefer to use C. https://www.ev3dev.org/ -

I would be more interested in adapting the PU motors to run on continuous power source for my GBCs. As my PF motors burn out, PU motors would be the replacements in the future. On the bright side, those all burnt out PF motors can provide a PF cable to make your own PU-PF adapters. I made a dumb adapter. The PU train/batmobile hub doesn't seem drive the PF XL motor. It worked with the M and PF train motor. I didn't have a L motor avaialble to test.

The LEGO use case is users would connect only the LEGO made devices. The LEGO cables would be wired not to put 9V on the 3.3V I/O ports of the STM microcontroller. The connector is also keyed so that you can't connect them any other way. The risk of wrong wiring is neglible with quality control at the factory. Adding protection circuitry like optoisolators would increase costs and probably not benefit the typical users of the product. I made my PU to PF adapter using different color coded wires from a CAT5 cable so I can see what's connect to what clearly. I think I checked thrice before plugging in once. It was scary. https://youtu.be/SKsLZMqTepo

Thinking about getting into 3d printing lego.
dr_spock replied to Mechbuilds's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Sounds like you're putting a large load on the axles. 3D printed parts may not perform any better for your particular application. Perhaps 3rd party metal axles? A strong plastic is nylon but can be difficult to 3D print. PLA is an easy plastic for beginners to use. It is stiff and doesn't have same flex as ABS. If you like tinkering and troubleshooting, then a kit printer can be fun. -
LEGO has published their protocols which can help to create your own stuff to go beyond the limitations of the LEGO supplied apps. Lots of technical stuff happening over in the train forum like: https://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?/forums/topic/162288-powered-up-a-tear-down/ https://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?/forums/topic/169318-control-all-your-powered-up-power-function-sbrick-devices-with-a-single-software/ https://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?/forums/topic/168975-documenting-the-lego-poweredup-system/

LEGO Education SPIKE Prime
dr_spock replied to Mr Hobbles's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I love BASIC too. If it needs speed, write the those parts in machine language. The rest can be in BASIC. Basically a speed work around. Having a screen is handy. But lacking one, can't you send debug info through the USB port or Bluetooth connection like you can do with a headless PI or arduino or esp8266 hardware project? -

Have LEGO Movies become extended advertisements?

And movie tie-in books too. Right now, I have a decent sized list of Marvel End Game juvenile titles in the monthly sales catalogue. -

Lego Motorized vs Manual
dr_spock replied to jorgeopesi's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Depends on the MOC. Motorized works better for GBCs. Cranking it all day at a public event can wear you out if you didn't train for it. -
What happened with Functions/Play Features?
dr_spock replied to Lego David's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Have you tried Friends sets such as the Go Kart stuff? They may have the functions and play features you seek.
