Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Wodanis replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
I know that when a set retires if vendors have any stock left they will ship it back to Lego (assuming it wasn't a great seller for a particular vendor/shop). That is why you will see a 'retired' set become stocked again at Lego S@H. I was able to get the fire helicopter (60010) from last years line in this way. Selling the set through Lego S@H is the most efficient way of reducing the stock. If that is the case for Town Hall then it should be expected to retire March of 2015 as the end of its three year cycle. Personally I never thought it was a bad seller, or a bad set. I am really happy with mine. Perhaps they just won't be running another batch to produce hence the sold out status? I believe you would be correct Finnbricker. Each building at the base would likely be 13 studs wide with a 6 stud alleyway in-between. I doubt they would go beyond a 32x32 baseplate since that is the standard dimensions for all modular buildings. Perhaps with stairwells going up on each half? Really excited to see what the final product will be. I have yet to buy the Palace Cinema. That is the only modular I'm missing and I hope it doesn't get retired yet. -
I checked out all but your train station design. Yea, there are a lot of bricks/plates I can see aren't available in a particular colour and a few discontinued parts. Of all your designs the two that are the most feasible in the brick is the Posh Cafe and the Bike Shop/Bank. I very much like the design of the bike shops, looks like something out of Florida. (The black Tripartite window is discontinued. May be able to do white or possibly dark bluish grey.) The Cafe largely just needs re-colouring. Most of the parts it uses are available. I also saw how you cheated with the physics somewhat, but that is ok as its a guideline for the finished product. I may utilise either of these two designs for my next building project. At the moment I need $200 worth of more parts to complete my police station modular and I am currently working on an Elite Police HQ too. One that can house the Chase McCain hummer from 60007 and Swat Van from 60008. These vehicles are huge to house!

Loving the cafe and the kiosks. I will have to download these! Excellent work and lots of variety. Have you made any of these in the brick?

Heya Sin, welcome back! Lots of ppl have picked up on this thread! :)

I did CC and GG at the same time. In total I spent $600 roughly doing both. This was a combination of Bricklink and BnP/PAB. It is easier finding the pieces that both sets require and ordering it at once. Focus on the unique parts first.
-
Shhhh it's our best kept secret! Haha just kidding. Bricks and Pieces is the replacement part service for lego sets. When a new set is produced they are package and sent out for distribution. After this initial production run they will start to produce pieces for replacement parts. When a new set is released it can take a month until they will have the replacement parts available. Keep this in mind because when sets become reach end of line they will have the parts for a limited amount of time unless they are used in other sets to keep the pieces in circulation. (Dark blue arch is an example, as it went out of production but thanks to Astrid the designer who put another one in with winter village we have them available again) On average, RogerSmith is right, BnP prices do cost more and there are limits to how much can be ordered but you really can't beat acquiring new parts! I used Bricklink a lot last year and after finding out about BnP I haven't touched the site since. I will have to eventually as I know I still need some elusive parts to complete restoration projects.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Wodanis replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Personally I really liked the town hall. I thought it was well done. Not every modular will please everyone but the Parisan Restaurant offered some cool techniques. I'm excited to see the next one. -
The construction set concepts look great! Can't wait to see the final product release. The swamp police look fun and get to build upon our forest police collections. Not so keen on the starter sets, but the great vehicles will be a must buy. Everyone will want the snow plow for their winter village collections. Just wish I had picked them up...bought the winter carnival set from last year.

I wouldn't say you are expecting too much. I've noticed that with a number of sets starting last year. That is not to say that the models aren't good or detailed however to get to an appropriate price point for production they sacrifice parts. The prisoner transporter 60043 is an example of this. I will have to modify the back compartment with about a dollar more of parts to conceal the unsightly tires poking through. Cutting corners detracts from the overall satisfaction I find. Especially in light of the fact that Lego has been charging more. Personally I would like to see a lower price point for kits coming out. 2012 was a really good year for models that weren't over the top in pricing.

I do agree with you that Lego needs to re-analyze their target audience. The real reason I believe they are seeing a huge rise in profits is from the fact that adults are the ones buying Lego sets. I buy lots of Lego for myself. Kids are their primary audience but they are expanding the types of sets produced such as more UCS sets, etc. I think Lego would benefit from a content change in Lego City sets. I've read some pretty cool ideas that I would like to see. I know it's hard to predict what will sell well and what won't but variety is good. I loved the miners sub theme and the forest police. I think most of us, including MOCers, would like to see a building or two as official sets, preferably without a missing a half. Just wish more of the ideas I read about would be on lego ideas instead of licensed products that I don't care for.

Well done, a very original creation! Maybe lego would consider this as a set?

These stories are just unreal. That is a lot of theft. They must have been returning damaged sets to multiple stores across a wide area. Eventually one would realize that the same person kept coming back with damaged lego sets if he kept returning to the same stores. Lego is big business now

Very much in agreement with my fellow AFOL commentors here. I love how you've done the building and the colour scheme is sharp. Might have to borrow your rotundra idea. Makes for a classic style building. I assume the yellow is from the friends line?

Hey thank you CityBuilder! Here are some of the latest photos of the LDD design. Purchasing parts is halfway complete.

Update 2 I've been rather stuck with the project due to funding being diverted to sales over the summer. I finally purchased the Parisan Restaurant. I was hoping to do more orders but life is also getting in the way. I'm about halfway in terms of parts. This modular is about 2800 parts. Mainly what I need now are plates, tiles and bricks. Most of the specialized pieces have been secured. I decided to switch to white window frames for the upper floors except for the front facade. This saved about $8 by switching colours. Right now I'm playing around with a few design tweaks. Nothing substantial that would affect the overall look. For instance I added a 1x4 window bar to compliment the original ladder to the roof and a new painting for the boss's office. I will post some new images soon. It's a bit frustrating to see my project in ziplock bags and not built yet...but I have about $300 left of parts to purchase. Naturally we have more sets coming out soon and then advant calendars...sigh. I don't even have the exo suit....

Really love your use of the extra handcuffs into architecture. Looks like you had fun with this creation. why are there tiles on the second floor with the gauges?

How did Lego become a gender battleground
Wodanis replied to grum64's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Ever notice it's the feminists who have the problem with gender issues regarding lego toys? I, too, wish people would stop trying to control what children should think. -
Love your work on this. Definelty inspires me to try something similar one day.

Nice to see the results of our previous conversations Brickgrrl. Are the base plates of the modulars locked in? Would be interested in seeing a close up shot of the construction.

I'm Canadian and my first thought was that this had a reference to 9/11...then I saw Superman. I like the building and the details are cool but I agree with Withacee. It's bad taste even though Superman is there.

Don't forget about Ninjas...haha. The police sets sound interesting. They had a police boat in 2010, guess a hovercraft upgrade would be cool. The funding for the police in Lego City must be huge! I would also like to see some pics. I do hope they aren't changing the police uniform again. We just had the Elite Police sets and jumped to the New York style uniform this year. I would expect another great vehicles line up. I thankfully just completed my collection, even managed to score a Fire Boat after it retired at WalMart last week. So no one has any ideas on what the new sub theme for City will be?

Could 2014 Make Lego Fans Bankrupt?
Wodanis replied to BrickBuilder3213's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I definelty am speningd a lot more this year. There have been so many great sets this year that I'm struggling to keep up. I'd like to get back into Star Wars but so far City, Creator, Lego movie and now Ideas has been occupying most of my budget. Don't get me started on the cost of my MOC modular police station which is still in progress. At this rate it will be October before I maybe finish buying the parts. That being said I can't complain. -
You gave me an idea. Neo-Space police and Neo-Blacktron! I would like to see Forestmen, Black falcon and the King's men return with a Lego Castle revival. This time can we have a Lego Castle set that is truly a castle? I would definitely want to see some Classic Space sets return too. Especially Blacktron. That was my favourite sub theme of all time! Space police would be cool as well. However if they were to do a re-release of Blacktron sub theme I loved the first interation not the Blacktron version 2 series. Can't be 'Black'tron with white spacesuits...this time round they could be quite creative with designs I suspect. After the success of Benny's spaceship maybe our wish will come true. The other number one theme I would love to have back is Pirates. I used to look over the layouts photos in the back of the manuals for hours. I agree with some suggestions to see more train packs but there was another thread that was pointing out why they wouldn't produce extra train cars...
