The city needs more pizza. All that dough and cheese makes it hard to poop. There are very few restrooms available, therefore minifgures shouldn't need to poop. Problem solved... In a more serious comment, It seems pizza makes the most sense unless you can get different stickers. Are you wanting it to be food based or retail based? I've considered modifying this as well, but I wanted to use a different pizzeria instead of City Pizza.

Review: 5005358 Minifigure Factory
TheLegoDr replied to mostlytechnic's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Interesting review. I did order sets to get this for free, but I was pretty nonplussed about it. The nanofigs are neat, but I agree on being confused on the inclusion of some of them. I'd prefer a castle nanofig. Looking at it, I really only wanted the Classic Space nanofig, and only because of Benny, so I'm guess I wasted money. I'll likely either keep it sealed (which is pointless) or part it out and trash the box, which is the bulk of the set, so I don't know what to think. Thanks for sharing. My response seems bitter, so I think I'm just over LEGO these days.- 20 replies

Nicely done. Great shaping overall. But I agree, it does oddly resemble Bruce Campbell. But now you know what to do for an Evil Dead bust (if you haven't done one already). The punisher is neat, but there are so many iterations of him now, it's tough to pick one.

I don't care for brickheadz, but I hope they can do his glasses better than robin's from the Batman movie.

My package arrived yesterday. I was not expecting it so quickly! Thank you for running the raffle. I know it is a lot of work. I can't wait to incorporate the new Leia and Han heads into some MOCs.

This was a favorite childhood set of mine. I'm glad I grew up when I did. I would call the late 80s/early 90s a golden era for LEGO for sure. Castle and Pirates were my favorite themes, but Castle always pulled ahead. You had the Crusaders, Forestmen, Black Falcons, Black Knights, and Wolfpack. All great themes with fun builds. But maybe I'm biased. I built a remodeled/updated version of Skull's Eye Schooner a few years ago (I still need to photograph it) and I had a lot of fun making an official set "better." I told myself I wanted to do this more. I wanted to have more fun building instead of stressing out about picking up official sets before they retire. So I decided to go for the River Fortress first. When looking online I came across a few others that have already done this and as inspiring as they were, I definitely saw areas I wanted to change, so I decided to MOC one myself. I hope you all enjoy these photos. I know they aren't the best quality. I only had access to my iPhone 7. Any criticism is welcome. I've already tweaked it a little here and there since taking these photos. And next is to build more groundwork sideways to incorporate more of a forest (and maybe a group of crusaders pulling a cart of gold they can rob). Forestman River Fortress Redux 2017 by TheLegoDr, on Flickr From another angle. Closer look at some of the mushrooms. Nothing too special, but it adds a little something extra. Forestman River Fortress Redux 2017 by TheLegoDr, on Flickr The rear of the building. I took a lot of cues from how I would imagine the official set to look. (and yes, the back does open like the original). Forestman River Fortress Redux 2017 by TheLegoDr, on Flickr Straight on Forestman River Fortress Redux 2017 by TheLegoDr, on Flickr Interior shot. It is like they cut off part of the tree to build around it and it just kept on growing. I want to eventually add more of a small armory and some beds. Forestman River Fortress Redux 2017 by TheLegoDr, on Flickr Upper level Forestman River Fortress Redux 2017 by TheLegoDr, on Flickr Close-up of the front smaller tree. I like how the leaves angle a bit. (And just now looking at the picture, the front hinge should actually be angled down more) Forestman River Fortress Redux 2017 by TheLegoDr, on Flickr And the whole gang. Robin Hood, Maid Marian, Little John, and I assume they would have a pet, why not? Forestman River Fortress Redux 2017 by TheLegoDr, on Flickr I hope this was fun enough to get some good reviews. I enjoyed doing it and I hope to do more like this. Maybe Black Knight's Castle next. Thanks! Oops! It appears I did something wrong. I thought I followed the tutorial correctly, but I'll have to check back when I have more time. I hope you can wait for pictures a tad longer. Edit: Hopefully fixed the picture issue.

How to Design a Modular or a Non-Modular Building?
TheLegoDr replied to LegoModularFan's topic in LEGO Town
I know I wasn't in the list, but I'll throw in a few cents. I have only the one modular posted online made for the Modular Madness contest back in 2012/2013. I didn't have the collection back then so I made do with what I had. Since then, of course, my collection grew. I have looked at more builders (like the many listed above, and others) and felt inspiration for different color schemes, techniques, etc. I have multiple modulars MOC'd that I need to take pictures of still, so hopefully one day I will join the ranks of the other builders in this post. Either way, it boils down to whatever you're comfortable with starting. After reading this list, a lot of builders share similar methods, but also arrive there differently. I am the type that will actually free hand draw it out with where I want details. I'll pencil in how big I expect that space to be. You have to be aware of what pieces you are attempting to draw to know how much space they will take up. The end result isn't a scale drawing by any means, but you at least know how big each section will be to know how it will fit on your starting ground plate. (Plus, I just like drawing buildings. That helps). I'm cheap also. Notoriously cheap. I don't like shopping on bricklink. I try to make do with what I already have, if I can. That certainly limits things, but it can also force you to think a bit outside the box or go with other combinations you weren't originally expecting. In the end, I'll have to order certain elements, but I keep it at a minimum. That alerts me of what colors I may want to use. Do I have any of this color? No? Then I best think about a different combination first. With all of that said, I do have multiple WIPs currently. I should go back to the drawing board, literally.- 93 replies

That is incredible. Kudos to you for doing the research. This is one of those passion projects I wish I could do (as in I wish I had passion enough to create a very realistic creation around something I love). I really like how it is all coming together in digital format. I may have to borrow some of those ideas for future non-SW projects (with credit of course). Looking at that top picture makes me really notice how small Snowspeeders actually are.

Nicely done. I had closet doors like that in my childhood bedroom. I hadn't thought of the creepy factor (although I always kept them open, maybe subconsciously). Is that medium nougat?

I haven't kept up on the leaks or news and I don't want to read an extra 20 pages. But keeping the target audience in mind, they tend to be light on figures for most sets. So a giant castle will likely be a playset, not a display piece, and it might not have as many figures as you'd expect. Either way, I'm pumped for more Potter since the 2010 line is what brought me out of my DA. Although, funds are lower this year, so it will be harder to get all the different themes I want. Oh well..

That looks incredible. An artist always is never happy with their work, so I can understand what you are saying. But from an outside perspective, you nailed it! I haven't ever tried building in this style, so I wouldn't begin to know where to start. Keep up the good work.

Nicely done. I loved spyrius as a kid. I only had a handful of the sets, but the black/red/dark blue color scheme was very different and interesting. This captured the shape of the original pretty well. I like the details you added in to make it more updated. It's hard for me to wrap my head around how to update a previous build. That is my goal from last year, to build updated versions of sets I liked as a kid. I've only done Forestman River Fortress so far, but I hope to do more including some Blacktron II or Ice Planet (and now maybe Spyrius). Keep up the good work.

Well done. I built a little outpost inspired by the originals also (no pics yet), but mine is more "original design" as in slightly updated from official. Yours is very creative and has more originality. So I will definitely look back at this and try to rework mine to make it more updated and my own instead of official designs. Keep up the good work.

Interesting. I like the idea of evolving older childhood sets into something bigger/newer/better. This certainly fits the bill. It's interesting to see how much it looks like a bulkier AT-ST. Either way, it works. It would be neat to see it in real life, but like you said, I don't think some of those combinations exist unfortunately.

I don't recall the hotel being a set, or the saloon. Would be neat to see more angles.

NIcely done. Thank you for posting. I appreciate you hosting the raffle and I'll make sure the figures are in a nice home.

Brilliant! I think I may say that each time I see your builds. I love the snowscape ground work and roofing. I will definitely have to borrow some of that for official Winter Village scene I wanted to set up. The atmosphere seems fitting with the people. Very lively. The contrast between the brown and white looks great. I also love the clocktower.

It is hard to say exactly. Everyone touches on different things. But there is just something about MS that doesn't sit right. It doesn't necessarily have to do with the architecture since the modulars have varied. Even the colors are usually pretty random in the sets, so it isn't that. I definitely don't love the windows. Those stick out more than anything to me. The weathered grill bricks look odd. The market really creates a gap on the side. I don't love the top floor and how they have it situated. It should be overlooking the open side, not the building right next to it (that will inevitably block the view). I DO like the curved front steps, although I don't like the window in the middle between them. I do like the ornamental ironwork with the owl, but the placement does stand out. And after a lot of deliberation, I started to actually like Dutch architecture style (I didn't at first). But with all that said, I never felt compelled to bricklink it. I did bricklink CC and GG (although I have since realized how boring and ugly CC actually is also) and then I start to realize the things I'd want to change in GG (which I did in my own MOC up).

Looking at the actual buildings via google, this is a great translation from a real building. I'd venture to say I prefer the LEGO version more. The colors really pop even though it is gray and brown. Also, I liked the more curved pillared side vs the actual more slanted side. Nicely done. I've always wanted to build a real building into LEGO, but I've never been passionate about any building enough yet. (My LUG has a whole bunch of local landmark buildings).

[PRESS RELEASE] 21313 LEGO Ideas: Ship in a Bottle
TheLegoDr replied to VBBN's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I hate to be too mean since I've never designed anything for LEGO before nor have I ever designed a smaller scale ship. With that I give major kudos to the original designer because the submitted ship was amazing looking (granted it was larger scale). This ship doesn't look like a ship. I do like the printed element on the sail, but the rest I can throw into a parts bin. With that said, the bottle does resemble a bottle better (but again, smaller). The height is over 3 inches tall...I grabbed my ruler. This is going to be tiny on a shelf which is where you would want to put it. I'm disappointed. And I agree with almost 300 of those pieces being trans round plates, the price isn't anything amazing. About average. If it ever comes down in price (which a lot of IDEAS sets have), I may have to look at picking it up though. I'm debating on MOCing my own ship for the bottle OR if I should just try to bricklink the pieces of the bottle and hopefully be cheaper (you never know these days, sometimes it is easier to buy a set instead of individual pieces). EDIT: I wonder if the Black Seas Barracuda from the anniversary set will look okay in the bottle?? That ship looks like a great translation at a small scale. Now it might be worthwhile to pick this up. -
Clever!. Thanks for sharing. And the upload limit is mostly for signature and main picture. It is best to use a photo sharing website for larger files.

Very creative. I don't have the know-how to build at angles. I wish I did. But as creative as the buildings are, those trees are . I've been wanting to build some different angled trees too and these look like good inspiration.
-
Looks great. That is one of the childhood sets I still want to pick up. Although I had the idea of maybe making this and fitting it into Space Police II color scheme. Either way, I really like your updated look. The curved appearance adds a lot to it, while maintaining the original look. I'll have to look at this for inspiration if I ever do anything similar. I've been wanting to build childhood space sets into new/updated versions just like this!
-
I don't know. I don't know how popular the theme has been since the sets have been on a constant clearance. I just heard things and relayed them here. It is a new brand so they would normally have a 2-3 year cycle planned anyway I would imagine. And I didn't know there were prelim photos out there for new sets.

Interesting. I'm from a much smaller area I'm assuming, so I haven't witnessed these. But thanks for the graphic and information! Learning something new every day.
