While the result is indeed very nice, I 'ponder' at the usefulness of such video. Do not get me wrong, mastering the needed technical skills and having enough patience for such endeavors is commendable. Yet, at the same time, I am not sure I see a value added as the video is simply 'fun-to-watch' (maybe fun-to-make too) ... but nothing more. Possibly where I am coming from is ... as we age, we tend to be more 'careful' in how we spend our time, and projects that require a long commitment are no longer that attractive. All the Best.

Impossible LEGO
DrJB replied to Boxerlego's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
We have all encountered physical contraptions that somehow LDD won't allow i.e., you can build it with actual parts, but LDD won't let you model it. Well, how about the other way around? Can you think of (Technic) contraptions that LDD will let you build, but you can't in real life? .. well, maybe you can with 3D printing, but that are impossible with actual lego parts. Here is an example. What else can you come up with? IMpossible.lxf -
I'll build 3 entries for you .... only if I can keep the parts .... do I see a Power Puller in there? Thanks for the free 'move' ... but it ain't Massey, nor is it Ferguson ...

That's a no-no color where I work ... we make a 'better' version, and we paint them red ... Seems there are multiple opinions here again. Sorry if I may have 'blown-off' your idea ... the intent is to generate some discussion ... but we'll let the mods (Jim/Ted/Tim/Jed) decide.

It is Corn Harvesting season here in the US Midwest (Chicago area). While driving to work this morning, I saw three vehicles working together: a Combine, a Tractor, and a Grain Trailer. That would be a neat triple entry ... but only if you make it in RED (please no Green!) Any takers ... or other ideas?

Seems you've done your homework ... for those are amongst the best sets in recent years. Happy Building! Thinking about the new yellow crane but can't justify it as it has only one motor ... and I already have its predecessor (8421). Might end up opening my 41999 at last as it's been sitting for a while.

[TRIPLE] Woodworkers
DrJB replied to Alasdair Ryan's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Let me guess .... besides Lego, wood-working is your 'other' hobby? Hint: Could up the parts count and go for: CNC Lathe (mindstorms) + Machining Center + Gleason/Oerlikon Gear Cutter ... -
Of course they do, but as always, any given design is a balancing act of various performances (balancing = compromises). I was by no means 'criticizing' TLG ... I was simply looking at it from 'my' area of expertise i.e. noise. I can tell you for sure that TLG motors are NOT optimized for noise. The latter is often perceived as an 'indicator' for good/bad product quality. I have done sound recordings (of EV3/NXT motors) and Fourier analysis ... and the spectra suggest it is the gears that are noisy (too much backlash), not the electrical motors. This, to me, is an indication of 'improper' gear design, but then again, this is a toy, not a high-tech commodity ... I'll stop here as we've ventured a bit off-topic.

Thank you Philo, commendable work. You mentioned poor lubrication, and here is something I noticed. My EV3 motors tend to be noisier than the NXT. I had suspected as well that improper lubrication might be the culprit ... Yet not willing to sacrifice one the motors and open it up yet. On the other hand, the choice of grease with plastic gears is very 'delicate' ...

I was just at the store (15-Oct) and they had about 40x sets of the 41999. I spoke to the store manager as I had called few weeks ago and was told they were sold out. He mentioned those were in a 'surprise' shipment and they were not expecting them. So, for those of you who have not had your chance yet, do not give up, and pay frequent visits to your local Lego store. Good Luck

... You got me curious now, I've had a raspberry for a few months now and there are many add-on IO boards available. I have 'seen' some projects on-line where people are using the Rasp to control various mindstorms transducers (ipo NXT/EV3). I just looked up Teensy ... seems like a new 'player' on the block, will need to look further and explore potential. Thanks.

Sounds neat, then you might as well do a Raspberry-PF box as the latter is supposedly 'non-profit'. Yet, slowly that idea is migrating towards the Mindstorms product line. How do you ultimately draw the line and differentiate between the two? Somehow TLG has kept 2 separate product lines: 1. The Remote-based PF (human-controlled), and 2. Mindstorms Robotics, that where the toy interacts with its surroundings through a set of 'smart' sensors. They tried something in between, as in SpyBotics or StarWars Scouts, but with no lasting success (in my opinion at least). Lately I have seen many 'mechatronic' Cuusoos ... and while those are neat 'ideas', I'm afraid they'll remain just that. Do not get me wrong though, I would be pleasantly surprised if those come to life.

Spybotics CD and Instructions
DrJB replied to pmichiel's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Where are you at? I'm in the US and have the CD. Since this is a discontinued item, is it ok to make a copy and send it? Warning though: My recollection this works only with Windows XP, and needs the OLD serial port (not USB). So you need an old PC to use the software.- 21 replies

Remnants ... from a Studded Era
DrJB replied to DrJB's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Exactly my point ... good to be in agreement. -
Thank you. I did start one (posted earlier in this thread) but my LDD skills are not as refined yet for such build. That might be a good starting point for such endeavor. For the 2-door version, a full LDD is already available (Look in this earlier thread).
