[HELP] Recentering Servo
brunojj1 replied to AkiyamaWataru's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Did you test the servo without any load? If it occurs only under load - there could be too much load / too much resistance or e.g. a beam "hooks in" somewhere so that it can´t get back to center. Another simple guess: a damaged cable which sometimes works and sometimes not (and drives you crazy ). If not, a phone call to the customer service is worth a try. -
Great review! Thanks for the introduction into history, I actually didn´t know that BWEs were used first in Germany. There is a discussion going on for more than half a century about how inefficient and harmful for the environment lignite mining is. Indeed it´s a branch which is still kept alive artificially in Germany, but maybe that´s the reason why a big cost effective efficient machine is needed. Such set is very educational and a great parts pack, probably with the best price/part ratio. I saw it recently in a store and just was curious how much it would weigh – the box is so big and feels really full and heavy! Although I won´t buy it very soon because I´ve almost run into bankruptcy with 42056, I appreciate that TLG is never running out of new big ideas for Technic!

[PORSCHE] Porsche 919 Hybrid
brunojj1 replied to Charbel's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Not only the model is of extra quality that I´m wondering why you were punished so hard not to qualify into top 10 in the contest, IMO this is at least within top 5! Your instructions are lovely and would easily sell 15€ each. I really appreciate such photo sequence style instructions coming out in the last time from such talented builders, so I want to consider it for my future MOCs as well. Thanks for sharing!- 69 replies

[HELP] MOC Ferrari GTO 250
brunojj1 replied to mzzl88's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
It seems you know what you´re doing and don´t waste time and parts ! I like the unconventional but realistic rear axle, even it´s not rigid at this stage. Stiffness can always be added later by horizontal beams underneath or above. 1 shock absorber per side can be sufficient even for a bigger car (e.g. compared to Nick Barett´s heavy studded 250 GTO version!), it depends on the incline degree, parallelity and travel distance. Now after your decision about going bigger - which wheels will you put on? Do you maybe think it would be better move the engine a bit backwards / transmission forwards? Or did you place the gearbox already where the gear lever is supposed to be? Using U-joints sometimes is not the ideal way to overcome inconvenient distances e.g. transfer by 1 “floor” up or down (friction, backlash, cracking parts), rather use T8 gears or a simpler odd 1 – 3 – 5 - … floor scheme for input/output connections. Of course at the rear axle you have to use at least one (if not the ball rack #92910/92911). -
You´re not the only "crazy" one ... 1) I know somebody who buys 3 of each bigger set ... 2) Kids can become AFOLs some day and restart playing - means assemble and disassemble for me too. Somebody raised a rethorically paradox question (there is no such thing as stupid questions) and it´s up to everybody to interpret it your way

[HELP] MOC Ferrari GTO 250
brunojj1 replied to mzzl88's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Always good to have enough red parts, especially all sorts of panels, of which diversity is the best in this color. Shaping the 250 GTO´s body will be a really ambitious, tough challenge indeed, even more if you decided to go “gapless” instead of flex axle frames. Nothing is impossible – e.g. look at Madoca´s Corvette Stingray! Don´t overload your mind with the bodywork, first you´ll need some discipline for the chassis which is the true functional “Technic” core of the final result. The right scaling (not 1/10,5 or 1/11) is crucial for the final look. The old long suspension arms from the Enzo will add unnecessarily to the total width of the car. Like Mindgarage said, the usual width about 25 studs with “normal” steering arms #57515 is too much for most 1/10 scaled replicas. Crowkillers has made a floating axle 23 studs wide, maybe it can be suitable for your purpose: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=92099&st=125#entry2347452 You should start with axles, then put the gearbox on priority and design everything else around it. Try to build it as compact and as low as you can, keep in mind to reserve the right height for the piston engine and enough space for the passengers ;-). Get inspired by others, but don´t copy them because it´s Your dream car! Have fun! -
[HELP] MOC Ferrari GTO 250
brunojj1 replied to mzzl88's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
You´re welcome, can´t wait to see it ! What are you struggling with? What parts stock do you own / do you have to rip apart your other Ferraris? Is it a pure manual chassis or do you plan to put in some RC / PF? Gearbox? Do you want to use the Fiorano wheelcaps or consider 3d party covers? Did you scale the model already, at least its wheelbase? All depends on your experience and how your ambitions are. If you want to do a manual car, look at Lipko´s various chassis. If you prefer to do something remote, check out Madoca´s latest creations. EDIT: Sorry, it has a front motor, so you will have to check out some more examples out there - Crowkillers e.g. ... Who is talking about selling instructions? Is it true they will sue him? Please tell something from your vast experience regarding Ferrari license issues! Examples from court apreciated. And how can I get a "proper" licence? -

Everything big has small beginnings - looks very cute at the moment, but sure in the end it will look different than this ! Are you planning to "enlighten" again some or all of the cabins / decks / engine(!)? -
If you're referring to my comment, it wasn't meant in any negative way. Who had a problem with that if/if not? Maybe only the guy who asked for discount, how can he understand.. I would never complain about Blakbird because he has helped me a lot. I can only say from my experience that all participants such as designer, plan builder, website operator earn and have to earn something from sales, it's only fair. He doesn't charge for his awesome renders as far as I know, thanks a lot to him!

Being a very frequent blogger here, maybe Ingmar Spijkhoven will answer your questions the best way. He is the guy who sells the most instructions at www.mocplans.com , the most known website providing such kind of portfolio (the site is still very poor IMO). I don´t know if he is professional, but strongly guess he´s not. You won´t get much motivation from "average builders" who will bomb your email account with "instruktions plz!!", willing to pay a 1.000 EUR on parts, but no way they will afford 15-20 bucks for instructions! Then among some other group of people you are already guilty only because asking money - isn´it a hobby? Such kind of mentality will challenge your motivation about asking money for offering a piece of your intellectual property, not to mention countless hours of work which have nothing to do with having fun. Also the market isn´t as promising as it seems to be for various reasons mentioned before, but who knows where it goes in the next 10 years. It needs a lot of pioneer work from people like you, good networking, better distribution platforms and service for sellers and working protection from piracy - alltogether. If you are thinking about making your living from this business and lift it to the next level - keep the creative spirit and try it! Good luck!

[MOC] Aston Martin DB11
brunojj1 replied to Jeroen Ottens's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
PF are already in the plans anyway, at least LEDs, so you'd have to put in a battery - why not add a small motor and fill out some emptiness? On the other hand a manual AND multifunctional car shouldn't exclude each other, I won't miss PF if other functions instead. -
No useless bashing at TLG and no ignorant praising like in the Top Gear article here at the expert forum, I´d like rather try to find a realistic perspective. The myth of secrecy is being blown away and that´s a good thing. This superficial TG article (the writer can´t be a Lego nerd) delivers very deep and interesting insights in the design process. Now it´s more understandable why and how the stepchild of such marriage has become what it is. Also it becomes clear how a modern day premium product can generate incredibly high sales numbers – stick together the names of 2 megabrands and create a big hype around it, no matter what´s inside. When I was a student 15 years ago, I´ve learned in economic class in an example that it can be part of the marketing strategy (not philosophy!) if the Porsche factory sometimes releases a certain number of cars with e.g. flawed engines inside in times of supply bottlenecks – later guarantee issues with customers taken into account…

You might be kidding ? I´m sure your heart will win over your thoughts! I didn´t either take part because I couldn´t (still can´t) figure out what this contest is all about. And because there are other dream car manufacturers that make my heart beat faster. The “ultimate dream Porsche” already has been made by TLG – it´s a 911 – surprise, surprise! Is it about to build a "eierlegende Wollmilchsau" (a pig that gives milk, wool and lays eggs; translation not possible)? True Porsche enthusiasts (I´m not) are saying: A Porsche 914 is not a Porsche. The 924 is not a Porsche. A Panamera is not a Porsche. A Cayenne is not a Porsche, it´s a VW Tuareg - the chassis is the same after all. The Porsche design itself is particularly bound to the characteristics of the 911 such as body shape, engine efficiency and speed performance – that´s my “understanding”. What can a Porsche designer do to impress the audience? Nothing, just hide modern high-tech under a bodywork which will look almost the same through centuries. Maybe not a futuristic flying one or a war machine on balloon tires with Porsche emblem (Sariel should have entered with a "historic" WW2 Porsche Tiger though )...
-
Really good model ! The shapes are quite blocky and probably too many straight lines for a Porsche. The idea with the solar panel is great and unique in the contest, so it would deserve a higher ranking. If you only would have made a detailed description how you made it work / connected it to PF (??)....

That´t the right approach with the right competitive spirit ! If I can´t win - I`m either not taking part at all or accept the decision and try do better next time. Let´s always try to derive something positive for ourself - the experience, exchange with others and encouragement of each other to not give away our dreams and visions to be fullfilled by our own beautiful minds and ugly hands !

Such great pieces of art ! The "Rothmanns" Porsche on the left should have won the "digital" category! The red car indeed should compete in a separate Ferrari competition . I have no doubts about the functions "working" because everything else is designed so well . Do you have any plans to build them in real? Or any chance you would share some deeper insights / files?
-
My conclusion „functions above looks“ may not be correct in general, but was made regarding digital entries which did not qualify for next round because of their functions which were claimed to be „working“ and none of the judges can prove it. Example: Most inspired details and functions on the model (25%) real model X: 8/10; digital model Y: 0/10 (can´t be proven) Overall coolness and originality (25%) real: 4/10; digital: 10/10 Summ up: real: 12 points; digital 10 points. Winner: real model. My opinion about your 914.5 SpyTarg: your MOC doesn´t have more functions than any others, maybe you should take a second look at some others. “Understanding of the Porsche brand design and competition theme” can be found nowhere in the rough and squarish shapes of your car. Putting 2 different wheel caps / designs on one side of the car isn´t amazing at all, same for the headlights. Anyway – many other people and I appreciated your contribution to the contest. You´re a winner if you have learned something!
-
Point taken , move on! It just won´t affect the judges in any way and I think nobody of them would be really willing to discuss a lot, especially with contestants. By the way I somehow expected you to enter with a multifunctionnal Ultimate 42056 ?.. If you couldn´t finish it in time, I can understand of course... That would be another criterion which could be seen as critical is entering with an "older" model or not-built-for-the-contest e.g. the 962 C hasn´t been built primarily for the contest in such short time (at least as I suppose) but "occasionally" could win the contest because of no restrictions (sure he would deserve it! ).

Best review ever about the best Technic set ever ! Good portion of lecture for Sunday instead of newspaper / coffee table book . My kids and me will have a blast while building and playing it soon!
-
Let us not wanna be judges over the judges. Jim was only one of them and I´m sure he has done justice to all contestants regarding the rules and regardless of EB membership or other preferences. If they decided to favor real models above digital entries, their arguments are plausible. Because Functions were a main criterion above looks – it´s a Technic contest after all and that´s it. Some of the digitals are true pieces of art though and it would be great to see them built in real, with all the functions working of course! I personally wouldn´t mind if non-existing parts or panels in such colors would have to be painted, if clearly indicated in the description.
