Call it an effort in minimizing costs (as every company ought to do), but it 'appears' that in the past, when technic parts were introduced, they were available in many colors, be it pins, gears, or even some connectors. Now somehow, many parts exist in one single color only. While this makes 'sorting' easy and keeps TLG's inventory under control, it sure offers limited possibilities for MOCs and those aggressively engaged in serious 'styling'. Any chance/plan for TLG to re-introduce a wider color selection for the Technic parts or does this go against any business 'sense'?

[Software] LDCad - LDraw cad
DrJB replied to legolijntje's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
Hopefully this is relevant to many on here: My installation of LDCad does not find any of the parts. Other packages (Ldraw) do find the parts and display them correctly, but not LDCad. Anyone with a clue? In the Crowkillers Murcielago, some parts were clearly created by mirroring, it's as if the software mirrored the actual part geometry. More specifically, these are the various angle connector as one can clearly see the numbers backwards. In such case, it is difficult to keep track of the part's ID. Instead, a more correct way would be to have the mirroring fubction search for the 'mirror' part and get/assign it's proper ID. Otherwise, creating a part list from the digital model may not be accurate. -

Akiyuki did something similar but he used an NXT brick. Now, what u're thinking (I'm guessing) is to push the motor left or right depending on whether the ball is soccer/basketball. But then, what do you use to detect the ball color? Surely some sort of light sensor and thus the NXT/EV3 seems unavoidable (back to Akiyuki)- 1,124 replies

Problem with the pneumatic hoses
DrJB replied to Freekysch's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Well ... you can always wet the hoses with 'saliva' before you install them. While wet, it's slippery, once dry, it stays there and won't move. -

Thank you Blakbird. For a while I thought I was having a 'monologue' on this thread (and that of the Murcielago). I was able to find the MOV files on the CD. They were in a hidden folder and the naming appears random. So far the rest of the CD appears useless, but I will explore a VM installation this weekend. I also found the assembly movie you mentioned on daily-motion. Someone went through the arduous task of stitching together many individuals MOVs.- 41 replies

I looked up the Apple Store and could not find anything called 'Brickset 3D View'. You have an app name? -
Digital tools for tablets

It seems that the main computer would still be doing the calculations, and the tablet is just a remote screen ... I'll give it a try tonight and see how it performs. -

I'm looking for a viewer for both LDD/LDraw that works on the iPad. Sorry that was not too clear. Looking into megabricks now. -
Granted it is not easy to do an LDD design on an iPad, but still, one could be easy to visualize a given model. I have several MPD files and was wondering for a way to view those on a tablet. Anyone knows of an application or if one is in the works?

You need to save that file, then open it in a program that can read it e.g., LDraw- 1,124 replies

Removing the grease was not a good idea, should try and put it back. Now, those motors only auto-center while still under power. If somehow you turn the motor all the way to either position, then cut the power (disconnect the cable), it will NOT return to center. That is why, even in the crawler's instruction book, they show how to zero such motor before installing it. In summary: 1. Put grease back. 2. Return to center (zero) only happens when motor is still under power.

DrJB replied to Lost_In_Noise's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
So, I finally managed to get a *new* copy of this elusive set, at a deal I could not pass up. Problem is: I could not get the software to install on a Windows 7 machine, it stops after it tries to install QuickTime 3 ... and refuses to do anything else. Has anyone figured a workaround or need I install an XP Virtual Machine ?- 41 replies

Absence of 4X4 in most offroad sets.
DrJB replied to Ondra's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I'm not sure such this generation is (insert whatever you had in mind) ... Truth of the matter is many AFOLs grew up with a more developed 'mechanical' aptitude. I learned about differentials and gears BEFORE I started playing with Lego. In fact, Lego was the avenue for me to replicate some mechanisms I had leaned in school. So, it is normal that AFOLs are more drawn to mechanical functions whereas the younger/newer, it's all about iPads and minecraft. Are they missing a lot? Not sure, but some of the new technology does not interest me at times too, ... To each his own, and you can't compare generations. -

We had a former Lego employee on this forum who once stated that he was 'forced' to use the round 1x1 tile in place of the square 1x1 tile, for cost reasons. When, you think about it, every bit of plastic you can save helps your bottom line. Granted, not all decisions are based on cost, but cost is ALWAYS a major attribute. TLG is in the business of making money, like every other successful corporation out there. Sometimes we 'seem' to complain about cost, but we're only stating the most 'obvious'. That said, I can give multiple examples where parts were re-designed to save some plastic e.g., the 4L/3L cardan for starters. The rock crawler vs. 41999 is an exception as both sets had the same MSRP, and yet the parts assortment (and PF) was very different between the two. -

DrJB replied to Ondra's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
It 'appears' the majority of purchases are made based on the 'looks' of the set, and not the functionality/intricacies. For a MOCer, it's always a challenge if he/she can improve upon's the original set. I see most recent cars as just starting points. This is especially true since most original sets are rather 'hollow' and have lots of room for upgraded/functionality. In contrast, MOCs such as D3K's SwingLoader are so compact/dense, that it's almost impossible to add anything. In other words, TLG is very skilled at making large sets with fewer parts, just my opinion of course, and by doing so, they provide us with room for added functionality. While many (on here and else) still buy a set for its 'intended' purpose, for many it's just a starting point to build upon, isn't that what Lego is really about? -
