42108 - Mobile Crane
Rudivdk replied to Ngoc Nguyen's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I actually quite like this set, dispite its 'flaws' (and the lack of a B-model straight from the box), but I can still appreciate the joke with the topic name -

@Cumulonimbus Wish you strength to cope with this loss... but like other members already said: never lose hope and faith, life can bring good things as well. All the best to you and your other half! Regards, Rudi -
@Lipko don't forget two yellow clutchgear extension rings, 1x orange wave selector and some more standard gearbox and suspension bits. Although I have more gearbox and suspension (or actually any kind of) parts than I can ever use in MOCs, it is still a nice parts selection and certainly a good addition to any small/medium LEGO collection.

+1 Got it about a week ago and spent two full evenings building it. Interesting, enjoyable build, with Milan's signature all over it. The way all the gearbox parts are joined together and finally secured to the base frame are next-level stuff. The looks are absolutely stunning, and some interesting techniques are used on the front bodywork to create all the 0.5 stud offsets. Enough has been said about the gears not running so smooth, but overall I think the set is worth it (I have to say that I got it at about 60% of normal MSRP, don't know if I would pay the full monty to be honest...)

Yup, and sometimes they also use letters instead of numbers (S for 5 for example). For some time they even made a logo for certain vehicles in the Technic theme, consisting of a stylized L and T (Lego Technic). Took me some time back then to realize that as well. Also often seen in Technic is the initials of the (main) designer +setnumber as license plate. There are lot of references to be found in sets when looking for it.

After reading through the interview again, I get the feeling that TLG was not fully expecting to buy BL (at least not now). A lot of 'I dont know yet', 'we will have to see' answers are given. And it was stated that buying BL was an 'opportunity', so not a delibarate execution of a business goal? Still don't know if it's good or bad though...

Sorry Jim, I hardly ever venture outside of the Technic forum so I missed that one completely... I guess even TLG business aquisitions count as 'LEGO-related' then? I have to recalibrate my visor, was fixed on actual bricks... -

I read the interview in above linked article, and as I see it this is another move at restricting knockoff and copycat brands/producers. Included in the deal was sohobricks, apparently a producer of LEGO like bricks. So they are know buying knockoff brands opposed to figgting them... And TLG (re)stated that they will not allow war related stuff on any of their assets, including this newly acquired platform, so any modified/custom figs or weapons or anything warfare related will disappear from Bricklink. In the long run I also fear for other custom stuff like metal technic axles, chromed pieces etc. On the other hand, some parts of bricklink are very strong elements for TLG to delve into (what sets/pieces sell well, what sets/pieces could be re-released (now that is easy money...), what pieces in what yet unreleased color do people want etc. etc.). And it gives TLG way better insight in the AFOL world. Let's just hope they won't meddle too much... D*mn, together with all the COPPA fuss this is a bad month for 'the internet'. Reminds me of a REM song: it's the end of the world as we know it... Next purchase: rebrickable...? -

I found it earlier today myself, also ordered the 42110. I just now visited this topic with the idea of posting the opportunity, but you beat me to it. Apparently it is only on sale today (CET) so you have just under 7 hours left to get something for yourselves. -

The corvette has the 3x11 10 hole panels in orange, so no redesign needed. But strangely enough, TLG still hasn't made #5 & #6 panels in orange... unless you meant these to be redesigned... -

True, but at least they are closer in age than us AFOLs... They are already building 7+ and higher sets from for example Ninjago line (containing some Technic structures as well), so I personally hold their opinion as valuable to tje subject. Fortunately my wife does not look at the recommended age on boxes... -

Funny experiment... I showed the line-up to my two sons (6yr & 4yr). The boat is the big ones favorite, the little one choose the crane. The stunt truck + motor got some oohs and aahs as well so that would be the runner up to both of them (flashy colors and flames, doh...). But overall the entire line-up got their approval, so I think TLG did a good job in making this wave for their main target audience. And I have some backup when it comes to convincing my wife to buy them... -
I would try to somehow make the axles through the tan gears a 5.5 long axle so they touch in the middle. You could even put a half bush on both ends, in between the tan gears. The axle on the black gear should not go through the middle of the two tan gears. This should prevent the tan gears from sliding off.

I've seen pics of the development phase of 42056 porsche gt3rs in which they used 3d printed prototype parts and they were grainy like this. Only difference was color white. That was few years ago so I assume they still 3d print their prototypes. Makes good sense instead of making insanely expensive moulds for something that hasn't proven itself 'in the field'.

Hydrofoils and daggerboards (the raising/lowering foils). Link Different question: has any of the annual reviewers heard anything about possible shipping their way or even a review embargo date? Official worldwide sales starts at December 26th, so I think we can expect early stuff popping up in some stores in a few weeks already... -

Nope, but for me it's the outriggers and general shape that makes 42108 more a lookalike/succesor to 8460 than 8053. -

I like that the control knobs are actually knobs, and not just a double bevel gear. This will prevent some sore fingers for sure Edit @Cumulonimbus: telepathy? Same thought same moment...
