This has a lot of neat details, but I agree about it not being a modified version of the Bike shop/cafe set. This has very little in common with that set, so I would retitle this to Bike Shop MOC. Although it has little resemblance to the official set, I like what you've done with most of it. I really like the deep setback of the doorway of the Bike shop. It really opens up the MOC. Some streets seem too much the same distance away from the sidewalk (I know that is something I've had issues with), so that is a welcome change. I may have to consider doing something like that in the future. Maybe with my Toy Shop MOC from the creator set. I agree about changing the color a bit. Why one floor green and the other blue? But otherwise I like the build.

I like it...and I don't. There is definitely a lot of appeal to it, but something seems off. I don't know what. I do like the scale. It works well with the poles to the batcave, for MOC purposes. The cave itself has a lot of neat features of course. I like the idea of having the house above the cave, instead of how the official set is, so if I ever pick it up I will definitely be MOCing it myself. I had an idea involving a hinged opening system. But mainly because I don't have a lot of display space to keep something large open all of the time. The house looks pretty solid overall. I don't love the grassy hill or the rockwork. It seems too busy/less natural. But just one man's opinion. I bet this will do well at LEGO shows/conventions if you were to take it. Keep up the good work.

I think it has always been like that. You have to read the splash page before buying anything because each seller is different and have different requirements. I find a store with pieces I want, I immediately go to the splash page to see if I can even shop at that store, or I keep looking. It can be unfortunate at times, but I assume they have a reason for why they do business that way.

[MOC] The Hateful 8 -Minnie's Haberdashery
TheLegoDr replied to Fletcher Floyd's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
Update: I watched the movie last weekend. Definitely entertaining, but not my favorite QT movie. Either way, this MOC is spot on! I also would love to see an interior. Granted, just paint the floors red a bit and you should be fine :) -
I understand the humor you were going for. I think the title is misleading in that people might actually be curious on the real cost of LEGO and know where all of the money actually goes....which I don't think LEGO has ever officially released that information, although it would be interesting to know how much of the value is in the art vs brick vs marketing vs etc, etc.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
TheLegoDr replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
I think modern aesthetics are either you love them or hate them. I am not personally a big fan. I love the historic look/feel of these other Modulars and historic downtowns in cities across the land. Obviously, if the designer does a good job with it, I will buy it, even if that means I will have to modify it (which I have been doing with all of them anyway lately). But that is true regarding how Jamie handles things vs other designers. -
Overall, it looks good. Definitely a few minor changes I would personally make for my own city, but it seems to blend in with yours pretty well. I love the white on the upper roofing. Very Dutch. A 12 wide is very tricky to manage. I think overall this works. I do like the brick built garage door.

I would say it is a disservice to fans to only include 5 figures for a set this huge (piece and price wise).... Not that I would necessarily buy it if it had more figures. I don't have $400 to spare to buy GB HQ, not sure how I could afford this also...although I would rather have a castle than a big red building I suppose. I do like the nods to certain movies/moments within the castle, but I don't think I'm a big enough Disney fan to appreciate it. I think I'm more of a castle fan appreciating it. Who knows...

If that is really the set, it looks awesome. Not $400 awesome, but awesome nonetheless. plus I don't need more Mickey/Donald/etc figures, so likely an easy pass.

MOC Maras Outpost- Spacebase, Spacebase, SPACEBASE!
TheLegoDr replied to ZCerberus's topic in LEGO Sci-Fi
Very neat. I am too young for classic space, so I don't have the nostalgia bug for them. But this neo classic space stuff is pretty neat. The greebles look great. All of the little details and differences of the ships, yet they look cohesive enough to be the same group. Very well done. I had always wanted to do a Blacktron 2 MOC/base, my own ships, etc.... but at the same time, I like the idea of creating something new. Although I think neo classic space trumps neo blacktron for some reason. I've seen better MOCs done of neo CS I guess. Maybe not enough people building neo Blacktron. Either way, this is fantastic and the lighting up shot really shows off the control tower. I approve. -
[MOC] The Hateful 8 -Minnie's Haberdashery
TheLegoDr replied to Fletcher Floyd's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
Looks great. I just got the movie from the library today, so hopefully this weekend I will be able to watch it and compare the two. But whether it is accurate or not, it looks great. Good use of snowscape. -
[MOC] Lord of the Rings- Chasing Merry and Pippin
TheLegoDr replied to samiam391's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
Next make an orc chasing them! Fun scene. Great moc. I should build more LOTR mocs. -
I didn't know there were fake wargs..interesting. How do those prices compare to the official versions? Last I checked, the official wargs were not cheap.
-
I'm not surprised it is sold out. The promo has been going for over a week already. Figures don't usually last too long, especially a nostalgic figure like this. Either way, I'm excited to open mine. I have it sitting in a box with the other stuff I ordered. I haven't opened the outer box yet to make sure all of my contents are there yet. Hopefully everything is safe. I had no idea on two shields! That is amazing. I can't wait to have an extra then.

Poor Wun Wun...although this giant is much larger and could do so much more damage. Yet, why do giants never have actual weapons? Just think of the possibilities! He looks very organic for brick built. I like how it blends together. Nice job on the addition of blood/wounds on the giant.

It was us who was wanting a caravan... Definitely top notch. The color scheme works really well here. Are those just 1x2 jumper plates stacked to give that ridge effect on the side? Looks great! I agree, the tree could be changed a bit, but it works well for the whole scene. I like them drying some laundry. Seems fitting for those gypsies.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
TheLegoDr replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
I would think at the very least you could start a new block with new buildings OR just make your city blocks even bigger with more non-corner buildings. Either way, not very many people have the space to actually build a full square block, so I don't think that is too much of a worry from TLG's standpoint. If they sell, they will make them. It is a new tradition, so to speak, like the winter village line. Or UCS from star wars. -
I think it would be tough to get into the Modular game this late considering how many have already been produced/retired. If you plan on getting all of the newest ones from here on out, then definitely go with the oldest you can find at MSRP. If you can find a recently retired one for just above msrp, you might be doing okay, but otherwise focus on what is available. If you are only getting neat Modular sets and don't care about collecting them all, I would highly recommend Parisian restaurant. It looks great. Fun build techniques. Great color scheme.

a MISB for a set that routinely goes for $2000 or more, for only $750...something does smell fishy here. With that said, it does seem silly to buy a sealed one and sell off parts to modify it. At $750, keep all of the official parts separate and then modify it yourself. That way if you did decide to resell later you didn't just kill your resale value.

Ugh! I've been wanting to do my own MOC of this building and naturally many have done it before me (and you), but this is outstanding! Very much a Weasley presence here. The roofing technique is great compared to just normal slopes. I don't think I will use light bley, but it works pretty well here. I also had considered just building up the official set a bit better, but then there is a part of me that always wants to go "UCS" and put it in the realm of this MOC. Keep up the good work! I will definitely look at it for inspiration.

I like the dragon being captured. That is very clever idea. I like the idea of Friends battletanks and whatnot. Although I think I am too medieval compared to modern, so I don't think I could justify building one for my layout. I wonder if my daughter would get into having a big scene like this..might be fun for a future show on our end. Granted, I think I'll stick with Elves :). Keep up the good work!

[MOC] Ghostbusters 3 HeadQuarters in Chinese Restaurant
TheLegoDr replied to BaronSat's topic in LEGO Licensed
I love the giant Chinese characters out front. It works really well. I likely won't see the movie, but new sets are always fun. Keep up the good work! -
So that makes sense they are keeping it consistent with the CW series. Although odd at the same time that they are advertising for CW shows. I actually like Arrow, but I've accepted I won't get any of them due to prices. And having the regular character comic based is fine by me.

What is the best surface to build on?
TheLegoDr replied to SevenStuds's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I also just try to build on a table/floor with the munchkin depending...but I try to use another storage container that holds the pieces so they don't fly everywhere. But I prefer hard surfaces. Each time I try to use a semi-soft surface (carpet) it is hard to get the proper return force when trying to push down on bricks. There is too much give and things don't clutch as well as they should. Maybe that's just me. -
Father's Day money to spend...~$270 Big problem is, do I get sets, figures, pieces, or one big set? I am interested in Modulars (need Brick Bank still). I am collecting Super Hero figures (but sometimes it is cheaper to get the set instead of just individual figures). I want the Batcave figures and the batmobile, but I don't think that set is worth $270 (and getting just the figures is almost $200 by themselves). Otherwise I could end up getting multiple figures from the other newer smaller sets and spend the whole lot. Plus, I have MOCs I would like to work on sometime. I like the new Beetle and Big Ben, but since they just came out, I should look into older sets. Does anyone have any input, even specifically about Batcave if it is worthwhile to get as a set. THANK YOU!
