[APP] BrickController2
amorti replied to imurvai's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I'm thinking of improving the max distance from the phone to the model rather than the phone to the gamepad. I've just been looking into it, and it seems that our Samsung A5 has Bluetooth 4, while some new phones have Bluetooth 5 which has 4x the range. That should make a big difference in playability. This wish is because I've found when my Greyhound model gets out of buwizz range it takes a split second for the boxes to realise and switch off all the motors. At Fast or Ludicrous speeds a lot can happen in that moment and my model ended up falling off a drop.- 1,316 replies

Good suggestion but I think that would detract from the fun if I had to have a cable from the pad, to my phone in my pocket. Since the phone is nearing end of life anyway, maybe someone has a suggestion of a Samsung phone which has stronger Bluetooth range? Idk if that's even a thing...- 1,316 replies

Thanks, good to know about the issue with the same model of phone. I've been looking at getting a new one anyway since the battery on mine is getting to the end of its life and it won't be possible to change it while keeping the phone waterproof. I'll probably get the equivalent new Samsung with later Android version. @iuliand I was thinking playstation controller rather than Xbox as the last console I had was a PS1, so at least it will be a little familiar in the hand. Does it matter if it's an OEM Sony pad or a replica? I would guess replicas cost a lot less. I'm not too worried about compatibility with Android games, I'm way too old for Minecraft. Maybe that can be my next big Amazon order, new phone and PS4 controller.- 1,316 replies

Woah... Looks like I'm late to the party and it's 34 pages long. Few questions if I may: I don't have a playstation etc so would have to buy a controller, is any gamepad in particular best for this app? I'm only really looking to drive cars so two analogue sticks would do it. I don't want excessive buttons. I'd want it to control one or two buwizz and a 42099 hub. Can you switch buwizz speed modes on the control? Do you get any extra speed from the Lego hub? I have a Samsung A5 2017 on Android 8.0 if it matters. Thanks.. off to read up now- 1,316 replies

I can't believe this is the first I know of this... Robot wars (UK) and Lego are two of my favourite things! I went to a live robot wars show last year, epic :)

My first Technic
amorti replied to discoburg's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Welcome to the forum. I bought that one on special, built it, and sold it almost immediately. For me it's too much form, not enough function. But it sold well enough so some people must like it. Enjoy the build! -
Cool! Are there Lego battlebot battles? Or is it just for parading?

[TC18] [C MODEL] Trophy Truck
amorti replied to blaz62's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
In the instructions step 25 shows the pieces which are occupying the same space. Look closely, you'll see they overlap in the drawing. -
[TC18] [C MODEL] Trophy Truck
amorti replied to blaz62's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Thanks. Well done fixing the instructions quickly. What you've changed makes it a proper C models and makes it easier to construct, too. You can see the collision in step 25. I guess there had to be compromises but I'm still not convinced by that front end. When you steer you can see it trying to pull out the black pins in the steering rack because of the collision, this adds friction and it doesn't work nice. Did you try using shorter 2L connector pieces to catch the front of the torsion bars? Might not collide then, maybe. Idk and I already took it apart, it's not one for me. -
If you use a buwizz you could set the power curve to only use the first 7 or 9 of the 15 positions the servo can manage. If you want to do it using only Lego digital remotes... IDK what's possible in the space you've got left. Either you'd have to figure how to gear the servo down by half. Or can you use a smaller gear on the steering rack?

[TC18] [C MODEL] Trophy Truck
amorti replied to blaz62's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Alright, let's go with that instead. Anyone looking for a C-model for 42093 has ample choice with Grohl's series of free C-models which all look good, can be built with no extra parts, and actually work. Even if like me you're curious as to how he got suspension (spoiler alert - axles in tension and colliding parts) I recommend to give this one a swerve. -
[TC18] [C MODEL] Trophy Truck
amorti replied to blaz62's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Did you read my post? I have two issues with the model: it's mis-described as a C-model. I raise this as an invitation to the designer to correct the parts list on rebrickable, which is incorrect and shows no extra parts required. There shouldn't be risks as you describe, because the parts list on rebrickable should be correct. it's janky, and not worth the premium tag. -

amorti replied to blaz62's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Of course I do. But if you want to call it a C-model, you only get to use the pieces in the kit. -

amorti replied to blaz62's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Finished now: This isn't a legit C-model: Step 15 shows 6x 6632 in black - the kit only contains 4x. You've also used an extra 2L axle. The steering and suspension collide, Neither works properly. The whole thing is wobbly as well as ugly. Feel free to refund the 4,50€ I paid you -

So I'm only part way through but this model has issues already: Step 15 shows 6x 6632 in black - the kit only contains 4x. Step 25 already shows there's an illegal build here: the wishbones and steering rack are occupying the same spot. -

Brilliant! Can't believe you got such a nice suspension action with zero suspension parts. I'll have a go with the instructions today. -
MOCs vs Official Sets
amorti replied to nerdsforprez's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
+1 I am English but I also speak German. I got back into Lego right around the time held der steine got out of Lego (!) Interesting to hear your opinion, as a very respected MOCer, on this subject. I've built a couple of your MOCs, as you know in probably more detail than you needed. If anyone in the forum gets to measure his own work up against TLG... I believe it's you. You're a stickler for legal connections, legal builds, and everything else that TLG is constrained by. Nonetheless you took the same pieces in Rocky and built something TLG couldn't have done. Greyhound is a different case... It is too hard on the front universal joints and rear bevel gears to be sold by TLG, but idgas: the whole build is genuinely fun and the model is awesome to play with and it got right under my skin to mod and play with. Both instructions include steps to get pieces into places that normally you'd think wasn't possible, and when you realise what's going on there's a real buzz in how it's done. Thanks again for that, D. -
U-joint torque
amorti replied to LinneaPinnea's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
"Not much" It'll depend on how the suspension and steering are built as to what angles you're asking the joints to work at, as well as how much torque is being put through them. Build it and see how you go. If no good, try rebuilding with the CV joints from 42099 which will wear but not fail catastrophically. If that's no good, consider RC universal joints. You can get joints for a 4mm shaft which have just under 8mm outer diameter and just under 24mm length = a close match for Lego. Drill them to 4.8mm and you're good to go. -
The specific sets I mentioned are "clone or competitor" brands. MouldKing has largely been a knock-off brand it's true, of MOCs rather than TLG sets. This kit though, seems to be a clone kit rather than a knock-off. Either way, I'm out of this thread. It's clear I'm skating on thin ice so I'll quit while I'm ahead (or at least, not banned yet).

As far as I know they aren't part of the same company. They definitely don't use the same pieces. L's Technic pieces are largely junk, the worst of the chinabrick companies'. Mk use pieces from gobricks, which are close to TLG pieces. Best not try their linear actuators though. If the eurobricks site is in some way sponsored by TLG then fair enough to exclude other options. If it's excluding other options out of some sense of loyalty to TLG then that's another thing, but if it's simply policed by TLG fan boys then that's another thing again. At the header it says "uniting Technic fans", it doesn't say Lego. So I guess even if the forum endorses Lego, TLG don't endorse the forum. It says something on its own.
