Just for clarification, the "B. New Friends" challenge is to create 18 inhabitants of the new land that we discover in "A. Homestead", right? Not 18 minifigs from our lands in the currently-known Historica? That's how I read it, but I just wanted to make sure. And the intent is not to print our own torso prints or anything like that, but to come up with unique and novel combinations of LEGO-issued minifig parts that reflect a new culture, correct? This sounds epic, by the way. I can hardly wait, but I am also glad you have given us some time to work it all out...

[WIP] Avalonian Hamlet: Sylvania
Henjin_Quilones replied to mephistopheles's topic in Guilds of Historica
When I saw it I thought that it must hail from a northerly part of Avalonia, near Mitgardia, since there seem to be some very strong Germanic influences on the designs, with the colorful geometric patterns. "Bavarian" is the adjective that comes to mind, though someone from Bavaria would no doubt correct me on that. Looks good, and I look forward to seeing what you end up with. Be sure to take lots of pictures! -
Excellent work, Blufiji! This is spectacular. It makes me wish that I had the parts you do, especially the curved pieces over the windows and all of those tentacles in tan. I am in the process of imagining and designing my own Avalonian elven city, and those are architectural elements I wish I could incorporate without going out and buying a ton of them--I wish I had them already! I particularly like the round central keep, and the green lanterns are a nice touch. My one complaint is that your green foliage is a bit too regular; a dark green tree might have helped break up the monotony a bit. It still looks fantastic, though.
-
A simple, yet effective, vignette. I like the clean look of the build and the uncluttered composition. The tan color looks like a nice maple hardwood floor, or really any wood relatively freshly hewn or lacquered, so if that is what you were going for you succeeded. The black figure in the corner gives me the creeps, though. And is the baby still alive?

Challenge V: Spire entry: Spire...beginssss....
Henjin_Quilones replied to Muakhah's topic in Guilds of Historica
The figures and posing look good, but the landscape seems a bit thrown-together, a jumbled mish-mash. -
Amazing work, Gideon! I had seen many of these before in various "Best of GoH" compilations, but to see them all together in one place is great. My favorite detail in them, among many fantastic details, is the wide-trunked palm tree on the ostrich farm. I have never seen anyone else use the barrel halves for a tree trunk before, and they work well! Keep up the good work, and I look forward to seeing what you will do in the current challenge.

Bk. II: Challenge V: Cat. A: The Departure
Henjin_Quilones replied to Muakhah's topic in Guilds of Historica
On the one hand, you are correct, it is a bit flat and could use a tree, bush, rock, or something to change that. On the other, the cobblestone path and overall clean lines are lovely to behold in their own right. I do think it strange that you are mixing fleshies with yellowfaces, though. I also find that all of the different colors of flags, clothing, and weaponry, Kaliphlin-appropriate though they may be on their own, jumble together and create a visual cacophony. Try simplifying the color-scheme, using just dark blue or just red, and keep all the weapons dark grey, for example, to ease the eye. In such a small footprint such considerations truly matter, though in a larger build many different colors can coexist in harmony.- 15 replies

Bk. II: Challenge V: Cat. A: Spreading Word
Henjin_Quilones replied to soccerkid6's topic in Guilds of Historica
That's a lot of headlight bricks! They look great on the corner of the building, and equally impressive in the cobblestones. A very impressive, nicely polished build. But does it have a full interior? [Edit: on a second glance, I realized that the corners are not made using headlight bricks, but I still like the way they turned out.]- 17 replies

**Book II Challenge V Official Announcment**
Henjin_Quilones replied to ZCerberus's topic in Guilds of Historica
Unlikely, I think. Though theoretically not impossible... This is, I think, what the Challenge C is asking you to tell us: who is the new king? Is it the old king? His son? Someone else entirely? You, and all the rest of us, have the opportunity to shape and define the history of Historica, to actually create canonical lore. -

Read about it here, a long scroll down. He was last heard of, from my reading of the story, being brought alive before Victor Revolword, and nothing more is said about him from there, that I can recall. He is presumed dead, though, from what I can glean. -
Challenge V, Spire: A message laid bare to the world.
Henjin_Quilones replied to nivremis's topic in Guilds of Historica
Lovely photography, with the light filtering down from one source, and the build suits it well. Using Carnage as a skinned human body is always a nice move, and the blinded face works well here, too. The tattooed back of the Spire agent's head as he walks away with a knife and bloody hand creates an atmosphere of finality. My one complaint at this point is that I would like to see some pictures of the build as a whole, maybe in a spoiler so that they do not detract from your presentation, but it would be nice to actually see your techniques and the finer details without the photographic atmosphere obscuring them. -
Thanks, Windusky, I am glad you like the build. In my imagination, kind of like in the Lego Movie, all Lego is one universe and everything is connected in some way. But I can respect your difference of opinion, and I think you will not be bothered by my story going forward. This was just the character introduction and will soon be in the past. Thanks, SK! The landscape is definitely my best, though it used up every piece of foliage I own, so I'll need to get some more before I try anything larger. The story should make more sense once I get the next chapter up, or at least I hope so. Thanks for the feedback, LJ. I was a bit unsure of all of the greens myself, but I wanted to create the impression of a lush meadow, and the brighter greens served as contrast between the meadow and the forest, where more dark green was used for the ground. And all I ask is that you give the story a chance to develop with a few more chapters, and if you still do not like it, I can accept that. I knew I would be playing with fire when I dreamed up my story and would possibly upset some folks, but it was the story I wanted to tell. There will be no SW (or worse, Nexo) elements to the story henceforth, just fyi.

Chapter V, Book II: Searching for Hope
Henjin_Quilones replied to MassEditor's topic in Guilds of Historica
The manor itself is lovely, Avalonian with a hint of Mitgardia at the eaves, but for me it is the vegetation that is the highlight here. The large trees to either side of the manor are superb, and the others are nice, too, though the small birches are a bit too flat-topped for my taste. The way that it all spills over the side, as Faladrin has said, is a nice touch. And this is one of the only builds I have seen where the flower stalks as grass did not bother me, perhaps because they are balanced by the presence of so many other plants. Excellently done! -
No-Man's Keep, infiltration and breakout [FreeBuild]
Henjin_Quilones replied to Isundir's topic in Guilds of Historica
Very nice! I like all of the Nexo powers used as coats-of-arms to decorate the base, arranged by color. Nice touch! I also echo Titus and say that the vines are lovely; the dark red, dark orange, and reddish brown look good together, though semi-sinister (as opposed to Poison Ivy, who always has green vines) like death and corruption. The Ariel hair works for Camilla. -
Very nice, DG! I especially like the orc caught in mid-leap over the wall. The irregular base serves well here. I am not sure if you were going for a tree in autumn, but that is what it looks like to me, with some dark orange leaf piles on the ground below; otherwise it would be better with some more foliage on it, I think, especially near the top. But it looks good!

Very nice snow! I like what you have done with the lighting, too. The footsteps are a nice touch.

Book ll Challenge V Category A: Alliance: The Decoy
Henjin_Quilones replied to kahir88's topic in Guilds of Historica
Photography could use some improvement, the ruse is clever and humorous. The path could use some variation, and the basic, original Lego green could stand to be broken up with more of other shades of green. The build is fun, though.- 12 replies

Nice build, and you captured the Nocty feel admirably in such a limited footprint, using lavender foliage, dark tan ground, and the reds tent and clothes. And the poodle. Nothing speaks of the darkness of Nocturnus like a fluffy poodle, ready, like a dynamite rabbit, to rip your throat out. That dog scares me.

Nice entry, though I think your tree needs more foliage. It is rather sparse at the moment.

The retaking of Eolas: A chilly welcome

Good news: your build still looks good! I think I actually like the winter version better, in fact, even if it is more melancholic. Great job on the snow, particularly the rooftop snow. -
Book 2 - Challenge V Category A: On the lamb (Alliance)
Henjin_Quilones replied to Grover's topic in Guilds of Historica
You did a good job with the cliff, as it was immediately recognizable as a limestone/shale kind of cliff to me. I also like the tree, though I might suggest doing something to obscure a few of the studs on the bark; not all, necessarily, but some, to make it less regular. The technique is nice and well done. More foliage is the answer to your issue of lack of fullness; when making trees you cannot, and I mean cannot, have too many of those leaf pieces. The more you can stack on there the better, especially on the upper canopy. My own next brick order will be leaves, since I need more myself. I do not like your brick-built bushes. They are too inorganic-looking to be satisfactory bushes, in my opinion. But the giant sheep (I'm assuming it's Duplo?) is a nice touch.- 15 replies

Great job with the snow, and the figs are great, too. You are quickly becoming a master of the bleak northern landscape.

I like the story and I like the build! The highlights for me are the trans-green bricks for the water and the lush vegetation on the shore. That being said, the build lacks a certain something (I call it "pop") in its aesthetics. It is filled with many great details, but its composition is off. Perhaps it is that the colors are too varied, and too evenly varied, throughout the palette, or maybe the ground on the shore lacks enough elevation changes to make it more visually interesting, or even that the tree is too symmetrical to be natural. Perhaps there are so many neutral green, grey, and brown colors that the details get swallowed up. I'm not entirely sure myself, but it might be partially all of the above. I had to really look to see what was going on in the build, and with such a small footprint, that means you are trying to do too much. I have been guilty of the same before, so I know how hard it can be. A single bold theme usually works better on such a small base, rather than so many details crammed in. I like it, but it would be better as part of something larger, or else cropped down even further. I hope that helps in a positive and constructive way. I do not mean to be overly critical; instead I just want you to improve into the best builder you can be!

The Exetrius Saga (13): Taking a stand, for Nocturnus!

Very nice! I love your stories and the story-illustrating photography. The Ninjago influences in Zotharith are lovely and one of my favorite aspects of your builds, as nothing is cooler (in my opinion) than ninja-mages.- 16 replies
