Now, how is this crane better than 42009? I think that for lifting the boom of a crane, linear actuators are better, because they don't rely on air, which is a compressible fluid. Furthermore, 42009 looks much better because of the fact that it has a smoother, and less gap ridden body.

Metal Gears

Oh yeah, those too. I've never broken one only because of the fact that I don't use 'em.- 32 replies

Metal Gears
Saberwing40k replied to The Ghost Racer's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
What gears are you breaking? The only gears I've ever broken are 1 8t gear, and one 12t gear. Anything else breaking is kind of ridiculous.- 32 replies

That's beside the point. They said that they'd release the motors on X date, and have failed to do so. But, I gave up looking a loooonnnng time ago. It simply ain't worth my time.

Custom parts
Saberwing40k replied to AKM_76's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
So, what purpose does this serve? As you showed, the 42000 hubs already work like that. Is there something more to the turntables that makes that design better? Anyway, I personally don't mod parts. If I were to, I'd make sure that they were, A.) Repeatable easily, B.) Versatile. (I would never glue parts for that reason.) and C.) not available. Although, I have made some parts out of non Lego materials, like the string in my crane. -
I think Lego could easily do some flagship sets in the 5000 parts range. What, they had a UCS model that size, so why not a technic one? Any problem with structure and stuff can be solved with clever engineering. However, I also think that they should work on wringing out the most functions from parts count. Case in point: I liked the models from the '90s in that they had the mechanisms on full display, with only a minimal shell. Doing something like that today would leave many more parts for functions.

Well, Well, most of the time the service has been excellent. SOMEBODY, somewhere, down the line dropped the ball, on this issue. I mean, TLG has never pushed back the release date on a set, right? This is unusual, and frustrating, I know. But it is of little use for us to get mad over it. The only thing we can do is keep asking, firmly but politely, and wait.

Hmm, you could maybe use a planetary transmission for this purpose. I've also built a transmission that works similar to ratcheting boxes, and does not use driving rings. On the other hand, why do you even need the gearbox in the first place? I mean, sure, a 4 speed gearbox would be good, but why 5 with reverse? A reverse gear is just more complication, and for what? You have electric motors, that can be reversed at any time, so unless you're going for realism, there's no reason for it to be in there. XL motors can destroy gears, but not in applications like this. Sheepo's gearboxes should be what you need.

MASTER
Saberwing40k replied to NORAN's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I've thought about this, but I've never seen anyone actually build a system like this. Thing is, as you mentioned, it is inherently inaccurate due to the pf motors. -
Garbage Truck Flagship
Saberwing40k replied to Kumbbl's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
How about something like this as a super flagship? My big problem is that most of the vehicles that Lego hasn't done are either really obscure, not playable, or not cool looking. There's only so many vehicles that you can do that appeal to the demographic. -

Garbage Truck Flagship
Saberwing40k replied to Kumbbl's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
C'mon, a garbage truck? Surely we can do better than that, right? A fire engine might be good, but there's other stuff out there that would be cool. Like say, a Feller- Buncher? I can think of many other vehicles I'd like to see as a flagship. Examples: Case CX800 Demolition Excavator: Before you all cry out that it'd be just another 8043, this thing has swappable booms, a telescopic boom, and variable geometry tracks. Also, doesn't this thing look mean? A good B model might be a regular excavator, or a bulldozer. Vermeer T1255 Terrain Leveler Oh yeah, this is awesome. It could be made so that all you'd do is spread some bricks in front of it, and it'd scoop up by remote control. Fun, and practical! For more mining vehicles, I'd like to see stuff like roadheaders, in tunnel excavators, rope shovels, and maybe some blasthole drills. And maybe a grader too. Since y'all want a cement mixer, I'd go for this: Oshkosh S-Series Front Discharge Mixer - 6 axle But my top model is probably this: MAN TGX XXL SLT + Goldhofer Modules with Girder Frame It's a really big special transport truck, made for hauling electrical equipment. All of these are cool, right? And unusual, right? Anyway, I could go at this all day, given all the stuff I find at cranesetc.co.uk, a site that reviews models like this. The same site is also where I got all the pictures. Go there, you may find inspiration for a new project. -
I'm getting one as the top 100, and I'm going to build it like any other set. I mean, it's something that's meant to be built, right? I'm probably not going to get another, as I want 42009 more than a duplicate crawler.

Aaannd it's the 1st of July, at least for me, and no show for the motors. However, bizarrely, the site does not list any of the individual elements. What's going on here?

ASK HERE MOC-stuck? Ask for general building advice here!
Saberwing40k replied to mrklaw's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Now, this suggestion may be weirder, but if you have any technic/bionicle tanks, those would make some spiffy targets. Other than that, they're kind of single purpose parts, at least as far as that term works. -
Since each has a serial number that's unique, here's some I'd like to see reported: #001-009 #404 #666 #616 #108 #777 #682 Any number with repeating digits. #013 #888 And, if we have more than 3 digits, let's go for: #1337 #9000

Sport car "Calypso"
Saberwing40k replied to W0lF's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Very nice, shape is clean and aerodynamic, functions are well thought out, and the rhotuka spinner wheels are brilliant! -
I've read about a project similar to this in Robot magazine. The guy that made that robot simply made a lever to open the fridge. I think that this robot should do something a little bit different, and that is start by the side of the fridge, and pull the door out by moving sideways. Also, while you're at it, you should make the robot pour the beer too.

Pendular shock absorbers
Saberwing40k replied to Junpei's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Thing is, with pendular suspension, you're not supposed to even need shock absorbers. The purpose of pendular suspension is to ensure that all wheels on the vehicle remain in contact with the ground. Jennifer Clark explains it in her post on her mobile crane. Most 4 wheeled vehicles with pendular suspension only have one axle moving, and the other one fixed. However, there is a method of making with two pendular axles stable. I can't deeplink it right now, dunno why, just look through Mahjqa's Brickshelf gallery. I can tell you that it links the first axle to the second, such that as the front left wheel goes up, the back left one goes down.- 2 replies

I'm kind of wondering why you decided to use AAA battery boxes. I mean, the AA boxes provide more power, and for longer. I'm also more than a little bit baffled by your decision to only use 1:1 gearing in them portal axles. And lastly, your truck is going to look absolutely preposterous, due to it being far, far wider than it should be in relation to the wheels and wheel bases. I'd say just make this a skid steer custom six by six, and ditch the Tatra angle entirely. Or make it chibi.
