Book II - Nocturnus: Guild sign-up and Discussion
robuko replied to ZCerberus's topic in Guilds of Historica
Welcome Lord Mortis. Brilliant build and introductory story! -
I know people who build in each style. Personally, I start with an idea then throw some parts together and see how the idea evolves as I go along. I usually start with some particular details that I want to include, and then I shift them around in relation to each other until I'm happy with it, and then shoehorn the basic framework in. But I do keep bricks sorted by type and size.

I loved Pete's original, I like what Mark has done with it, and the whole team behind the reveal has done an incredible job. Best launch ever. I wonder why it uses the large ball joints instead of the new ones- for strength? And green CS figs. Win!!
-
That is the best tent I have ever seen! Awesome build Combee, I love the rock and the feeding scene is superb. Have you thought of joining Guilds of Historical? This would be perfect for Nocturnus.

Absolutely beautiful. The colour palette and detailing are wonderful. I really like the door hinges, and my favourite detail is the NPU green feathers for salad! I would love to see you in GoH too, I think you would enjoy it. No, you don't have to do any tasks, you can help your chosen guild with fabulous "free build" MOCs like this.

Thanks for your advice Gideon. I am using my cellphone camera. I do have photo shop so I will have a play around on the noise levels, it is something I have never tried yet.

My (UK) S@H orders never ever work. It simply won't process my orders. So I opened a new account and signed up for VIP a while ago and guess what, that doesn't work either, no spaceman in the basket. So lame. I really wanted frax and the spaceman but I guess it will be eBay.

Fantastic parts combinations all round, I love the jaw line especially. Great idea and lovely build.

Very cool challenge. Too many ideas, too little time and space! Sounds like we can build in any area of historica. I have some good ideas for Nocturnus as well as Kaliphlin.

Kaliphlin Community Build- Sultan's Gate

Very nicely done sir. The walls and goals look fantastic. For me the highlight is the crowd, they are hilarious. The Kali team of Vinnie Jones, Dragonball Z and Vincent Crabb look ready to take down the tight-wearers. The very overthrown pitch seems favourable to our guys too.

This is really great! I wanted to see more of that grey building but now I am even more impressed by the outer walls. The integration of the big tree is very impressive. I really like your wooden details on the walls and the tree house.

This is one amazing story. It is so fascinating that I read to the end and then realized I hadn't looked at the MOC! Reminds me of the great SoT. It is a very sweet build, very confident and composed, not flashy but beautifully executed. Oddly makes me think about a Spaceship hangar deck!

Very very nice. I love the stylised proportions. The rock base is remarkable too and the trees are really well built. Great texturing all round. What a fantastic introduction!

Robuko of Kaliphlin votes Nocturnus. I trend to prioritise creativity, innovation, style and presentation, which naturally biases me towards a guild like Nocturnus. I thought there were excellent entries on both sides, notably Gilbert, Emma, Hammerhand and Mass editor who all posted brilliant and large ships, so it was a tough choice. Hammerhand, did you post your finalised version?
-
Thanks mrcp6d. This is all I know about mediaeval plague so I thought there would be more builds on this motif! The curvature is a bit lazy to be honest, I wanted an effect similar to what Gilbert did, but without putting in the work, I don't think it was that successful. Thanks Garmadon, as you know free thinkers are welcome in Kaliphlin, even lunatics who think that rats are connected to the plagues. I would have done the whole thing as a round wall but I don't have many grey cylinders. Thanks Carson, this was just a quick sketch. I was trying to suggest the gate is improvised from the ruins of something much grander but I dont know that it really worked. Thanks Hammerhand! I'm glad you like it! Thanks Lord Vladivus! Thanks Torgar, the 16x16 actually gives a lot of space for a T shaped facade. I'm pleased that you like it. Thanks Scaevola. I found some brown mice the other day and I really wanted to use them because they would give a better contrast, but they seem to have run away or been eaten by the cats. Thanks Kayne, it's a bit of a boiler plate build to be honest as I had only a few hours to do it, hence its conventionality. And I thought this type of restrained build would fit in nicely in Avalonia. I have to say, that Baxter head is just the best! Definitely my next sigfig or a major character. Otherwise he'll come round to your house and play the bagpipes! Thanks Gabe, I felt it was an obvious choice for the category. Definitely I'm channelling dG and CBB in this at lower intensity than they deliver, what made you think of kabel though? I'm very flattered to be compared, but I don't see it myself at the moment. Thanks de Gothia, I felt I owed it to avalonia to try to match the local styles. I'm glad you like it! Thanks Gunman, the funny thing is, he's only playing the bagpipes because I lost my flute! I was originally planning a straight pied piper story. Good news is, I've found the flute now

Very atmospheric and the presentation is great. The scene is quite life-like because of the vegetation and colour. That horse is beautiful, what set is it in?

Ch II: DG Collab: Forest Refuge of the Order of Eden
robuko replied to robuko's topic in Guilds of Historica
Thanks Mike! Half way through the base I realised that what I really wanted was an Ent, but I wanted it to have a less overly benign look than the LoTR style. Really glad you like it dG! That roof was very hard until I discovered the echoic pin with ball stop solution. Yes, almost alive.... I'm sure that if something like that tree felt threatened, it would retaliate...... Thanks very much mrcp6d! I have been thinking about tree bark for a while, the best solution for texture seems to be to put small details on top of frames made of bigger parts. DC does this very well, I'm really pleased that you like it Legopard. Always try new stuff! The dragon horns are Spinlyn's legs so there is a bit of spider there too. Thanks Isaac. I guess you can't see from the photos, the hut is like a hollow wigwam made of technic frame, and the tree sits on top. I'm really happy with that solution because you can have more useful volume in the build. The slightly over saturated flowers are my tribute to CBB. Thanks Bregir, yes the Ent has a kind of ambiguous power to it, it's providing the healing and life to the refuge but it's a bit scary too and you wouldn't want to meet it on a dark night. I didn't really do that consciously, but I think that subconsciously this is how Europeans feel about forests. Thanks Simon! I ran out of time/ideas as to how to stick the Rancor jaw on there too Thanks Torgar, I was pretty happy with the texture in the end. I wish there would be dark green or olive droid arms to make the connection more like ivy or a vine. Thanks Gunman, yeah I love those Simpson sunflowers! Glad you like it! Thanks MKJoshA, it's always interesting to think laterally about what parts to use. In this case it was actually pretty easy because the colour had to match. So happy that you like it. Thanks Gideon! It was a bit of a challenge to fit the roof around the Rancor hand but I thought this is exactly what an opportunistic elf would have tried. I think it was worth the effort.- 30 replies

Absolutely awesome. What a great write up and doesn't it look fantastic! The only thing I would suggest is to add a line or two so you can use the full dramatic majesty of Kayne's build.

+1 both claims. Nice idea and I like the well and chimney. My only feedback is on colour consistency. I read the Brown columns as wood frame and I think it would look better with brown horizontal frames too where you have black. I would also swap out the grey cylinders for Brown. Otherwise the colors are very striking and look great.

Ch II: Team Simon: Cat B: Dunholt Tower
robuko replied to Lord Vladivus's topic in Guilds of Historica
This is s very nice build LV. The colour blocking is very nicely done both on the stone and plaster areas (yes I see the influence there too kabel!). The landscaping and overall composition are good but I agree with previous comments on the architecture, though it is nicely realized. -

Book II Challenge II - Avalonian Civil War! - RESULTS POSTED
robuko replied to Rogue Angel's topic in Guilds of Historica
I'm not really into a war with anyone, before this idea gets more momentum. Although both guilds are powerhouses, I think there are quite a lot more members in Mitgardia, and more of the Mitgardia members seem to be young guys with no children whi have more free time to build. I think Kali would just get swarmed. Mitgardia vs everyone would be more finely balanced. -
8880 is the best supercar. I was given a lovely one for Christmas a few years ago and it's a really great set. On mine the suspension pushes the frame apart though, which disrupts the rear steering, it would definitely be tighter if it was studless. What is it about the aesthetic that you don't like? I think it looks great, very much like a bertone design.
