[SR-FB1] Nov '616 - Fortune Favours the Gold
Bregir replied to Kwatchi's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
This is by far the best way I have ever seen to depict a mine with visibility, while still maintaining the feeling of being underground in an enclosed mineshaft. Great work! Also, I am surprised the "good" bishop didn't just appropriate the gold mine for himself! -
Well, it seems I keep repeating myself! Keep the good stories coming! The boatshed is, as you say, simply, but effective. I would suggest finding a different way to finish it up at the top, though, as the red plate looks odd. Perhaps some different coloured detailing up there to indicate the construction of the roof, or something. I am certain I have seen some innovative examples, but can't think of them right now. I had the exact same experience. I would suggest adding more light to the photos, though, but on my computer, they look great and very dramatic!

[ESL] Through the Swamp and around
Bregir replied to Elostirion's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
I am loving those irregular bases and that fabulous landscaping. I wonder though, why the landscaping surrounding the swamp is so barren. Wouldn't the wet conditions lead to lushness around the swamp, making me expect to see more green? However, both dike and footpath is looking cool, and I am still hoping to chime in with a build for this road! Looking forward for more!- 5 replies

[OL-FB3] Fight for the Stolen Plans
Bregir replied to Franco Clarke's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
I will second this! Another great instalment to your story, Franco, and backed with a nice build too! I like how you are adding to your layout, and it looks great - will be looking forward to seeing more. As to colours, you have chosen well so far, so I really will let that up to you (and your brick collection... ). I tend to go crazy from time to time and add in some limegreen or so, and typically, it works quite well, so don't be afraid to experiment. I really like the shot with the carriage and the buildings all around! -
[ESL] Cotton Plantations, Terreli Hills
Bregir replied to Elostirion's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Great idea with a hillside field, Elostirion - we tend to imagine fields as flat, but back then they didn't need heavy machinery to be able to navigate them. The landscaping is great, as is that little hut. Very well done! Not sure I buy the justification for Fontonajo to take his share of the profits - You aren't keeping serfs, are you? -
Shipwrights Guild Hall (WIPs, feedback, and advice)
Bregir replied to Bregir's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Great to see some activity here! And it seems we lured out some of the veterans! Fixed that for ya! If anywhere, this is exactly where you should get technical! Bring it on! @Legostone As I said elsewhere, I too like those plans, and I will be looking very much forward to seeing your rendition! While achieving those sleek lines might require some compromise on deck height, I have every confidence you will make it work! I have only two comments to your current WIP: 1) That size! and 2) I am not sure I like that "fishtail-shape" you've got going with the cabin. I think it should be parallel sides, rather than protruding like that. But it really is hard to see how it will work out so soon! @Kolonialbeamter I bring out a 48, and you absotively have to bring out something bigger! Seems like BoBS will be prone to a huge arms race some time soon! ( @Maxim I started it, though! ) I have to say, she is looking absolutely fabulous, if perhaps a little boxy. Her curves are very straight, suggesting a late period ship. Rigging looks great, and she's even got royals up top! Her bow is expertly done, with some really organic shaping! And with all that gingerbreadwork, she looks fit for her name! A flagship for the [Insert French name for navy]? _________________________________________________ Also, back to ships of the REAL Royal Navy, and in honour of her majesty Queen Anetta, I present to you an update of the HMS Endeavour: She is now approximate 84 studs at the waterline, approximately 24 studs wide, and will be carrying 48 guns in her broadsides (excluding carronades on the upper works and possibly guns in the cabin). I am quite happy with how her bow turned out, and I think the forecastle looks less abrupt now. She still needs a figurehead, some detailing and a solution for the waterline at the bow, but I am quite pleased with her curves. More so, I like how her stern turned out, and I knew those Moorish arches would be good for something! As to colourful accents, I will probably stick to the black of the gunports, stern and bow, possibly interspersed with a little pearl gold or yellow if I feel frisky! -
Safe-House Gang for Gangs Challenge.
Bregir replied to The Architect's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Great looking gang, Architect! I like the posing in the overview shots, although some one else seems to like shots too... Your interior is simple but very effective - looks like the sort of basement where such a gang would concoct their plans! And I like the ship-swapping story! Early examples of Sharonomics? BTW, did you ever sign up for BoBS? If not, what are you waiting for?! -
Very cool figs, Kai, and very diverse too! I enjoyed their back-stories (although I did confuse the names a few times! :P And until I got to Thomson, I was wondering who ever did any work! ;)
-
Great looking foodstuff, Kai! I really like the diversity, as I am sure the King will!
-
Great story and build, Ayrlego - and a sat of very nice figures. I can't quite make out all of them, but at least I recognised some! The highlight to me is your wall texturing, though. I have to ask - you have bricks protruding a bit in places - Am I right in assuming those are tiles pushed in just a little bit? Or are they really jumper plates? It will be interesting to follow Mooreton Bay under a new leader, but more so to see what adventures the Prio Seas will lay before Allcock!1

Haha, perfect! And if tv's were invented, some large screen would show reality tv right from the Eslandian high council... But it's probably better to stay out in the sun!

Really nice building and great looking gang. I like the youthful take on the criminal underworld, and I think the "magic-y" aspects of this is perfectly subdued to fit to BoBS. Your rockwork and landscaping is really nice, and the half-timbered building is looking great. I also enjoy that you gave your gang a story, rather than just presenting them with their biographies. Well done!

Greetings everyone, The Shipwrights Guild Hall has now opened - come share your ideas, ship-mocs and general thoughts on building ships!

Greetings, shipwrights. Whether a novice, an apprentice, a master, or a veteran shipwright, following the process of others, sharing your own, and giving and receiving feedback can help everyone improve. What's the point? This is just a place for all of us liberally to post WIP's for feedbacks, tips, suggestions, and questions, without otherwise littering the BoBS forum with WIP's. You can post just one step in the process, or several over a period. It's all up to you. So I am working on a vessel/ship - what do I do? Post one or more pictures, questions, ship-plans, descriptions, etc. here, and hopefully someone will step in with some wonderful advice. At least, I expect to do so. I know NOTHING about ships - can I comment, and how do I do? Everyone with something constructive to say can comment. No need to be a scholar in historic vessels, medieval carpentry or sail making. Sometimes it might just be aesthetics, a crazy idea, a suggestion for a technique, use of a specific brick, or whatever you can think of. Just keep it nice and constructive. In return, builders posting here will pwomise not to take offense! I'd suggest tagging the builder you are commenting on. But I am not an expert - the arrogant elite will laugh at my puny attempts at shipbuilding! First of all, the arrogant elite was not invited. In fact, they have been given specific instructions to go back to their fancy little elitist coffee houses to talk about how brilliant they are. Secondly, regarding puny attempts, take a look at my first attempt at a ship just two and a half years ago... Well, you really don't have to look. Move along... Nothing to see here... The rather obvious point being, we all start somewhere, and no matter where you start, or how steep your learning curve is. The only requirement is that you want to share your process, learn from others, share your ideas, and/or improve. Soooo, is this something official? What will I gain from participating? EGS bonuses? HAH! This is merely me gone rogue - and I may hang from my toes for it! No official bonuses here. However, I'd like to see a bit more focus on the process and techniques of building here, and I think ships is an interesting place to start. This is, however, quite likely to be replaced, superseded, or added to by something official at some point in the future. Who manages this and keeps the record? Manages? Keeps records? Bwahahaha - forget it! Just post your WIP's and comments. Don't overthink it! ________________________________________________________________________ Kick off! Oooohkay, here we go: I have been working on a 4th rate, circa 50 guns on two decks. I present to you: The HMS Endeavour. Started here: Went here: And have ended here: She is supposed to be the first in a series of 4th rates designed for colonial waters. A 4th rate is a small ship of the line between 46 and 60 guns, just above frigate size. This one is (IC) specifically designed to serve as flagship for colonial squadrons, sailing in consort with frigates and sloops. Looking forward to hearing your comments! And to see your WIP's!

Settlement : Trador, La Sombra, Eslandola
Bregir replied to Maxim I's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
The Montoya Estate is happy to hear its concerns addressed so well, and will buy at least one, and up to three properties, should they be available. Best regard Ibn al'Sayeed Coat of arms will follow later.- 56 replies

Settlement : Trador, La Sombra, Eslandola
Bregir replied to Maxim I's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
To the Mayor of Trador, The Montoya Estate may well be interested in purchasing a property. However, a few questions arise: 1) Will lost revenue during wars be reimbursed after peace has been established? This is relevant for the case where the owner of the property cannot be blamed for the state of war. 2) What of the situation where Maestro is the instigator of conflict? What sort of protection will be offered against this contingency? Looking forward to your clarifications. Your servant Ibn al'Sayeed The Montoya Estate That's where you got my attention!- 56 replies

Great looking inn, Phred. I like how you have combined such relatively simple bricks and techniques into such a harmonious building. It looks really classy!

If you are referring to the MRCA, the brethren courts is working on it, including new ship-classes. Nothing to publish yet, though. :) The plans are to automate things as far as possible, to avoid the heavy annual manual work of rolling dies and calculating results, while still maintaining the risky nature. If you are referring to basically anything else, chances are, it has already been adjusted. We would like to help, but you will need to be a little more specific in your question. Anyways, is anything holding you back? I don't see any risk of the plans for a revised MRCA to make any efforts lost, so just get cracking! ;)

[COR-FB] Her Majesty's Winged Cuirassiers, King's Harbour
Bregir replied to Bregir's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Thanks all! Thanks, BD, that was what I was aiming for. They are supposed to be some of the Queen's finest, and should inspire respect! Thank you Capt Wolf, but I must disagree: It is a versatile weapon, but while mounted it will mainly be used as a lance. (Although mounted on the saddle with the axe-head upwards when not in use, as shown in the original post) Liked your musketeers, btw, although they are a very different type of troops. I know - and I experienced a bit with that too, but as I wanted the cuirasses, I decided to go this route instead. And I might build the whole barracks/stable one day, but for now, that is at the bottom of a VERY long list... Liked those Hussars, btw. Perhaps so! It is always fun - and if we had all the time in the world, we should have a "troop index"! Come to think of it, perhaps at least official corlander troops should be indexed... Hmmm. Thanks, LW. Cuirassiers is an interesting concept, lodged between the knight and the dragoon (ish) and Corrington needed some shock-troops! Thanks, Captain. Btw, I think @Elostirion had some mounted Nellisei or something like that. Scratch that, they were infantry! Thanks - those yellowed bricks are totally a choice and not a result of my old collection! As this is only a troop of 24 riders, they are commanded by a lowly captain. But either he or his 2iC can receive the bottle, if you believe it of military nature. Otherwise, a political official would be more suited. Thanks - they are indeed ready for almost anything!- 11 replies

Check out @Maxim I's BoBS created Ship Index for inspiration and a hint of the sizes for each class. While some factions have an overweight of some professions (Traders in Eslandola, nobility and religious characters in Oleon, scientists in Corrington, and pirates and smugglers in the sea rats) you are basically free to choose, regardless of your profession. The only thing is that the three national factions (OL, ESL, and COR) are organised nations, and will/can not accept piracy. (But then you can be a naval officer, which you can't really in the Sea Rats) Monthly Raiding and Commerce action. It is what we do with our ships to make money and take prizes. But as someone else said, it is currently being remade, so it will be as new to you, as to anyone else, so there is really no need to worry about that until the new mechanics are published! Once again - welcome!

You say its confusing, but then you explain it exactly how it is! Choose faction: Find one that fits the building style and story you have in mind. A few words on the factions. (I have ranked them after my estimated number of active members. If you are in doubt, you *could* choose the smaller of the factions in question, but the choice is entirely free. ) Eslandola: Highest number of active members by a reasonable margin. A nation of merchants and businessmen. Think Portugal/Spain under the age of discovery and colonisation. The Trade Companies are the most powerful institutions of Eslandola, and they have been struggling with the King for power over the nation. Corrington: Probably second most active faction, although at times, Oleon occupies this position. A nation where science and order is at the heart of everything. Think England during the late age of sail. Ruled in the order of a constitutional monarchy, where most decisions are discussed openly with its members. Oleon: Vying with Corrington for second place. A nation of traditional values, specifically the faith and the military. Think France in the century up to the revolution. Ruled by a king with an influence of the Faith. Sea Rats: Least most active faction, although activity has been growing. A nation of independent traders, pirates, privateers, deserters, smugglers, tavernkeeps and mercenaries. If freedom under the black flag is your thing. Think the pirates of the Caribbean (movie or historical entity - both will work ) or "Black Sails". More open for individualistic action, less government, and less concerted diplomatic action. Free agents. Introduce sigfig: You will be rewarded your first 25 dbs for signing up with your sig fig in the faction thread. If you make a build to introduce your sigfig, you can also post it in its own topic, and register it as a freebuild for 10 extra dbs. *If* this build includes licensable property (typically some sort of business) you can further license it for future income. (If you have the money) Free licenses You start out your time in BoBS with one free small property license (tip: don't use it for a residence, as those have lower costs and yields than other types), and a free license for a class 2 vessel of any kind. Taking advantages of these can be the start of a great fortune! (Believe me, I know what I am talking about! ) Mini-challenges & contracts From time to time, factions, players, or organisations will host mini-challenges with a varying set of rewards. These are great for inspiration, making extra money, or gaining other advantages. Further, some players or settlements have open contracts for buildings, ships, or anything else that they need someone to do, and sometimes these pay well. So keep you eyes open - perhaps something opens up that will interest you. Main challenges The overall story in BoBS is propelled by the main challenges (and supported by inter-faction and inter-player stories). These challenges are run several times per year, and offer great rewards for the winners, as well as rewards for all participants, and the factions. (Check out Challenge IV for an idea of what the challenges look like). Tell your story, Have fun & Ask questions A lot of the above is about the economic game system (EGS) but what really matters is to have fun. Tell your stories, play the EGS, build what you are inspired to build, weave your story into the overall lore, and cooperated with other builders and factions. And most importantly: HAVE FUN! BoBS is a freeform game, and while you can "play the main quests", you are also more than welcome to explore the world your way, and in your pace. The EGS is there to give an additional layer of fun and inspiration, but it is not necessary for you to participate. And you may also decide to participate at a later date. Lastly, we like to think we are a helpful community, so feel free to ask questions - there is no such thing as a stupid question! Hope this was helpful! Looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

Mini-Challenge: The Grand Road of Nellisa
Bregir replied to Elostirion's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Hmm, very interesting and innovative take on royal properties, Elos! I will see if I can push at least one entry in (although there are many minichallenges currently, and I still have plenty of my own projects too... ) Further, Montoya or the Royal Society might be interested in sponsoring a minichallenge. (And I will definitely steal some of this for future minichallenges. )- 42 replies

Her Royal Majesty's Winged Cuirassiers have arrived in King's Harbour: @gedren_y: A swordsmen's club sounds like a great addition to King's Harbour. Currently, the governor himself is underway to Quinnsville, so it would make perfect sense for some other official to receive her.- 77 replies
