  1. I like the house and the techniques, though I am not a huge fan of the bright blue color for a forestman's cottage; a house in Nottingham village, perhaps, not not one out in the forest itself. That's just my preference, and there is not a whole lot of scenic context for the build here to know where it is situated. I think a row of these in a village would be spectacular, though!
  2. Excellent! I like all of the different builds you have there, and they are used to good effect to tell your story. Like Titus, I was surprised by the twist at the end, and see that you have set things in Book III up for continued warfare. My favorite build is probably the bone-tree forest, as the trees are nice and I love the irregular, but still formal, base with all the curves. And eesh! The competition is stiff! I hope my story can match this.
  3. Nicely done! The story is progressing along well. I hope that we get an overview shot of the build in a spoiler at the end of the whole story, since there are some details at the back that I like but cannot fully see. I like all of your different builds that you use to tell the tale, too.
  4. Very nice story and figs! I wish they made more dual-mold arms in flesh tones, though.
  5. I love both builds, though I think I like the burned one even more, just because it is the more unusual. The burned effect was very well captured, with the varying thicknesses of the remaining rafters and other bits of charred timbers. My one complaint is that the chimney and other stonework of the burned build is smaller and lower than that of the whole version. I also wonder whether a smoother snow-scape would look better with your highly textured building style, to provide a better contrast between the two sections. It is just speculation, as it looks good now, too.
  6. The size and scope is certainly impressive, though the palm trees are my favorite part of it. The hills are also excellent, and make me wish I had even a fraction of the medium dark flesh and other tones that you used there. My main complaint is that you removed the portals before posting it here! Though I suppose random spacemen and robots would go a bit against the grain for Historica...
  7. Very nice! While, as others have said, the rocks are a bit monotonous, I really like the idea of the build and its execution otherwise. Even the uniform nature of the rocks works in a certain way, I think. My favorite part is the way you used the rappelling pieces to suspend the cable from the supports.
  8. Got to love those (at least semi-)supportive LEGO wives! (Though mine has been a LEGO widow recently as I have been working in every spare moment on builds...)
  9. @Kai NRG, @Slegengr, @Gunman: Thanks for your advice! I ended up getting the cheaper of the two Canon options I had listed, as it seemed to have the same stuff, if not better, for less money. Hopefully there will be a significant difference in the presentation of my larger builds for Category C (it's too late for the smaller ones; they have been photographed and consumed by the larger ones for parts...).
  10. Does anyone have some advice on what kind of DSLR camera to buy and/or avoid buying for LEGO photography? I am sick of my low resolution and badly focused pictures (especially for larger shots) and my wife has given me the authorization to buy a new camera (yay!) but I wanted to see if anyone had some feedback. There are several Canons on Amazon with what seem to be nice bundles for less than $500, like this one and this one. I do not know enough about the nuances of it all to know just from looking that one bundle is better (the camera itself seems to be the same). Thanks for any help anyone can give!
  11. From talking to the Kaliplinites and reading the preludes, the DK has allied with the Resistance, and the High Council and Ulandus are Spire supporters (allegedly, but not fully confirmed). At least that is the reality as I am working with it in my builds and story.
  12. Thanks for the extra views! This is great. As I said the first time, I like the legs for arrow slits. Other details like stained glass and brick-built curtains are also lovely. An impressive creation to be sure.
  13. You have some great details there in the castle! I like the ball-joint receivers as a detail on the crenelations in particular. All of the figs swarming around everywhere adds to the chaotic feel of the battle quite nicely, too, though of course it is difficult to tell exactly what is going on (which seems appropriate for a battle anyways). It is interesting seeing a young Raavage, too. Nicely done!
  14. Yes, the pictures are there now. As for the build and story, I have several areas of critique. First of all, while it is kind of nice that everyone was getting along, it was rather unrealistic. For example, Arthur the King of Avalonia (a.k.a. Artorious Rex) has been gone for a long time, with regents ruling in his stead, and it is unlikely that he is coming back any time soon, as far as I know. Also, part of the purpose of this challenge is to determine who is ruling Nocturnus in the first place (Raavage and the Spire, or the Resistance), so assuming that Raavage is the master of the guild is just begging the question (a logical fallacy); and there seems to be little chance that Raavage would ever play nice like this, rather than using his armies to overrun the lands. There are some other issues of a similar sort with the rest, too; especially with Dextrus Flagg, though the Kaliplinites will no doubt know better than I about that. That being said, it is an interesting concept for the deciding of the true king of Historica, especially since it ends up being the actual son of the king who claims the throne (though violently through patricide/regicide). As for the build, I love those bone wings on Thadrak's back! Those are really great. I also really like the statues battling at the top of the arena; the posing is well done and the weapons are interesting. I would recommend a white or solid color background, though, to keep the bits of your room out of the picture.
  15. Very interesting how the black dragon humanoid thing has horns like Raavage... A good introduction to your main story, I think, setting things up for you. My main complaint is that in the image with the forced perspective, neither the foreground nor the background are in focus, which hurts the effect. I like the yellow and tan/grey wall behind the king in the picture with the purple fortune teller built with headlight bricks, as well as the bust in the king's bedroom. Nicely done!
  16. That's all I can see now, too. I glanced through it last night and there were pictures, but not anymore.
  17. Thanks for your help, my friends! I do not have any of that Kingdoms torso (darn those dark ages) but I do have some blue Castle 2013 lion torsos; maybe those with dark red (or dark blue, too) arms would work just as well? I'll see what I can whip together that looks satisfactory (perhaps some soldiers with this torso and different arms and legs?). And supposing that it were proven that the Spire and HC&U are united, it seems reasonable that some of the former HC&U supporters would wish to, not switch sides, per se, but at very least resist the Spire and its allies and fight against the same enemy as the Desert King, not under his command, or officially allied with him, but fight against a common enemy at the same time as he was. (And as I regrettably do not have the parts for your fig, Kai, no need to worry about being seen allied with the DK...)
  18. Do what you must do, Windusky! We'll miss you when you are gone, and if you come back in the future, we'll welcome you with open arms! Blessings on your future endeavors.
  19. Hello Kaliphlinites! I have a question for you all, related to the current challenge. Is there a large visual distinction between the troops of the Desert King (who won the Kaliphlin Civil War, right?) and those of Ulandus and the High Council? Does anyone know of a place to see examples of the armies of each side, without me having to scroll through many, many pages of threads? I know that loyalty to both sides remains pretty strong despite the victory of the Desert King, but with the rumors of the High Council and Ulandus being in league with the Spire, would that sway some HC&U supporters to fight alongside the DK despite disliking him (the whole "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" kind of thing)? So that was several questions, not one, I guess, but I thank you for your assistance to this poor Avalonian who came late to the dance, so to speak, and missed the first 4 challenges of Book II.
  20. Did Finn shave? And grow out his hair? Or is that some other fellow who wears the same clothes as Finn? Looks great, by the way. I look forward to seeing the rest of it. Here's hoping for an extension!
  21. I think it would be nice to have some textured stonework as the entrance level, with the plastered tudor section as the second floor. A dormer window in the roof would also look nice. The story is nice, though, and I look forward to seeing a ballroom scene next!
  22. Thanks, en_zoo! It was a hastily thrown together build, but it turned out pretty nicely. Thanks, Cap! If Nocturnus (and @Blufiji) has taught me anything, it is that water ought to be lime green. Thanks, LdB! I'm not so sure of its efficacy, but destructive looking certainly. Thanks, Blu! Thanks, mrcp6d! The black space wheels are actually dark pearl grey, and came from a Ninjago set; I was imagining them to be large steel wheels for another tractor-esque weapon of destruction. Thank you, Grover! I've been wanting to use the sails for a covering like that for a long time now, and was glad that the sudden fit of inspiration caught me to throw it in there. Thanks, Brandon! Ground layering is essential to create a semi-realistic plastic world. Glad you like it!
  23. Thanks, en_zoo! The wall texture I was going for was extreme, so if you think it is over-textured, my goal was achieved. I wanted it to contrast with the smoothness of the wall around the gate and the battlements above. Glad you like the bear, too. It was a beast (pun intended) to get right. Thanks, Cap! The bear's no camel, but still... Thank you, Blu! Brick-built animals are something that I have never been that good at, so I have been challenging myself in that area during this challenge. Hopefully we'll see more of them around Historica. Thanks, mrcp6d! It is, as you say, difficult with furry creatures, but my feeling was that smooth texture was a bit better than too studdy, as it allows the rounded, organic shape to be seen a bit more clearly than the unnaturally regular stud pattern. A matter of personal preference, perhaps. Thanks! The prevalent glowing orange rods are perhaps the best part about NK sets, aside from the villains. And the mask was chiefly intended to hide the bit of yellow flesh showing at the neck, but also serves nicely to keep sparks and soot from going down the smith's throat. Thanks, Brandon. I spent a considerable amount of time on the backdrop, so I am glad you like them! Thanks, Mpyromaxos! Your praise is appreciated!
  24. Nice build, Brandon! I like the thought that went into the layout. The courtyard, with all of the action, is my favorite bit. As regards presentation, I think (if it is possible) that it would be better to present a 3/4 view of the build, rather than a full-on frontal shot. I find the straight shot of the front (no matter what build, from the largest masterpiece of a castle to the smallest vignette) just a bit boring. A view from a corner looks better, aesthetically. Also, something I notice about LDD builds in general is that the individual brick lines fade into nothingness, creating an artificial-looking smooth grey surface. Is it possible to make those lines show up? Without them it just doesn't look much like LEGO.
