[REVIEW] 8450 The Mission
DrJB replied to Lost_In_Noise's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Thanks SR71 for finding that movie. I did an LXF based on it. Since not all parts are available in LDD (e.g. panels, 9L link and pneumatic shock), I used some 'alternates'. Feel free to download/update/improve. Would be nice if a POV is made as I do not recall one exists. Here is what is missing/incomplete: 1. No panel fairings (not available in LDD) 2. Pneumatic shock replaced by stacked 2x2 clear round bricks 3. Flex axles 12M and 19M not bent, as LDD won't allow that. 4. Attachments not done (not in movie) - Two done, third not as there are no bionicle parts in LDD. LXF File: http://www.brickshel...ry.cgi?f=536161- 41 replies

Madoka's Truck - WIP LXF File
DrJB replied to DrJB's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Almost ... That topic is for Madoka's SUVs (Mk1 and Mk2). He has made other vehicles, and if you go to his instructions on google (below), he has a Red Monster Truck (farthest to the right). The LXF above is for such truck. https://plus.google....64977943/albums -
Variable Pitch Propeller

How about these Lego blades 89509? I wonder how much lift would they generate. -
Adjustable Spirograph
DrJB replied to Blakbird's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I felt the grey 12T gear (next to the yellow on the bottom left corner) had too much overhung. I made a small modification (yellow parts) as shown below. -
Adjustable Spirograph

I agree fully and, again, was in no way criticizing the collective effort and the goal behind it ... I too find it easier to build from instructions as well, but often seeing the whole assembly in LDD makes it easy to think of tweaks/improvements and that, you cannot get from a 'step-by-step' PDF file. Perhaps most importantly, building from LDD is at times rather 'challenging' and that's how some of us (i.e., I) get their 'buzz'. Again, I truly applaud the collective effort to make instructions for this set and thus, make it available to a larger audience. Cheers, and ... happy building. -
Variable Pitch Propeller
DrJB replied to Sariel's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Neat experiment. The video introduction covers helicopter rotors and that might be a bit misleading as those have both collective and cyclic. In your case, I think you're using only collective. Now, and as you do know, how sensitive is the thrust to blade angle depends really on the blade geometry. I wonder how the thrust depends on both the pitch and orientation of the blades from the energy add-on set. Lastly, possibly one contraption I'd like to build/see is with a mindstorms system. Such system would be suspended by 3-4 parallel wires as a pendulum, the blades would be assembled such that the thrust vector is horizontal. When the blades are on, they would pull the system (against gravity) to the side, and depending on how far the system moves, that would be the 'amount' of thrust the system would have developed ... I am not sure those blades generate enough thrust ... not only that, but they are so flimsy and most likely will have so much vibration that the 'thrust' vector would 'not' be constant ... -

Thank you, that makes perfect sense ... There are times I find it difficult to build from LDD as well, and PDF instructions on an iPad are more practical. -

Of course ... I initially got my math backwards ... -

While I certainly applaud the collective effort and dedication, I still do not 'get' it ... I was able to build the whole thing simply from the LXF model (it took about 3 hours). So, what is so special about making building instructions? Is it the challenge/joy or something else? -
New Akiyuki GBC
DrJB replied to DrJB's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
In fact, Akiyuki put out few version of his 20 GBC modules. One of them uses a Mindstorms NXT Color Sensor to separate the balls ... but they get mixed up again later in the contraption. Look in his youtube channel. -

I mentioned this in another thread (most likely not the 'right' place) ... so, here it is again: How about a 'dedicated/pinned' thread/index to worthy (must build, Hall-Of-Fame) MOCs? I'm thinking the following 1. Mahjqa Grudge 2. Mahjqa Ghost in a shell 3. D3K Swing Loader 4. Madoka's SUVs Mk 1 and Mk 2 5. ??? Spirographe ... The decision as to whether it qualifies to the HOF of all MOCs can be done after a poll. Such thread would make it easy to find interesting models ... as ... not sure how one would 'search' for those -
Killough Platform, NXT version
DrJB replied to Sariel's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I bought a set off ebay recently ($40 for 4) and the main improvement is, they generate less vibration, thanks to contoured profiles. You will never get such a smooth ride from lego-made Omni-wheels. -
Killough Platform, NXT version
DrJB replied to Sariel's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Thank You. That sounds like quite an investment as I do not have an xbox ... only PS3 here. Can this be easily ported to PS3? Edit: Wait, I do not need the whole XBOX360 system, they DO sell separate controllers! -

DrJB replied to Sariel's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Fascinating indeed. I got some omniwheels recently and will try this out. Can you give more details on how to get the xbox controller to work? Any special hardware/software needed? -
We all have different 'standards' as to what to expect from a new/used purchase off some of the popular sites, be it flea-bay or bricklink. In any event, what have been your most 'challenging' mishaps? I'll name a few. 1. Placed a medium sized order on BL. Lady kept on giving me one excuse after another, took 2 weeks to ship. Parts were supposed to be new. Many had teeth marks on them ... but worst part? .. there was a nail clipping in the bag ... yikes. 2. From BL again ... parts were supposedly new. Had few scratches on them ... but seller recycled an old bag .. that had some 'sticky' feel to it ... Darn! couldn't he afford NEW ziplock bags?

GBC General Discussion

Nice initiative Ted/Jim ... I was thinking along the same lines ... How about an index/discussion for most notorious Cars/Trucks/... MOCS .. ie, those definitely worth replicating. PS. not sure where this fits, so por favor, relocate at will.- 1,124 replies

DrJB replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Gotta revise my strategy here ... The number of original threads is no longer an achievable goal ... I'll stick to the more 'attainable' number of useful posts. I wonder if this one counts ... Seriously though ... just enjoying the 'patience' of Jim and Ted ... Thank you for your patience ... Mr Moderator ... Your proposal is interesting, I noticed that (almost) every F1 can be made into a truck, not sure the reciprocal holds ... A worthy (and expensive) challenge though, which means I need to get the 42009 to begin with. -
Adjustable Spirograph
DrJB replied to Blakbird's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
What is really 'deceptive' in great MOCS (such as your spirographe) is that the final product does not do justice to the countless hours spent builiding/optimizing it. It must have taken tens of hours of trial and error to come up with a functional/clean/compact assembly. The final product rarely gives an appeciation of all the hard work behind it. Great piece again ... can't wait for your next iteration. -

I should have been more specific ... For all the Technic F1 cars (I have), the B model happens always to be a truck ... -

Question is: What do F1 cars and trucks have in common? Should rename this: Technic Trivia. Though, can you think of an answer to the topic's question? -
