The best of the worst Lego Ideas
xboxtravis7992 replied to anothergol's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I honestly didn't know Bluerender existed until a sometime last year. It's not very well advertised, and only well known in the Eurobricks community. -
Please please use narrow gauge rails aplenty. I'd buy a set for those in a heartbeat!

Harry Potter: Cursed Child Discussion
xboxtravis7992 replied to xboxtravis7992's topic in Culture & Multimedia
Honestly I will let you decide when you read it. It was a fun two hour read to return to Harry Potter land, but it lacked the gravitas of the original seven books. Everything goes to crap pretty fast in Cursed Child and then resolves in a nice little bow just as quickly. -
Hello I just speed read the book in two hours last night and I was wondering if anyone else here has read it (or even seen the play?). I noticed there really wasn't a discussion for it so I figured I might as well start one. Please remember to use Spoiler tags where appropriate.

Yes I am not super impressed. I do feel the mini-toys in the build are far more impressive than the train itself. The small size of the train is lending itself more to the Winter Village scale, but even next to the Lone Ranger Constitution the Winter Train will look awfully small. I think I will still get it to continue my Exclusive Trains collection, but it definitely lacks in many regards. With that said the comments on the Brickset article are very positive responses. I figure that's proof that the reason Rail-FOLs hate the set is oblivious to most FOLs who seem to like how it looks. If the general audience feels that way to then Lego might have a hit on their hands.

Yes VBBN, please do a faux-review of this set and a Shapeways mask! That would be a fitting 'farewell' to G2. I hope to someday be able to spend the money to Bricklink this model. It will make G2 feel more complete to display Makuta as though he were an official set.

Yes I wish I had the budget for Armada or X-Wing. Besides the Star Wars Tabletop games I'd love to also try Halo Feel Battles. Sadly the money I could spend on tabletop games is going into Lego! :P

Problems/Improvements to Bionicle G2
xboxtravis7992 replied to MakutaDreadscythe's topic in LEGO Action Figures
Yeah the grumpy old man vibe was pretty fun. What killed Ekimu in my opinion was the rush job for the last episode. I think his 'character' was one of my favorites in G2... until I realized his "powered up form" was a wasted plot device allowing him to follow the Toa to the final battle then sit on the sidelines blabbering about the prophecy he wasn't allowed to tell them about. Not so much he was a bad character, but more that he had some horrible expositional dialogue the cancellation of Bionicle forced him to give! -
It's a pity Lego Trains isn't it's own dedicated theme anymore. The '90s brought many great sets for trains but the building techniques in a lot of them haven't aged well. The last three Creator Expert Trains, the Emerald Night, The Maersk Train, and The Horizon Express; where all great with wonderful build techniques(and in the EN's case the introduction of new parts) but the sporadic releases meant it wasn't a real train theme. I think this Winter Train would have been better received where it not the only train this year.

Although Nickon's tone of voice is a bit more negative than my thoughts are, I agree with most of what he said. Something about G2 failed bad, either marketing or the toy just didn't resonate with kids anymore. There are a few things I didn't agree with but not a lot. I do agree the sour attitude of the community was really bad the last few months. While I think many of us saw the writing on the wall saying the theme was doing badly some way or another, the fans who crammed that into other's throats and were happy when G2 ended have been annoying to say the least. Also the fans who viewed G1 as sacred and infallible, with G2 being a sin; where ludicrous. With that said, I have come to the desicion G2 gave us far better 'canister' sets than G1 did. I wish G2 lasted a little longer to allow us to get a proper Titan or Vehicle set, but alas I will leave it to the community to work that out. If I ever master the Technic system, I hope to someday build some cool Toa vehicles!

That explains why Brickset hasn't reported on it yet... Maybe official pictures might give me a new perspective on the set.

The colors of the set are a bit garish even for a CP engine, but to be honest the C.P. Huntington is the only engine I have seen in real life with two driving wheels. If I get the set I might just mod the locomotive to be like that then.

Maybe I'm to much of a foamer... When I see the WV buildings I think "quaint, cute, etc." When I see the WV train I think, "unauthentic, toy like, horrible power to weight ratio with one driving axle, why don't the cars ride on proper trucks?, can someone even get into the cupola of the caboose, why does an American style train still use the same old Lego buffers??" I might be a bit picky but that is the side affect of sitting line-side and watching the real thing all to often. Of course I try and remind myself it is just a toy, but the more I see the real things in action the more often I feel an urge to push for "realism" either through MOCs that meet my standards, or traditional rail modeling in HO scale. So maybe the set is just fine, I'm just the screwed up one! :D

Yeah I know 4-2-0 engines exsist, I'm just not a particular fan of the way the look. Besides I am more of an 8-driving axle guy, 2-8-0, 2-8-2, 4-8-4, 4-8-8-4... Sadly I doubt Lego will ever make an official train like that since the mold casts three wheels at once. Also I know it's a Creator Expert model; but sadly it doesn't measure up to the last three D2C trains in my opinion. Who am I kidding though, I am probably still getting it.

Best years of Lego sets Discussion
xboxtravis7992 replied to LegoRomania's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Oh gosh I could list every year as a favorite Lego year. Here is my synopsis though of favorites: 2000-2001: First start getting Lego Star Wars, Harry Potter, and Bionicle sets as a kid 2004: Great year for Bionicle, lots of fun times 2007: Just when Bionicle and Star Wars where getting a little stale, Lego introduced the Café Corner which kept me as a FOL during all of my teenage years. 2009: Some great Star Wars stuff and more modular buildings, but the real knockout punch for me that year was the Emerald Night formally introducing me to Lego Trains. 2012: The Haunted House and the Town Hall in the same year drool! Plus we got to see updates of some classic Star Wars ships such as the Tie Fighter and Y Wing 2015: The Force Awakens wave was fun, and my childhood favorite Bionicle was back. 2016: SO MANY GORGEOUS D2C SETS. I know Hoth sucked, and I am a tad disappointed by the Winter Train now that it has photos online. But the Porsche, the Bucket Loader, Big Ben, Brick Bank, and ESPECIALLY the Disney Castle have all caught my eye. Wish I had money to buy them all! -
A 4-2-0??? What the...

I am not surprised that the train will probably be like the Toy Story and Lone Ranger trains; but I was hoping to see a bit more "beefy" US steam power dressed for the holiday. A nice 4-6-2 like a SOU engine would be a great Christmas engine with enough prototype accuracy for Train Fans. The inclusion of track leads me to believe though it will skew to the "toy look" and less to the fidelity of the three Creator Expert Trains. Still, I'm excited to see it.

Ekimu - Toa of Creation - MOD 71312
xboxtravis7992 replied to Murdoch17's topic in LEGO Action Figures
Introducing the golden armor from the Stars set was pretty creative and blends well with the CCBS style. I'd recommend looking at the gearbox designs from 71312 and modifying them to fit into your MOC. Sadly LDD doesn't yet have the new gearbox so it might require some experiments in physical brick to best incorporate it. I definitely understand the trans-blue on Ekimu is a bit overwhelming. The gold suits him well, although I love the look of the Mask of Creation in both Gold or trans-blue! It's just such a beautiful mask. -
Wow! Great use of the figure. I was thinking it was only a matter of time until someone made the Dragon as a MOC like this.

Problems/Improvements to Bionicle G2
xboxtravis7992 replied to MakutaDreadscythe's topic in LEGO Action Figures
Strange seeing how Lego was the biggest brand and Toy line for a time in 2014 around the time The Lego Movie happened. Strange, but not unlikely... Many business suffer mini-recesscions within their company shortly after moments of great success. For example after the smash release of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," the Walt Disney Company went into a period where they used their new found money to stretch their resources thin, soon ending the corporation in the red. It wasn't until Disneyland opened nearly a decade and a half later that the corporation went into the black again Same thing is happening currently to the American Railroad industry. 2014 was a peak year in profits and tonnage hauled. It set the record for the busiest time in railroad history since the 1940's! Then in 2015 the coal industry quickly collapsed, and with it so did the rail industry. Now the industry is seeking to cut losses and recover. Perhaps the same is happening behind the scenes at Lego. After a boom in success, Lego is now losing its popularity. To cut costs, Lego is nixing lower priority themes. In this scenario, Bionicle would obviously be one of the first products to be cut to save money for the rest of Lego. Possibilities!
