Book 2 Challenge V Cat A: Gleamer Rider
Henjin_Quilones replied to Blufiji's topic in Guilds of Historica
The curled reed in the flower stalk looks great! I like the saddle, too, and the composition is simple but elegant. Well done! -
It looks much better from a practical standpoint with the shingles the way you have them now. Good work staying with it and taking advice and following through!

No stoning? I guess burning would be more appropriate, though. Thanks for the nice words! It is my biggest and best, in my opinion, build yet. Well, they are not quite Jedi anymore, just more like wizard warriors. Druid magic users, with impressive reflexes and skills. Druid magic is powerful and can transform many things and call heroes from across the galaxies into a critical moment in history. It can also wipe memories and leave only fragments of a past, which is what we will learn, in subsequent chapters, has happened to Henjin and his band. I am glad you like the build and the idea!

It looks good for having limited resources. I know the feeling, as I myself have moved a few times this past year and had times with limited or incomplete collections. I like the doorway and window, as that arch is one of my favorites and distinctively Kaliphlinian. The open air deck is a nice touch, with a fair lady looking down. Keep it up, and I look forward to seeing what you can do with all of your bricks!
-
I agree, as long as the outermost ones are also adjusted to the new pattern (which they are not in the LDD picture).
-
It is not my AG character, actually, since this is Henjin Quilones II, whereas my AG character is Henjin Quilones CCIX, 207 generations in the future. This character was one I used in a non-Eurobricks setting for years, in a galaxy far, far away and a long time ago.

AoM: Mill Phase I: Mitgardian Ox Mill
Henjin_Quilones replied to soccerkid6's topic in Guilds of Historica
Very nice, SK! The reddish dirt reminds me of the dirt in my yard, rich in iron and very clayey. I love the functionality of the build, a normal thing for your builds it seems, but quite fun. The tree is great, too. My one complaint would be that the wheat stalks are too thick, but I have yet to see it done well in Lego scale.- 15 replies

Book II - Avalonia: Guild sign-up and Discussion
Henjin_Quilones replied to Rogue Angel's topic in Guilds of Historica
A new freebuild up from me, and finally the second chapter in the Chronicles of Hesperia: Hope you like it! -
The Chronicles of Hesperia Vol. 1: The Sky Man Ch. 2: The Crash Site The previous chapter: DISCLAIMER: For those of you who may be extreme GoH purists, the following build may be disturbing, as it does contain some Sci-Fi elements. To ease your concern, however, let me assure you that after this chapter those elements are gone and a pure medieval fantasy vibe is all that will remain. The unwholesome elements are my way of introducing a character that I had been using for many years in builds with friends, in a different galaxy, far, far away... [edit: Druidic magic is behind these events and causes the non-Historican elements of them to be erased from the memories of the participants after they happen, so do not be concerned that they will be entering into Historica on a full-time basis; such 'pollution' is not, and never was, my intention.] Galaria peeked through the trees and bushes at the sight before her. Her wolfsteed, Laika, she had left back in a small meadow with the wolfsteeds of her fellow Hesperian Wolf Rangers, so that they could approach closer without being seen. Some of her rangers climbed trees for a better vantage point on the smouldering mass in the clearing. The fireball had landed in the center of an ancient ring of druid standing stones, erected long years before the first elves had come this far west in the world. The druids themselves were gone for many centuries before Galaria's father, Fingolë the Golden, first established the kingdom of Hesperia, and that was an age ago in the land of sunset. The smoking hulk did not look like any meteorite that Galaria had ever seen before nor like any she had heard tell of; if she were not certain that it could not be true, she would have said that it looked like metal, a giant steel cylinder that fell from the sky. As she watched, a panel on the side opened, revealing a brief glimpse of the interior as a man stepped out. The man was clad in tan robes and wore a brown cloak over them, and carried in his hand a metal tube that vaguely resembled the hilt of a sword, though no blade was attached. His tousled, wavy brown hair framed a handsome face with a roguish grin. His eyes moved over the landscape swiftly and Galaria shrank back into the bushes instinctively. Soon the man was fully out of the sky-cylinder, and another, also clad in tan robes and brown cloak, carrying the same type of metal tube followed, and then came a small army of helmeted and armored figures carrying some sort of black thing in their hands, held almost like she had seen a crossbowman hold his weapon during a marksmanship contest two summers before. Weapons of some sort. With the exception of two of them, the armored figures were clad in greens and browns, camouflaged for thick forests. They quickly made a defensive perimeter around the sky-cylinder. The two cloaked figures examined one of the druid columns, together with one of the white-and-green clad figures. Galaria could hear their voices talking in a strange tongue, one not spoken in Historica, at least not by elves, dwarves, men, orcs, drow, or any of the tribes of Nocturnus that she knew of. The other white-and-green figure came over, and both armored ones took off their helmets, revealing a brown-haired man and a golden-haired woman. The woman clearly thought that they ought to move away from the crash site, by her hand gestures, and followed that up by stepping past the Druid column. To Galaria's amazement, her clothing and gear changed the instant she passed the standing stone, looking like a typical human warrior woman with a bow and quiver. The armored man, amazement on his face, also stepped past and underwent a similar transformation. "That was incredible," the man said in perfect Hesperian Elvish. "I cannot believe what just happened, Thorra; can you?" "No, Gree, I cannot," replied the woman in equally excellent Hesperian. "Henjin, Bu'kanjin, you two step across now and see what happens." The robed-and-cloaked men also stepped through and were transformed, the one called Henjin now wearing ancient druidic armor and Bu'kanjin wearing a different style of the same. The others wearing armor gathered around the edge of the stones and began to take off their helmets, revealing more men, of colors more familiar to Kaliphlin traders than Avalonian forestmen. Suddenly one of Galaria's Rangers, Ankeria, stood up and drew back her bow, letting an arrow fly. In the blink of the same moment, the man called Henjin caught the arrow that was aimed for his heart in his hand and Bu'kanjin fired an arrow of his own, piercing Ankeria in the neck and killing her instantly. The humans were on high alert with arrows nocked on taut bowstrings, with more of them stepping across the stones and transforming all the time. Galaria's small band was vastly outnumbered and, by the signs of it, outmatched in skill. She stepped out from behind the foliage she was using as cover, right in front of the Henjin, the Sky-Man, and said, "Put down your weapons, we mean you no harm." Henjin smiled at her and she felt her fate entwine with his as his voice spoke to her. "Greetings, we are strangers here in this land. My name is Henjin Quilones, son of Henjin Quilones, and this is my brother, Bu'kanjin. We have journeyed far across the heavens, called here to this land by the Force." Galaria nodded. "And I am Galaria, daughter of Fingolë the Golden, the king of Hesperia. If you have been called here, it was not by us, but perhaps by the power of the druids in whose circle of stones you landed and whose armor you bear. There is an ancient prophecy that said that the true king of Historica, the great and vast land of which Hesperia is but a tiny part, would arise, after a star fell from the heavens, to battle and defeat the dark scourge of the land. Are you he?" asked the elf maiden. Henjin shook his head. "No, I know nothing of your prophecies, and I am no king. A humble Knight am I, not yet even a Master. But I shall gladly join you and your father the king in the battle against that dark scourge. My sword and bow are at your disposal." "And mine," said Bu'kanjin. "Thank you both," said Galaria. "Now, you had better follow me away from the stone ring, called Stangraf by the Druids, O Knights of Stangraf, before any orc or drow patrols come and investigate. I shall take you to Istolia, the city where my cousin governs." "Very well," said Henjin Quilones, the newly dubbed Knight of Stangraf, and he and his companions followed the fair elf maiden into the eaves of the forest. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ................................................................................................................................................................................................................ Thanks for looking and reading! It has been a long time since my last Hesperian build, but much has happened between then and now (moving twice, starting a new job, etc.) so it is good to be back building in the Guilds again, C&C welcome!

A nice vignette! The posing of the figures is nice. I would recommend adding more foliage to your tree, as it looks rather flat and bare right now. The path, with its varied sizes and colors, though, looks nice.

The retaking of Eolas: A hollow victory

It does show the aftermath of a battle fairly well, whatever you might think about its quality and design. The kneeling Maestro is a nice touch, as are all of your arrows. -
[Freebuild] So Sound The Drums Of Vacunani
Henjin_Quilones replied to Umbra-Manis's topic in Guilds of Historica
The build itself is excellent, but what really captures my imagination is your short description that accompanies it. Superb! I love the sense of history and mystery that it presents. The build has some great piece usage, in particular Mjolnir being used for steps. The drum apparatus is also top-notch. Well done!- 13 replies

I'll echo what the others have said about the mosaic, as it is very nice (sponsored by Under Armour?). I also like your cobblestones, varied in size, shape, and color. The thing that impressed me most, however, was the use of the droid arms and clips around the roof to create a very unique border. I like it. Intentional or not, the tree is also reminiscent of a bonsai, and the build in its arrangement and colors reminds me of one of those zen garden sand things. Appropriately Asian.

Nice vignette! My one complaint is that the colors are too uniform, with the same greens in the tree and grass, and the figure's clothing and food, too. If there were better contrast between them, or perhaps just an additional splash of color somewhere, like a patch of flowers, I think it would improve the image and get it a bit more visual "pop". Other than that, nice techniques and a pleasing setup.

A Poor Choice Of Mount [Book II Challenge V Category A]
Henjin_Quilones replied to Isundir's topic in Guilds of Historica
Nice creature! I like it. I might suggest building up the terrain a bit to make it more than just flat brown plates with corner vegetation, but that is fairly minor since the focus is clearly on the creature and the dangling "rider". Why wouldn't the build be allowed? Everyone can build in the competition, and there are no restrictions on where/in what guild you depict your rider, at least that I know of. But I could be wrong. I have been known to make mistakes, from time to time.- 12 replies

I like the bristling appearance of the building with all of the spiky cheese slopes. It seems very Nocturnian in flavor. My one bit of advice would be to flip the cheese slopes the other way, or better yet build them on 2x14 (or whatever length) plates that are stacked like stairs rather than on a flat plate, so as to create a more roof-like appearance. As it is, water would have a very difficult time running down the shingles, getting caught on every ridge and pooling up and eventually creating a leak. The interior is excellent, especially the level of lived-in clutter that you have captured. As for your plans to build it up on the rocks, I would personally advise against it, especially as you have it in LDD. The BURPs are generally frowned upon in AFOL circles as being a too-easy and unattractive way of doing rocks. If you build it up with grey bricks and slopes, that is one thing, but I would avoid using the BURPs in any visible way. If you can work it into a landscape well, go for it, but for its own sake I think it looks good the way it is.

Chal V Cat A : Alliance side : A Courier in the air
Henjin_Quilones replied to Tezclatipoca's topic in Guilds of Historica
Haha, I was actually talking about the griffon's legs at that point; I should have phrased it less ambiguously! The rider's legs might seem too long (but better in terms of real human proportions, probably), but not spindly.- 22 replies

Chal V Cat A : Alliance side : A Courier in the air
Henjin_Quilones replied to Tezclatipoca's topic in Guilds of Historica
Very nice! I like how you popped off the rider's legs and put them on the side to give the illusion of him riding astride the griffin's back. My main complaint is that the legs seem too long and spindly, especially in relation to the size of the wings. But it is a nice brick-built beastie. Good work!- 22 replies

I love those "elephant trunk" pieces in tan used for mushroom stalks; they look so fungus-y and delightful! I agree with Titus on the ridge, but beyond that, it is good to see you back!
-
I like the use of the ball joint sockets on the tower, and the tower as a whole. Your use of BURPs for the cliffs is nicely masked with additional dark grey and snow, creating a typically Mitgardian scene. I think it would look better with a different treatment for the water, as the baseplate is a little too studdy, but it still works. Nicely done!

Book II Chal V Cat A: Summons for the Loyal
Henjin_Quilones replied to LittleJohn's topic in Guilds of Historica
The path is great, LJ, as others have said, but to me what stands out most is the level of polish that the build displays. That is largely due to the fact that not a single stud is showing outside of the foliage at the top of the tree. The SNOT landscape is very effective for that. Excellent work! Maybe the messenger will even get there on time...- 21 replies

AoM: Store Phase 3: Sigurd's General Goods
Henjin_Quilones replied to soccerkid6's topic in Guilds of Historica
Excellent work, SK! I particularly enjoy the contrast between the dark grey, and very bumpy, walls of the building and the comparatively bright orange and tan, and quite smooth, roof. The timbered sections tie in perfectly and make for a very complete-looking building. The cobblestones and grass complete it all nicely. My only complaint is that, compared to the meticulously designed and arranged exterior, the interior shop section seems too disordered and has too many colors in it, particularly for a northern town. That is purely my opinion, though, and it is well done as a general store. It might be the bright blue teapot that does it for me. I love the armchair on the second floor, though. Again, a spectacular building! -
Guilds of Historica New Member Guide
Henjin_Quilones replied to SkaForHire's topic in Guilds of Historica
Like SK and LJ (edit: and everyone else that has replied), I do keep my parts organized by piece and color, rather than in a giant heap of miscellaneous chaos. It helps me build more quickly and efficiently. As for tearing them down, I do not usually do it as quickly as some others have said, but gradually, as I need pieces for other things, until finally I have a pile of many ruins that need to be sorted back into their respective bins. For some builds I sketch first, but more often than not I am just putting some pieces together until I reach a point that I like it, trying, to the best of my pieces and ability, to reach the Platonic ideal that resides in my imagination. I have never used LDD myself, not more than playing around once or twice to see what it was, and certainly have not used it for building. I cannot think on computer screens like I can with my hands on bricks. -
