  1. This is great! Your color-scheme really works here, and I am loving the snow on those trees. The trees themselves are also great. I do think the messenger's hands would be cold, though, without gloves...
  2. You packed quite the bustling wharf onto such a small footprint, I must say. The colors and figs really sell it as Kaliphlin, which is great, though perhaps the port is a bit too busy, visually, for such a small scene. Perhaps it is just that the sail takes up a large amount of the visual space, creating a barrier to try to see around. Good work with the wall!
  3. Very nice, especially for a rushed build. I like the colors, and the idea of a flaming mailbox is quite clever; though I do wonder how the messenger failed to notice the smoke rising from the flames...
  4. I love that beast! You are amazing at creating brick-built animals. The SNOT rock base is also quite impressive. Good work!
  5. I like your plant life and the tar pits (or oil pits?), as they create an interesting landscape, though maybe not the upside-down bushes. Also, there are a few too many angular pieces on the ground that are a bit jarring to me. I think I would prefer something to smooth out some of those edges and make them seem more organic and natural. All told, though, the landscape is nice and brings to life a side of Kaliphlin that I had not seen before. Well done!
  6. Thanks, Maestro! I tried, with low-light pictures, to create something dismal and oppressive, like the Spire. The birds are taken from Gideon, with some slight modifications, so he should get most of the credit there. And the sand green came from a PaB wall a little bit ago, and I am loving having so many 1x2 plates of that color. Thanks, dG! I wanted an artsy kind of picture for the build to capture the emotions of it, and that last one, mostly silhouetted, did a pretty nice job, I thought. Glad you like it. Thanks, Windusky! Ellardin is in a rough place, for sure. I'd say, given the amount of blood lost and the vital organs punctured, that he is rather unlikely to get through this one. The vulture is certainly hoping so...
  7. Imagination is the key...and a willingness to tear something apart five times or more before finally settling on a proper base. The build started with the idea for a brick-built eagle, which ended up being about three times larger than first intended, leading to many adjustments along the way... Thanks, LJ! High praise from you, and I am flattered. I'm glad you like the head, as that was what I started with, and it grew (quite literally, as the size was not what I anticipated at the start) from there. I am rather pleased with the final product myself. Thanks, Kai! The wings took a while to figure out, but I thought they looked pretty nice by the end. Thanks, Titus! I am glad you like the eagle, since I sure do. I will be sad to take it apart. Thanks, dG! Since there are no height restrictions, per se, I took advantage of the vertical space, as well as the horizontal equivalent of a 34-stud build, to create a structure that was suitably imposing without going over my base allotment. Glad you like it! Thanks, Windusky! Glad you like both parts of it, since the wall took twice as long as the eagle.
  8. This is great! The small section of wall and the tower are excellently laid out and built, with the 1x1 round plates, along with the round tiles, giving just enough texture to the walls to make them interesting without being overwhelming. It fits together with your other build nicely.
  9. The foliage is excellent, especially that Venus Fly(human?) Trap. I like how you attached all of the teeth, using droid arms for difficult angles. It looks like he is riding through either a thick swamp or quicksand, and in either situation I do not envy that horse. I think your deep irregular base is perfect here.
  10. Very nice use of Tauntauns. They are a great Mitgardian animal for sure due to their adaptations for cold and snow. The platform is a creative use of parts and an interesting way of capturing the action. Good work!
  11. I like the spindly nature of the tree, as it complements the sorcerers' actions nicely. I also love that all of the sorcerers wear different color cloaks and hoods. The action is nicely captured. The ground is a bit plain, though, and could use some additional foliage or at very least some different colors. Overall, though, I like it.
  12. Evening Falls Like a Vulture's Wing A build for the Spire in Book II, Challenge V, Category A As the sun set below the horizon, Ellardin the elf messenger slumped back against the rock. His body was afire with pain every time he moved, as the spear points and arrows lodged in him dug a little deeper into his vitals, and it would not be long now. A rustling behind his ear caused him to look up. A black vulture was perched on the rock inches from his face, its eyes looking hungrily from its red bald head. Ellardin looked away and sighed. His bloody fingers clutched the letter to King Fingolë the Golden, knowing that it would never make it to its destination; those drow huntsmen had made sure of that. More vultures circled and landed around Harafel, his horse, as the light dimmed. The sound of beaks tearing at the soft innards caused the elf to shudder, which in turn caused him to cry out softly in pain as the points worked inwards. The evening was falling quickly now, and the vultures were coming in thickly. Darkness had come. More pictures: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- .............................................................................................................................. Thanks for looking, and C&C welcome. Gideon's vulture design was the inspiration for this build, so a big shout out to him for being inspirational.
  13. I like all of those browns together, along with the black and dark grey. They make the shop look suitably sooty and grimy. It has a very Mitgardian feel as well, particularly with the eaves and gables. My one bit of critique is that the stonework is too regular, especially on the chimney, but elsewhere, too. An over-reliance on the textured bricks creates a boring wall, in my opinion. Otherwise it is a great build!
  14. An official welcome, then. Nice build and character introduction! The beast is very interesting, a clever use of spindly-looking parts to make a solid whole. I have to say that I am not a huge fan of the mixing of the two types of bat-wings there, though, as it looks a bit off. The base is a nice addition, as the hole is well done. In answer to one of your questions, most builds I have seen around here seem to prefer the border to end a bit below the ground level (and I prefer it, too), though there is certainly no requirement that it be so, and there are many builds with the border being higher than the surroundings and countless border-less builds, too. As a side note: the guild's name is Kaliphlin, not Kaliphan.
  15. My Category A build for the Alliance is up: And my Category A build for the Spire:
  16. The Eagle at the Great Wall of Hesperia A build for the Alliance in Book II, Challenge V, Category A "We have to make all speed, Aeriglaaac, to get this message to King Fingolë the Golden," said Celdrian the Eagle Rider. "The eastern elves were very particular about making haste. The heir to Cedrica returning will be news welcome to his ears, I think, even if the humans of Avalonia and all of Historica are hardly his concern. Lord Ravaage certainly is his concern, though." "EEAAAAAK!" "You're right, Aeriglaaac, as usual. It would be fun to buzz the tower over at the peak of Oronech, wouldn't it? I love keeping those guards on their toes." "EEAAAAAAAAAAAK RAAAAK!" "You see Prince Fingalad at the tower with your eagle eyes? Excellent, a chance to show off our flying skills!" "EAAAK EEEAAAAAAK EEEEEEK!" "Ok, alright, your flying skills, then." "EEAAAAK!" "Let's go!" "What the..." said Prince Fingalad. "Eagle Riders. Cocky bunch. How I despise them, however useful they may be." More pictures: _____________________________________________________________________ .......................................................................................................................................... Thanks for looking! C&C welcome. Hopefully the overhang is not unreasonable. The base of the build is 248 studs, slightly smaller than the 256 of a 16x16 base, though the decorative border adds to that (but doesn't count, thankfully).
  17. Your style resembles LD's a bit more every time I see a new build from you. Next you'll be putting helmets into the walls... I like the way the tree is growing through the house, even out of the window, and the tudor section of the top has been knocked askew by the growth. I don't actually like the tree very much, though, and I think it is because it needs more foliage to provide an adequate counterbalance to the building. Also, the dark red leaf does not work there, I think. The door is great, though, and I like the overall build.
  18. Great work, Legofin! The irregular base is good as usual, but the highlight for this one for me is the dark green tree in the background. And of course I love the Tauntaun--glad to see it back again!
  19. I actually like the domes as they are, though I think it would also look good with larger dome there as well, maybe a 4x4 dome, or even something larger. That being said, the use of color and texture is excellent. The reddish brown looks very nice next to the tan and dark tan of the rest, and the flowers and figs provide just the right amount of color to complement the dusty world you have created. My main complaint is that I don't really like the daggers as hinges here; they do look nice, but they feel out of place, especially the gold part. Otherwise, great job!
  20. Great job, SK! This is lovely. The colors work well and the layout heightens the mill's significance (by putting it on a hill). The stonework style looks re-purposed from your cottage, but is maybe even better here. The upside-down barrel half at the top is a nice finishing touch, the "cherry on the top", if you will. And it is good to see your story along with the build, too.
  21. Looks great as usual, ME! I'll echo LJ and compliment you on the pairing of the dark red with gold accents; that really makes it pop to me and gives it great life. I also am admiring the stonework of your chimney, with the beautiful texturing that you did there. And of course, the aesthetic layout of the build and landscape are splendid. I think this is an amazing build.
  22. Clever use of the vertical space, as well as forced perspective. The night lighting is, as Titus said, a bit too starry (or the stars are too big and bright, maybe) but also a beautiful idea, and the lighting on the water (and the star under the bridge) are, pun not intended, highlights for me.
  23. I love the irregular base! I am glad I am not the only one who decided a traditional 16x16 square, or something roughly similar, was the way to go (as you'll see when I get mine posted); the long-and-lean look allows for so much more action to be shown. The outpost is appropriately orcish and rickety, and your fig posing is great as usual.
  24. The snow on the rock is very well done. It is an interesting take on the challenge to make the messenger be an Algus soldier. I like it.
  25. Where is the limit on "reasonable overhang"? I don't mean to deliberately push the boundary, but the build I have built (and now need to photograph) has a slightly less than 16x16 stud equivalent base (248 vs. 256 studs) with some tower crenelations overhanging at the top and the wings and body of a large bird also overhanging to some extent (though mostly over the base). Part of my inspiration, as a frame of reference, is Emma's winning entry from an earlier challenge, with the way the dragon's wings, head, and tail all overhang to a fairly decent extent over the boundary. I am going to post my build in the next few days (as soon as I can take the pictures and edit them) regardless, but I just want to know that I am not in flagrant violation of the challenge rules to ease my mind. It might be a case of "I won't know until I see it", but some guidance would be nice.
