Cleaning models
kieran replied to DarkShadow73's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I use a compressor and a paint brush, small one 1/2" with soft bristles (no scratches). I start off with a good blast right into the inner workings and then brush off the surface bits. on old sets that have been built for a while, I take them apart and where necessary wash the parts before a good dry and re-assembly. -
This is amazing, just what I wanted, I don't have a min lathe so will definitely be ordering some sets from you, nice post and great work on this

what about an IP camera, with a built n web server then you just connect to it using the browser, over wifi not sure on the rules of posing links to shopping sites, think its ok? so something like this http://gb.dinodirect.com/ip-network-camera-wifi-wireless-ins-wfip12b.html?vn=RGlub2RpcmVjdEZ1Y2s&AFFID=33&source=sem may do the job, just the size to think about

Motor Upgrade
kieran replied to Boxerlego's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
do you know the motor that was in the original XL motor? -

which country are you in? -
That is good news on the backwards compatibility, I wonder if the new elements will work on the old NXT as well. I will not make the jump until there is a good c or java port for this brick, but would be nice to play with the new motors and sensors, guess the motors will be fine and once the specs are released for the sensors we should be able to use them in raw mode on the next so all will be well.

Combining parts from multiple sets
kieran replied to mobi's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Same here, I have a range of small parts containers and some large parts containers, all sorted by type then colour if there are lots of them. the last time i sold a set was a Model team truck, I have the original instructions so i built the model then took photos and sold it. you will need to build it anyway assuming you are storing broken down, all that remains is a quick check on bricklink to see what extras were included over the main a-model and your done. this way you get to have all your parts when you needed them. -
This is a nice one, I have seen a few on line but this one works really well, I also like the addition of NXT as it makes it more real, in the way the chain picks up and the station area.

That's so cool, what a neat way to implement ride height adjustment with RC

Really nice work on that, it looks 100% original, and in a layout you would never know. i have only 9V track and have bid on loads but never won one as I just can't justify the cost

Nice work and write up, much better with LEDS

Modifying Power Functions to allow more options
kieran replied to sirrobin's topic in LEGO Train Tech
that's very cool to know, so all you have to do is send out the control bit and your off so as long as you have a strict switch on plan you are away -
Modifying Power Functions to allow more options

I think the issue here is that the firmware on the receivers will not be written to understand this extra selection bit? it may be possible that there is an extra link on the circuit board to set this so the current switch selects between the 4 new channels, I have not had a look. To use the Lego remote you would assume they made the same addition i.e an extra link that can be made to set this bit. I have no idea if this is enabled in hardware or more likely a change to the firmware. When i get back i will take a look at the CB, or hunt for an image on line, I am sure one is floating around somewhere. -

Would also like to know what spec motor is going in -
Just gets better and better, this is looking like a complete solution, very clever

Hi, I am not sure how far you can go with the default Lego programming environment. I use NXT which is free and includes a remote that can move the three motors independently or you would code one in windows OSX if you know how to program? As far as scanning with the sensor goes this is very possible, you need to write a loop that repeats until the sensor value reaches some point, in NXC I would use 2 parallel tasks, one would take care of the left / right movement and the other monitoring the US sensor, then the sensors picks up a target it would set a variable that the other movement task is checking in the main movement loop, this will then stop the main movement and hand control of the motor to the targeting task, once this has completed it sets the variable back and the main left right task takes back control and continues until the program ends.

I Love this set, the only one for ages that a proper compressor, mine is till on a shelf right behind me form my childhood, stayed in the loft during my dark ages only to be removed and worked first time, the only issue I have is the turntable is not that quick, but other than that amazing. Nice review thanks for taking the time

This is working out to be a very complete looking solution, thanks for sharing
