Now that is a thing of beauty, really like the look of that, very nice work

its a capacitor to suppress spikes this has 2 benefits, reduces electrical noise and extend the brush life of the motor

Yep heat is the way, the issue it will kill the motor the gear is on as the heat will travel up the shaft, the trick when putting it back on is to be quick, get it just hot enough and no more, to be extra sure you can chill the motor and new shaft in the freezer before applying the hot gear but be cartful as you can get it too cold and then you run the risk of creating condensation in your nice new motor. good luck

Nice one, am well pleased you got it done

Mine are shipped, can't wait to try them out

You may have some issues with a good speed on this. The first issue is that the max output is 95% duty cycle and then you have to factor in the voltage drop of the output stage approx 0.7v that assumes the own controller will be happy with the input voltage of 4.5. I bet it needs 3.3v min so assuming there is a liner reg on the input stage you may just get it to work but the topmspeed will be no where near the top speed of a 4.5v batter pack connected directly. All that said for less than £15 it may be worth a go

You can run 2 trains per channel, red and blue so in theory with out mods you can have 8 going at once all off one control

The main issue is that the PF battery box is not just a batter holder, it has some electronics in side that protest other PF elements from damage. The best approach if you want to use the new style PF battery box will be to remove the electronics and replace the 3 position switch with a simple 2 position ON/OFF then you can be usre that when the switch is on which way the polarity is connected. from there you can just make an extension cable to connect a charger for NiCads will need to work with 7.2V like used for RC cars to a PF cable, use the PF extension cable and your all set. The comment about cells in the battery discharging and recharging at different rates is worth noting, you should set out on this project with a nice new set of 6 cells all the same type and capacity, this is the best way to ensure they discharge and recharge at a smiler rate. Most RC toys have a simple battery of cells connected in serias for both charging and running the toy so you should be fine.

MOC: Track, Ramp and Shelf Maintenance Train - extended version
kieran replied to Haddock51's topic in LEGO Train Tech
I think you did a really good job on this, I like the way the train looks juts like a normal train, but has a very specific purpose. to help with the drag of the cotton pads, is there a way to use round polishing wheels and actual make them turn with a motor or some clever gearing so that you need less direct friction with the rail? -

TRAIN TECH Help, General Questions & Talk to the Staff
kieran replied to WesternOutlaw's topic in LEGO Train Tech
I have some sympathy with this, the other common rule that gets broken is search before porting, so if there is an old post should a new OP always create a new topic, I fear if they do others will simply point out it been covered and they should search, if they add there 2 pence worth to an old post they are wrong for bunging a post. I think the main thing is the relevance or reason for the comment, simply adding i like it to a 3 year sold pots is not that clever, but asking if an answer was ever found to an old question could be a good way to get a meaningful discussion going?- 578 replies

very nice work, I think the half barrels at the back for the tank ends work really well, will look to make something like this in the future

If you are happy to move away form standard all you need is 2 LEDS one green one red or both clear what ever you like and 2 resistors, for connection to PF switch box i would get a PF extension cable and cut that to wire up as the connection will be easy. all parts con be ordered I the UK form Maplin on line or RS excluding the PF wire take a look at the LEDS they have and add a link here I will work out the resistor you need and all you have to do is wire up, for testing you would get away with stripping the wire and twisting the legs of the LEDS and resistors to the wires, for long term use you should solder them you can get a basic soldering kit for very little money

its nice to dream though
