This reads like an SCP file, I have to say it's the goofiest build to date. It is chock full of funny or interesting details, and while I'd normally write a full review, I'm just too tired to do so right now. I will critique one thing, in the chopping room, there's no red or blood anywhere, and considering the topic, that feels like a missed opportunity. Also, @Mister Phes, I believe I have reached my 100th post, care to confirm?

That sounds like a great idea, a contest should never be the end for a MOC. I would say replace a few tiles with slopes (one tile per slope, so it stays at 200) and that should be that, albeit do of course consider simply reorienting some tiles so as to break the grid pattern
-
@Autumn , I agree about the jagged railing. I would fix that by replacing those pieces with a single plate put at an angle, if possible. @YellowFrog, as a proud Canadian, I have to agree that no one cares about the remaining bits of the continent.
-
Hum, I quite like that studded "carvings" idea @Autumn . Simplicity is essential, but one must be careful, or else it loses out on detailing.

Yeah, I'll admit that without an etension we'll see fewer entries than last year. As for the stand, if you want it very Lego style, maybe print some sort of nametag and glue it/scotchtape it. (Though it's really not necessary)
-
@Marooned Marin putting an effort to make a physical entry is always appreciated, even if there's a theoretical better result from an infinite supply of parts. You said that the Steve figure can be made for real parts? As always you make figures that look custom even when they're made from real parts. As for the rocks, it's your MOC, so if you end up disliking the alternative, keep it as it is (to quote @BardDandelion "builds should be decided by the creator, not by comittee"), and you have a point in your favour in the fact that real-life rocks sometimes are rounded due to water erosion, so it's not a dealbreaker by any standard. Always appreciate it when builders even take the time to reply to critics, irregardless of the final decision.
-
You can be "damnit critical" if you want, but I feel like the edges are fine. But if you want to be grasping at straws with such a good entry. At least do critique other entries, too.

White light is perhaps best for MOC pictures, but it isn't as good for most other things. Personally, yellow looks a little old-timey so it seems best for historical MOCs.

[ENTRY][LARGE] The Merchant vessel Margaret Hamilton (More pics!)
Horation replied to Elephant Knight's topic in Pirate MOCs
Indeed, the name matters, as it sets the theme behind the build. "Roman" feels a little more modern as a name, while Hamilton sounds British to me so I have to agree with you. -
[ENTRY] [LARGE] - Steve's Upgraded Cutter (The Untold Story)
Horation replied to Andy-Roo's topic in Pirate MOCs
Always fun to see some behind-the-scenes pictures from the entrants! I have to say, that sounds like a pretty cost-effective background for pirate builds, I might steal that trick in the future. -
[ENTRY] [SMALL] The Child - Steve's childhood
Horation replied to MyFirstMOC-Hun's topic in Pirate MOCs
@MyFirstMOC-Hun. some suggestions have already been made, but I'll give you one of mine. You could use some of those rounded pieces Lego uses for their beach builds (like in 10320). -
Yeah, plus I'm not even sure how I'd build a shark fin with tiles. In the end, it's unlikely that such tiny differences will be what decides the vote for 1st place.

[ENTRY] [LARGE] - Steve's Upgraded Cutter (The Untold Story)
Horation replied to Andy-Roo's topic in Pirate MOCs
I believe this is an edited background, since I've seen similar ones for digital builds. But I could be wrong, we'll have to ask @Andy-Roo how he made it. -
I'd be curious to know what it looks like when it is split it two. Do you have even a quick render available?

[ENTRY][SMALL] Infamous Steve and the Fountain of Fortune
Horation replied to Juhlhaus's topic in Pirate MOCs
Fair point @BardDandelion, this entry is one of only a couple in the whole contest that make use of such methods for forced perspective. It adds some much needed variety, especially when this is the 30th build I have to critique. -
Well that was a good stylistic choice MyFirstMOC! I am always happy to see users making MOCs with parts limitations. It's much nicer than merely using all the colours that exist like most folks using digital designs do.
-
I went to the entries index, and when I click on this entry`s picture, it works just fine. Maybe it has since been fixed? Speaking of the sail, I quite like the fact that it is red and not white like every other MOC ever.

Good grief! I forgot how big Australia is! I mean Canada is bigger, but we don't have cities that are that spread out. It's mostly Toronto, Montréal and then a few people everywhere else...

[POLL] Which Prizes Do You Find Most Enticing?
Horation replied to Mister Phes's topic in LEGO Pirates
Noted @Mister Phes, all my posts were reviewed for punctuation. Here's the latest update : Me : 82 : 41% Yellow Frog : 70 : 35% BardDandelion : 22 : 11% Autumn : 21 :10.5% 7DeadlyStreamers : 5 : 2.5% Nota bene : these are estimates and I ain't responsible for any errors in the count, the organizers have final say in any contest matter, and I'm a contestant, so you should consider me to be a biased source (even though I try not to be). -
I know, I just like to make improvements to encourage discussion, especially since I feel quite inexperienced. But I always have the final say, and in many cases I was always planning to make the change, so don't worry too much about it.

I feel like there's a ton of lovely details in here, the prison cell is well designed, as is the treasure and the modular design. I have two nitpicks, though. First, the figures should all be yellow-skinned or all be real-life-skin-coloured, it looks weird when they are in several inconsistent colours. Second, there are too many curved pieces in the rockwork, which doesn't work with the slopes, I would focus on consistency once again. But the build looks awesome, and the vegetation is a fine example of islander MOCing, it looks just like an actual jungle, which is reminiscent of old timey sets.
-
You know what, @BardDandelion, since there seems to be a lot of proposals for this MOC. I'll make two versions, and I will let you critics guide my decision.
-
@YellowFrog, we could ask the author what their next entry will be about? Hopefully it'll involve a larger area, since that's perhaps the one "flaw" of this build ; it is quite cramped, even if that is the intention and even if it does give out the best result possible.

[ENTRY][SMALL] Mini Imperial Trading Post
Horation replied to SevenDeadlyStreamers's topic in Pirate MOCs
Well, that's much better than my scaled down version of enchanted island, it used over 100 parts vs 400 for the orginial, so 25%, and yours looks much closer to the original, too! I can only suggest merging plates and bricks where applicable to reduce part count. since that seems like a tough problem for anyone working on micros (including SevenDeadlyStreamers's next build. -
Yeah, that's why I'm thinking of redesigning the build around a standard brick wall. This would require a slight redesign of the support for the slope, but I feel like it's an appropriate measure. Is that your preferred option?
