Well, I can understand not wanting to spend money to make money. But, it would indeed be quite efficient to just order a few such parts next time you buy online, as it could improve the colour consistency a little

[ENTRY] [SMALL] The Child - Steve's childhood
Horation replied to MyFirstMOC-Hun's topic in Pirate MOCs
The jagged plates on the beach. Look at your beach again, if you do you'll notice the shape is not the smoothest to say the least. YellowFrog was just saying he finds the beach jagged and a little disjointed, I wrote my comment for him, as a reply to his observation. I also wrote it for you, so that you may perhaps improve your techniques a little. -
[ENTRY][SMALL] International Society of Steve
Horation replied to BrynnOfCastlegate's topic in Pirate MOCs
I have more than one Star wars set where the figures are now worth several times the original retail price... But yeah, best price for Lego is winning it in a contest (though there's not much to compare to with the feeling of paying with hard-earned cash). -
[ENTRY] [SMALL] The Child - Steve's childhood
Horation replied to MyFirstMOC-Hun's topic in Pirate MOCs
That's a recurring issue with your builds MyFirstMOC, I'd note that down for any future design of mine if I were you. But it's not as big of a deal here than in some of your larger builds, since you do have a limited parts budget to work with. -
[POLL] Which Prizes Do You Find Most Enticing?
Horation replied to Mister Phes's topic in LEGO Pirates
I can't say-my boss would fire me! That's a joke, independent contracting is a pathway to abilities many would consider...unnatural. I am now at 76 replies, or 24 away from the target. -
Well, the first modern wargame (Little Wars by H.G. wells, yes that H.G. Wells) involved shooting toy cannons at enemy formations as an actual rule, so it's not that far fetched. I'll admit me and my brother mostly used dice to determine combat result, even at a younger age (he pushed me to use dice since he was a fair bit older than me).

[ENTRY] [LARGE] Escape from the Imperial Trading Post
Horation replied to A_Goodman's topic in Pirate MOCs
Well, then either remove it or expand the MOC to include the rest of the trading post (kidding). In all seriousness, I have to agree with @Autumn here, add some fire here and there to make it seem more chaotic (or use my prior suggestion for ice cream pieces). -
I concur, a few pieces of string would help a lot. Then again, speaking from experience, I know strings and software just don't go together.

Well that's a shame, I've also never done it (there's only one, but it's too far for me to go there regularly). In all seriousness, I now see a slight curve in the whole build, is this an illusion or is the build indeed slightly curved? I mean, it makes no difference to any voter looking at it for a minute or two, it's just to know, since I've looked at it a fair amount of time and I just noticed.

I can see where you are coming from, it's indeed kind of distracting. But I'd much rather see some retiling than the removal of a part of the build. -
[POLL] Which Prizes Do You Find Most Enticing?
Horation replied to Mister Phes's topic in LEGO Pirates
Latest update : @Math Wizard has elected to claim the 50 euro prize. Congratulations! (as of 2026 EST he's at 51 replies as critic). -
Well it's quite obvious from looking at it that it's two 6x6 plates, and since you need two 32x32 baseplates to replicate the original... However, it's approximate, and I'll scale up/down depending on the element to improve visibility.

[ENTRY][SMALL] RAFT: The King’s Merchant + Comic book
Horation replied to Marooned Marin's topic in Pirate MOCs
Well, I feel like it's a rather good compromise you are offering. I'm personally ok with it, but I'm open to discussing it with the others. -
[ENTRY][SMALL] Steve's Arrival in Port Royal
Horation replied to Captain Braunsfeld's topic in Pirate MOCs
Yeah, there's no need to break the bank and buy a whole new fig just for a contest. So I'm quite glad to see such variety, but I'm still glad to see you found that Steve fig! -
Indeed, the lack of a story is disappointing, in fact @lotr hasn't commented at all since they posted this entry. Where are you? Can you communicate with us? I'd love to hear from the creator of this fine build instead of discussing with the other critics.

[ENTRY][LARGE] Steve's Treasure Hunt
Horation replied to KolonialbeamterdeMartinez's topic in Pirate MOCs
I hadn't even realised those parts were mop heads! They truly looked like some vegetation pieces. Good eye, Sir! -
[ENTRY][SMALL] Infamous Steve and the Fountain of Fortune
Horation replied to Juhlhaus's topic in Pirate MOCs
This head looks more interesting than the original one. Not that the original one is boring, but modern Lego just looks better, and I'm surprised you of all people disagree (since you've yourself said that the 80s/90s nostalgia is not as much of a factor in your decisions). -
[ENTRY][LARGE] Steve's Treasure Hunt
Horation replied to KolonialbeamterdeMartinez's topic in Pirate MOCs
Yes, a lovely idea, it wouldn't even take too long to be made a little larger. And it would allow for more tiny details. -
[ENTRY][LARGE] Origin of Steve the Merchant
Horation replied to SevenDeadlyStreamers's topic in Pirate MOCs
Yeah, that sounds like an easy improvement I'd have to support. It would give you a bit of an edge on the previous version of the build. -
Not so quick @YellowFrog, this is a Lego contest, and one should prioritise using Lego elements as a result. In other words, I don't see the problem with using a stand like this one, even if a non-Lego option would perhaps be slightly better.

[ENTRY][LARGE] The Merchant vessel Margaret Hamilton (More pics!)
Horation replied to Elephant Knight's topic in Pirate MOCs
Does it have fewer than 3 000 pieces? That would be an even bigger concern I think than the similarity to Barracuda bay. -
I feel like having some variety can't hurt. Especially when we remember that builds with more colour variety will pop out more to the voting audience

Latest update, as of 0855 EST, August 5th @Math Wizard 44 26.5% (-6.3%) Me 60 36.1% (-1.2%) @SevenDeadlyStreamers 3 1.8% (-0.4%) @Autumn 11 6.6% (+0.6%) @YellowFrog 48 28.9% (+7.3%) Who shall get to 50 first, Math Wizard, or YellowFrog? -
It is either a) a flag design/decoration that the author put in there for improving the looks or b) intended to be a part of the platform the ship's lookout stands on
