Hi all, i have moded the Mobile crane 8421 so the slewing is now driven by gears. On the one hand it works actually ok but on the other hand i discover that the upperstructure of such a big crane is quite heavy so this slewing drivetrain is obviously under stress. I have tried to keep it simple and i have also tried to brace all axles and gears as good as possible (e.g. the grey axle above the worm gear is only for bracing/bearing the 8 teeth gear at the right end (otherwise also a axlepin without friction could be used but i thought this could be weak).... but i'm not a pro... so the question / plea is: Could you please take a look at the following picture which shows all this stuff: The red line shows the drivetrain for slewing; at the worm gear a double beared vertical axle goes to the large technic turntable which drives the upperstructucture via the inner ring. left bottom in the picture you see the zoom for the lower bearing ... left top you see the upperstructure from underneth, how the vertical axle is mounted there and how it is braced. so: Is this drivetrain well braced or with other words: where do you see weak points? In general now i have a suspicion: TLG doesn't drive slewing by gear trains because the upperstructures of their big mobild cranes are simply to heavy so the slewing can not being guaranted save without cracking gears or at least this needs too much effort in construction/design... Am i right, what do you think? The small mobile crane 8431 is an exception because its upperstructure is way lighter than 8421 or 42009.... Thanks a lot!

me too - only 100% pure Lego... concerning Jennifers crane: It is somehow outdated - in the meanwhile there are some mobile cranes at least at the same quality level but with 100% pure lego - just scoll some posts above and you will find one ;-) -
Hi all, i have one simple question about the saveness of the following construction (just a "hacked" prototype to demonstrate my question): please have a look at the green marked area where the worm-axle B crosses the axle A: My goal is that both axles can absolute independendly rotate without influencing each other - my visual inspection during manually rotating both axles says, all is ok, even if the distance between the wormgear and the axle a is very very narrow in the green "contact-point", but as far as i can see there is some "air"... so my question to the experts: Am i right? Can i savely use such a construction? Thanks a lot!

well, this bold marked phrase is the problem i see...for the rest i fully agree - AFAIS Grazis Tow truck as well as Sariels, Jennifers excavator, the supersize mini supercars, barmans V8 - all of them are not introduced by the designers theirself but brought to discussiob by impressed users, members... but IMHO our HoF will not be a HoF when some of this benchmarking models are not contained... just my 2ct well - one question: Is it necessary that the first post of the thread broaches the MOC or is it possible linking to a thread where the proposed MOC is mentioned in one of the following posts (e.g. for Grazis Tow truck there is no dedicated thread which start with this model but a thread with topic "5571 Black cat" has been changed to a discussion about the Grazi tow truck: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=25600entry463621) Does this satisfy your new rule? -

well, this new rule eliminates quite all of my suggestions ;-) IMHO with this rule we loose a lot of really outstanding MOCs in the HoF, but well, your decision, it's fine for me... -

Well, here comes my shootout: (first of all sorry for this big image but if i downscale it then i think it becomes unreadable) I have tried to explain the sheet as well as possible. But maybe some remarks on top: There are the following criteria: Innovation Building experiance: at the end lego stands for building, so this is very important (at least for me) Features: A simple feature list - this is divided into subcriterias - but only an overall value is integrated into the end result Feature performance: More important than the simple list is: HOW they perform, i.e. how well is a feature designed/build, how strong is a feature: lets have a look at an example: the quality of the gearbox feature depends on its smoothness when switching, suitable ratios, #speeds, maybe sequential switched etc. and a high quality fake engine is not only a simple V8 (this is poor standard) but has also a fan or more cylinders - this criterium is also divided into subcriterias - but only an overall value is integrated into the end result Playability: Lego is a toy so a supercar should be well playable Design: How good looks the car? Remote Control: Today this getting more and more imporant Iconic: Is the car an icon or can it become one in the future? Well, now these crtiteria are not all equal important, therefore i have introduced a weight, a factor (blue column D): I have tried to weight the criterials senseful: Most important are the features of a supercar and how well they perform: Therefore they should be count most. But beware, do not compare the overall factor in column D of the features with the much higher factors of other criterias like Innovation ... this comes because the featurelist is divided in single features and each has its own factors: if a supercar has quite all features and all perform very well then this counts almost as much as a fully innovative car with a very interesting build. At the end we must judge. This is done in the columns named 'Rating' for each car. Possible values are: 0 = n.a., 1 = lousy, 2 = good, 3 = very good, 4 = oustanding. But oustanding must be somethinf really special! .5-values are also possible. Rating-value and factor are multiplied and give the criterium-result. All criteria-results are summed to an overall rating in the last row (row 39). But only bold marked criteria-results count into the overall-sum! Now Have a look at the fictive reference car (grey): A car which has quite all features possible and all are very well designed and perform very well, which is innovative wither in parts or mechanisms (or both), which is well playable and well designed and is RC with steering and propulsion and has at least the chance to become an icon, this car is my fictive reference car. I have judged all ratings of the reference car with 3 (= very good). So a car with some outstanding rating can be overall better than the reference car. well, what is my result? See above. My calculated winner is the 8880 - This proves my gut feeling ... nicjasno and CP5670 have this already expressed very well - s.a. One remark to the fifth competitor 8466 MOD - i have included it because i think the out of the box quite lousy 8466 can be improved very well with very little effort and has also a very nice preparation for a cute pneumatic extension in its rear (see here: http://www.eurobrick...c=83136&hl=8466) Just my 2ct P.S. I have uploaded my excel-sheet to brickshelf: http://www.brickshel...r-shootout.xlsx So you can play around with your own ratings if you like. This sheet contains also ratings for some other MOC supercars, e.g. Vampire GT, Concept Car and the Shelby GT 500 of Sheepo... ;-)

A good parts pack for PF and some other stuff... maybe i will buy someone in the future when it come back used to the market for max 100€ ... then this will be a good deal for the parts... apart from that this is a boring and bad designed model - bad in the looks (except the back and the bucket) and from the functions, especially the crappy servo-driven steering... last years 42009 mobile crane has its flaws but a) the predecessor 8421 was really really long OOP b) it is at least well designed and does what it should do - though a little bit slow - and it looks very good the new flagship fails in both aspects - the predecessor 8265 is just some years old and it looks much better Very disappointed from the year 2014... the only ray of hope could be the plane 42025 ...

Nico71's Creations
Kumbbl replied to nico71's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
just one word: awesome technic marvel - cudos to Nico71 and many thanks to Blakbird for this very helpful insight... A must build for me -
100% agree - but can it be that a company like Lego demonstrates on one of the most important toy fairs of the world such a bumbling (in certain aspects) designed and clumsy performing top model which looks and performs like an early prototype (in certain aspects)? Can't believe this... well, saves me some money passing on this loader... for this money i can buy all missings parts for some outstanding MOCs out there...

PDF would be great! -
Blakbird, i agree almost at 100% but i don't think TLG markets these technic flagships for Even younger kids.. The portfolio of lego has for every age a certain theme/topic/segment, fir the younger there is chima, Star wars, smaller technic etc. But the technic flagships are meant for kids 9 and above... So there is no Need for oversimplification... As an AFOL i agree almost but why not facing critics for something really bad designed ? AND: not every kid has the skills and the Money to redesign such a design flaw...you and other AFOLs are not the main target group ;-)
-
Do not underestimate kids... This Model is not Lego duplo and it is Not meant for 3 to 6 year old babies/kids. It is meant for older kids around 9 and above and these Kids would have much more Fun with a smooth LA steering than with this woobling jerky crappy binary servo steering, period.I know many of these kids (incl. mine) and i see them playing and what makes Fun and what not... Such a kid needs max. 10 min to learn how to drive a LA steered loader but with this servo steering there is nothing to learn it just don't work...
-
Of course... It would only Not reactive enough if you Need return to center but as explained already above for a heavy and very slow front loader RTC is Useless and nonsense, even for kids... Therefore LAs would be much better solution than this jerky servo steering... Dude ;-) In Addition this is not a simple car but you need different degrees of steering... How to do this with the servo+standard PF-controller!?
-
Ah, i thought you mean 'fixed by TLG'... Of course this loader can be redesigned by a good builder but nevertheless this remains a disappointing flagship ... Anyway: if i would be interested in another front loader then i would build effermans, ist Looks and works well... But actually i needn't any further front loader after building D3Ks one, the swingloader which brings sonething new to the party... In contrary to this new 42030 regardless if ultimate or not ;-)
