has anyone thought of the work it takes to part out a set, sort the parts, and put them back in their parts supply? I find it hard to believe that TLG does this with whatever did not sell. Not impossible, but simply hard to believe as not economically justifiable.

Nico71's Creations
DrJB replied to nico71's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Very nicely done. Two questions though: 1. Can it be made wider or are there some 'limitations'. 2. Can the inter-weaving be something special (more elaborate) as in jacquard pattern (pied-de-poule). In 2, the threads are not 1-up/1-down/1-up/1-down ... but more like 3-up/1-down/3-up/1-down ... and the next pass, the whole thing is shifted by one thread. I'm also thinking on how to make a braid (French 'tresse') not with 3 but 4 or more threads, based on your previous masterpiece (braiding machine). The kinematics might be too difficult to reproduce mechanically and one may need recourse to use EV3/NXT ... -
Which stock set for MOC supercar?
DrJB replied to Ploki's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
The A-arms SHOULD work with the new (steerable) hubs. All you need is two towball pins, as shown below + += works fine However, the non-steerable will be difficult to attach to the A-arm + ? += ? -
Minds-i
DrJB replied to nerdsforprez's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
While I see the 'resemblance' with Lego, I do not see any patent violations. There are many 'industrial'/modular systems where one can remotely draw some analogy to Lego, and it's a 'weak' case to just go after liftarms. After all, the bore is not smooth (look closely), the pitch (distance between holes) might be different, and the connectors are VERY different from anything Lego. Just my opinion of course.- 14 replies

My kids (and I) used to love stopping by TRU on special days where they had small free builds, but I have not seen that in a while. Of course, it was a good initiative for TRU/TLG and you'd almost always end up picking a larger set for the grown-ups. It started with small/bagged/official (or exclusive) sets and they'd give one to each child. But then, to discourage speculators, they'd give you an open bag and 'force' you to build that set in the store (or you don't qualify). Then at last, they had trays of the parts, and you'd go pick 2 of this and 5 of that and build the set of the week. That program no longer happens somehow, has it been discontinued or TLG/TRU thought they could do without (same as the grab bags).

I bet some would buy multiple sets (because of the unique colors) and build their own LARGE castle ... MOCers, get to it!

[HELP] Number of Axles
DrJB replied to aminnich's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
As you and others have pointed to, there are many reasons to decide how many axles. First, for a given truck-trailer, there typically are three types of axles: Steering, driving/driven, and purely load bearing. If you take an 18-wheeler truck/trailer combination, the front axle is for steering, axles 2/3 on the truck are for both traction and load bearing, and axles 4/5 on the trailer are only to support the load (not driven and not steerable). Adding more axles is typically done to reduce the tire/road pressure and thus increase the load capacity of the truck. Making more axles driven/powered, will even out the traction force on those axles, for uniform tire wear. Unlike cars, where 4WD has benefits in off-road and bad weather conditions, you rarely (if ever) see trucks with AWD, unless on some specialty vehicles. -
Yes, the picture is from bricklink (as you can easily find out since it was hot- linked). I guess what you're saying is that it is not necessarily 'official'.

Amazing how many top-notch entries this contest has generated. For sure it'll be difficult to pick an 'absolute' winner. Wishful Thinking: The organizers should make it a rule that all entries must have building instructions included .

Agreed, and it sure looks that way. But, him going to the extent of calling it a 'magic motor set', did he just package two motors back-to-back and that was 'magic' for him?
-
In that video, he has two motors assembled back-to-back (appears that way) and calls it a 'magic motor'. Any idea what that exactly is? Someone who speaks Korean could do some sub-titling ...

I was looking at the photo below, and one can easily notice that the truck drums appear to have been 3D printed. Did they need to make the official picture BEFORE the actual part (from a mold) was available?

Lego Wedo controlled by EV3dev
DrJB replied to pcfw's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Might be a good idea to keep all the WeDo topics under the SAME thread. There are so many of them, and all are fragmented. -
I thought you 'disliked' everything about this set . Nonetheless, in my past experience, the boxes always had pictures of what else you could build with the included parts, and no instructions were provided for all such 'art/box work'. You'll notice that, next to the models, there are lights bulbs. Those mean 'ideas/suggestions'... Unless someone else knows otherwise.

Fantastic MOC, any recent update?

Also, 42000 has the new wheel hubs/spindles, though you could always get those from Bricklink

General Part Discussion
DrJB replied to Polo-Freak's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Rather than posting links, when you go to Bricklink, right click on the picture and select 'Copy Image', then paste into your EB message, and Voila! The picture shows directly (instead of the link). Much faster for the reader, and they also get all pictures at once. Plus, this does not count against your max size allowance on EB. Example:- 5,504 replies
