That's quite true, and it's also got a lot of nice part usage. I especially like the way the net/tile intermixing creates such a credible water flow.

[ENTRY][SMALL] Mini Imperial Trading Post
Horation replied to SevenDeadlyStreamers's topic in Pirate MOCs
@Math Wizard, I've tried to but it's very challenging. Otherwise, one trick is to scale down the stickered minifigs, or use a sideways tile embedded sideways between two plates (which IS a Legal technique). -
Good grief! That's a funky build, I guess I quite like the idea of a giant murderous crab, it's my kind of ridiculous. However, I concur with @Murdoch17, and I'm not sure this is even a valid entry : all the elements are just modified Lego or Knock-Off sets.

Well, thank you for that valuable information you provided. I couldn't have made it this good alone.
-
Well, that's a pair of fine builds as well, they are both quite Victorian in style! I do hope this Overseer of yours won't stand in the path of Steve.
-
No, I shall stand with the light! Arguably, the big one is a little strange compared to the others, perhaps it is because there's an officer hiding inside?

[ENTRY][LARGE] Steve's Treasure Hunt
Horation replied to KolonialbeamterdeMartinez's topic in Pirate MOCs
@Math Wizard, yeah, I do think that dark grey would look quite good around this build. Even more so if it would be too complicated to make a CGI forest background, this would be a fine compromise -
That's a really good trick, and I can't complain. Since you have indeed put quite a bit of effort into creating a credible backstory behind it all.
-
@Math Wizard, agreed about the base layer. I'll make an update within the hour, it should have : new flag facings, new poster and an updated base layer.

[ENTRY] [LARGE] Escape from the Imperial Trading Post

Well, I get it, it's much easier to remove parts when they're digital. Then again, you could do it segment by segment and update it every while and then, that might encourage a few more replies (which could net you a prize). -
Agreed! It would be nice to provide competition to @Elephant Knight's design. Alternatively, maybe a small or digital entry telling us the aftermath of Steve's perilous situation.

If it makes you feel any better, I also saw a Scottish reference where there was none (in an entry by @Math Wizard, I assumed Kirk referred to Scottish for Church). I guess it's us wishing for more Scotland than there really is out there? -
[ENTRY][LARGE] Origin of Steve the Merchant

The vegetation does indeed looks great. So I have to ask, are you planning to use those skills for a final entry? -
[ENTRY][SMALL] Mini Imperial Trading Post
Horation replied to SevenDeadlyStreamers's topic in Pirate MOCs
Yeah, that's the downside of these "mini-minifigures" (as I now realise after doing it in one of my own entries), but in the end I still feel like they're worth it, at least in this case. Now everyone is talking about the gryffindor tile, but there's something I want to mention : the cranes, I don't even recognise all the pieces used to make them, care to enlighten me? And I now see we both made our palm trees in the same way, I genuinely didn't do it consciously, but I should at least mention that this build served as inspiration in such a way. -
The edges look fine, at least in the final pic, and I sure can't claim that my builds don't use such tricks for improving the presentation. And the depth behind the build is a strength, as it makes it feel like we're seeing a snapshot of a massive fortress where the terrible imperials keep him in jail.

[ENTRY][SMALL] Steve meets Cap’n Tongs!
Horation replied to SevenDeadlyStreamers's topic in Pirate MOCs
Agreed @Autumn , too few studs and it would look like a cheap chinese toy! And I think you are correct about the plate containing food's inconveniencing position, and I do think it would look a little better if it were centered correctly. -
[ENTRY][SMALL] Infamous Steve and the Fountain of Fortune
Horation replied to Juhlhaus's topic in Pirate MOCs
The background is indeed something I didn't touch on, it looks "cartoony" but in a really good way, since it makes the detailed and semi-realistic island pop out well. And while I'm at it, glad to see someone who found a nice hairpiece for Steve, it looks like he's a coureur des bois (lumberjacks) from 19th century New France. -
I'm starting to be swayed by the arguments related to the dark water ; it does look better after some reflection. I actually quite like the palm trees ; they remind me of official Lego sets a little.

[ENTRY] [LARGE] - Steve's Upgraded Cutter (The Untold Story)
Horation replied to Andy-Roo's topic in Pirate MOCs
That's one part where I have to politely disagree, Captain Crit. The cluttered feel looks accurate for a merchant vessel seeking to maximise its load for every trip (so as to increase profits!). And I focused on the interior in my critique, but that outside looks brilliant I must say. -
Now I can't unsee it, this isn't the flying dutchman, it's the flying hungarian! Blue would do much to improve it, then again, focus on finishing any of your remaining entries before fixing presentation, since that's what most people look at first.
-
That trans-blue parts idea is a great one, and I have to second it! And I do agree that the irregular shape is quite impressive, this is a really underrated and undercommented-on build, hopefully that'll now change!
-
Yeah, that holed paper looks a little too strange, it's easily fixed by adding a blank sheet underneath, so no worries there. And I absolutely agree that the dock is too clean, I think that by now you have enough suggestions to "fix" the docks.

I think consistency is key, so either replace some of those plates with tiles, or some of those tiles with plates. Alternatively, you can go with my suggestion and make the water look "broken" with some waves using cheese slopes. -
[ENTRY][LARGE] The Merchant vessel Margaret Hamilton (More pics!)
Horation replied to Elephant Knight's topic in Pirate MOCs
I quite like the interior, and I actually think that the use studs inside makes it feel more lived in , since we'd expect the inside to be for the crew (hence, no need to advertise to the harbour commander that the ship is clean). But yeah, add a parrot or a monkey (but I get it if you've got too little of budget leftover, I saw those two goats!). -
[ENTRY][LARGE] Steve's Treasure Hunt
Horation replied to KolonialbeamterdeMartinez's topic in Pirate MOCs
I feel like that's a fair point you make @Math Wizard, if the creator intertwined the stanzas and small vignette pics, it would really add to the atmosphere of the build, and I think it would add quite a lot of value to this entry. I also now realize how much dark you used to create a feeling of the unknown ; you used dark green and grey along with a black base to set the tone effectively.
