  1. 2019; 50th anniversary of the Apollo moon landing, and 150th of the completion of the American Transcontinental Railroad. Looks like it will be a fun year then!
  2. The funny thing is in the Ekimu review Huw's comment is very complimentary of the review saying it was well done and he is glad some one with Constraction experience is willing to write the reviews since he has an obvious lack of expertise. For all of his strong opinions, he knows very well how to delegate responsibility to those with more expertise. In fact about the only theme he writes reviews of now is City or Creator; other people are tackling the rest. Both TheOneVeryonian and TheBrickPal are helping Bionicle get more reviews, the same way CaptainRex101 has done for Star Wars.
  3. Glad they are having another shot at original films. While some sequels are great (Monsters University, Toy Story 3); too many diminishes the brand in my eye. Some of Pixar's best are standalone films, that give a great story; and I honestly would love more original stories. Especially because the rest of Hollywood can't do anything original these days! :P
  4. I think the opinion of a lot of FOL's has improved a bit over 15 years; but there are still naysayers who dislike the line. I imagine Bionicle is quite strange for the older AFOL's who grew up with Classic Space and Fabuland. The good news is a lot of the original Bionicle community is now becoming adults, and can articulate a response to those criticisms. Sometimes high end MOCs made by Bionicle fans surprise and change the opinions of older AFOLS who only had seen the line as an ugly <insert that tiresome argument> theme. Ultimately though; CCBS has become just as much a part of Lego's brand as has System, Technic, and Duplo. I know the jaded fans might not take the time to realize it, but Lego has spectacular cross compatibility over their brand. My CCBS beam might look strange, but with only one modified 2x2 brick with a ball on it is all it takes for that CCBS brick to link into a System MOC.
  5. Yeah it's the Penny Arcade; goof on my part writing the comment
  6. I wonder if they will flashback to that or not. Seeing how well they skipped the orgin story in Civil War; I kind of don't want to spend time in Homecoming to see the same story I saw with Toby McGuire and Andrew Garfield all over again...
  7. Esmeralda and Shrunken Ned are spot on. I don't recall ever seeing the pirate one though... Those 10¢ animated viewers would be a fun thing to display near Esmeralda. The Nickle Arcade is full of cool machines.
  8. S**t is my grandfather's favorite swear word. It's kind of like a family word for us now. So yes, I have known the word all my life. No surprise Spidey knows it to.
  9. Where did Spidey learn that language? An American High School obviously!
  10. Yes and yes. As an opinion I still hold Lego to be higher quality in set design and plastic quality. While that is my opinion; I will admit my opinion about Megablocks is becoming more open to them. I wouldn't mind getting the Star Trek bridge set to build for display, or even a few Halo sets. And I don't intend to criticize those who buy Megablocks, as I understand the appeal f many of their licenses. With that said my brand loyalty is still foremost to Lego. And with that I will also always speculate "what if Lego had the Halo or Star Trek license?" And set quality; while a $20 Lego set and Megablocks set can often be 'on par' with each other; I have never seen Megablocks attempt anything as bold or classy as Lego's modular buildings, exclusive trains, high end Technic, or other expert level sets. While I admit quality has dropped in many of Lego's licensed themes; their in house high end sets hit home runs all the time. I'd take a Modular Building or a UCS Star Wars ship (note ship, not Hoth disappointmemt
  11. I wanted to build Lola in LDD but didn't finish it. Yours is near perfect! Might have to reverse engineer it and build it in real bricks someday for myself:)
  12. Glad to see that it has been done by someone before. When I thought of the concept, I figured a small branchline or industrial park would be well adapted to Lego, something a lot of you have mentioned. The thought of a Class 1 mainline in Lego would be tricky, the staging alone would be HUGE. As much as I want to get started on that long dreamed HO layout I want to build, I gotta admit someday a L-Gauge layout would also be grand. Although one issue I noticed with operating Lego as the prototype; a lot of you have mentioned the difficulty in teaching kids how to operate. It occurs to me most adult model railroaders who know how to operate an HO layout, might be hard pressed to operate a Lego one! :D
  13. If you have noticed my comments; you can tell that I dabble in both Lego and HO trains, and I have actually been planning for several years ideas to build that big dream HO layout (Lego is a lot more forgiving, it runs on the floor better when I need it to!) With that I have read a TON of model railroading magazines and books, and the one key idea that is always brought it up is prototypical operation. In short for those who don't know the term; prototypical operation is the use of a model train layout to run a railroad as if it was the actual thing; with passenger trains trying to hit a schedule, and freight cars destined to different industries and loading spots. A rather good visual description of a prototype operating session on a few different railroads is shown here: So my question is simple; has anyone done this for Lego? I know Lego isn't quite a 'scale hobby' but some of the MOCs I have seen this community produce are astonishingly prototypical. If a layout was built in the right way with sidings and interesting industries, I think Lego could very easily be used to show prototypical operation of a railroad. And unlike say HO scale; Lego is robust enough we can actually 'play' with it while operating, for example after a car is spotted at an industry track it would be easy to place minifigures nearby to work on unloading it and what not. Or other aspects of operation can occur easily hostling locomotives at a rail shop (most LUG displays I have seen photos of have a locomotive shop, so they seem apt to have a hostler working on it). Any examples of prototype operation in Lego in the community?
  14. Yes a chain like system would make more sense. Still it might be tricky to keep the car on the rails all the time. Real roller coasters normally use a wheel set up that attaches to the rail in three different places, hugging to it it. The Lego train wheels in the Friends coaster only sit on top of the rail, great for trains, not great for a coaster.
  15. Ah the last ones retired? Dang it! Still surprised a few lasted into the 21st century.
  16. Honestly it's been 17 days since I wrote that comment, and I was hoping it wasn't goingto be noticed again... I was a bit to overly sharp in my opinion that day, but decided not to redact it since it was already written. I was just merely trying to express my frustration of "2016 is bad=Nexo Knights" comments that have ruled this topic since it started. Don't take my earlier comments to seriously.
  17. China would be a unique country to railfan; diesels, electrics, and maglevs in the cities; steam in the mining towns!
  18. Reminds me of this old commercial:
  19. Reminds me of Barstow 'Station' a large travel stop in Barstow California with a McDonald in several train cars. Right next to the right of way of the UP and BNSF to.
  20. One of my friends had the Zam and Anakin Speeder chase set when I we were kids. For a set from 2002, it was actually really well done with the shaping. The colors of the two vehicles were awesome to, and are a much needed break from the typical Bley spaceship sets. If we got an updated Speeder chase Anakin and Obi-Wan and Zam would all need to be in it. Maybe a small build of Padme's apartment to so we could get a new Padme, with R2, and a Captain Typho figures.
  21. Yes nothing is set in stone. Just fan rumors based on "how well sets are stocked in my locale" type of stuff. We won't know the theme has kicked the can until it actually does. For all we know Lego is limiting production to keep the theme alive, by limiting it's sales to exclusive stores.
  22. Wow! Great work. The decals are spectacular. If you ever built the steam engine in Lego though, it would be cool to do the decals based on a Lego engine. Just a small idea.
  23. I think a lot of this thread for me when it started was a humorous take on the commentary that Ideas is not very well filtered. Many of us know how hard it is to actually find "the best" sets on Lego Ideas, because all to often "the worst" clutters our searches on the site. With that said, a critique and parody of some of those projects is long due. With that said, there is a point our mockery can go to far. It is true that many poor Ideas are receiving unrealistic encouragement. However it is not our duty as FOLs to purposefully attack those Ideas hoping our negative view will destroy the false confidence. In fact not only could such a critique destroy false confidence, it might damage real confidence in the meantime. The best method to let these creators know they have a poor project is not to vote for it. By releasing it online they should inherently know their project requires votes, and if their project fails to reach even a few hundred supporters it is a way for them to recognize the flawed nature of the project without receiving undue-criticism. Also as this thread has progressed I have learned through the comments that many "bad Ideas" submitters, are "good Ideas" voters. Directly attacking their project might push them away from voting on future projects. I am okay with this thread continuing, but pick which projects to tease carefully. Look for the obvious trolls, or cases of the bizarre. Take care that our jokes of the model are not excessive, and that if we must go over to Ideas and comment on the actual project page; that our comments be constructive, and not destructive.
  24. Another two cents on the new films. I believe they have created new fans but not a new fandom. Before the JJ films hit I had already seen Star Trek: Nemesis with my Dad, Uncle, and Grandfather in theaters, and a few episodes of TNG. So when JJ's film hit it was enough to push to go and watch TNG and watch the old films again. In comparison my mother had never seen a lot of older Trek films. When JJ's films hit she became a fan of them; but that didn't translate to fandom for the whole franchise. She'll watch the new films over and over again, but as soon as I showed her Wrath of Khan (hoping she'd at least catch were Into Darkness got its inspiration) she got bored of Wrath of Khan in 5 minutes. The only old Star Trek film she kind of enjoyed was IV and that's because it was so tonally different than any other one. That's what I mean saying the new films produce new fans, but they don't often go and contribute to the overall Trek fandom.
  25. Yes as cool as Lego Monorail was; the original system didn't look like a Monorail. In my thoughts the Lego Monorail System looked more like a Peoplemover type system than a Monorail system. A true Monorail must rest around the beam; or be suspended from it. I would love for Lego to try a new system for Monorails; but I worry they won't try again for a long time. :(
