Meatman posted a video from Paul on the 2. page of this topic. It uses only one rotary catch. I've used the phrase "based" on it, cos when I built it I found that one of the axles can be eliminated. And another pic in this topic gave the idea to use the 20T clutch gears that takes the 12/20 ratio inside the box. The reason I'm trying to lower the number of axles is to reduce friction. Also I insist to keep the ratos (0.2, 0.33, 0.66, 1) as practically I find these useful. In the meantime I've built a chassis around to test it and it works surprisingly well. Awaits for an outdoor test as the livingroom turned out to be small.

Well, while the conscious me wasn't gonna go for symmetry, the subconscious me just could not let it go. The strange mixture of this psychological nonsense resulted in a non practical but symmetrical layout. Please take it as a thought experiment: A little change that I left out the 20T clutch gears from this version. (still based on Pauls layout)

Yeap @Didumos69, I follow your fight towards perfection. I had little expectation towards this rotary catch for first, but after just testing that setup under stress, I have to say I'm happy wit it. From where I'm standing this gearbox is considerably smaller then the old type, more durable and reliable and since the last pics, I've changed the servo to an M motor with a back to center part (hockey spring or what is that). Sticked an L motor on the input and abused it to find the weak spot. It didn't let me down. (yet) Regarding that clutch gear. It's ok there, always rotates the same direction as the axle. Those AWD gearboxes you've mentioned, if you remember mine had an asymmetric input, only the output was centered. And from all of my gearboxes that was the only axle ever in center. So your fight for symmetry is rather personal. So will be the victory

Hi everyone, I could not resist to take my turn on this topic, however what you'll see here is based on @Paul Boratko's gearbox. I've really appreciated that it's offered the good old ratios. I don't build digitally, so I've made a dummy frame for the mechanism. I hope it gives you the view to clearify what is going on in there: It uses only four axles plus the selector axle and there is only one 16T clutchgear involved in forwarding torque. (I know @Didumos69 it is one more than ideal ) Some pics in the proper housing: The red connector is the input, yellows are the output, the white ox thingy is the limiter (1-4). There is a knobwheel too that indicates my attempt on the motorized stepper: Looks awful doesn't it? Well I couldn't get rid of my old stepper idea... That's it. Works well all around, but I wouldn't say it is the proper (final) execution. Meant to be a proof of concept and I hope it inspires some upcoming ideas of yours. Have a lovely weekend.

Nice work there @IRONDUCK. You and @Void_S made a fantastic job. Thanks guys. Shame on me I was busy/lazy to make proper instructions. Speaking of illegal connections I know it is a headacke when it comes to digitalizing a model, but I'm a well known outlaw and I don't build digitaly. In fact latelly I don't build much at all. Hereby I grab the opportunity to say thank you to @Jim for placing this build to the HoF. Also kudos to @Didumos69 for pushing this HoF thingy. Sorry for being away so long (and it's not even over yet), one day I'll catch up with myself and -as a famous robot once said- I'll be back. Keep building guys! @Bublehead I'm looking forward to see your version...

@Didumos69 Thank you for posting them. @mocbuild101 Thanks, I like to build in small scale, there wasn't many gearbox on the "market" in this size. Just filled the gap. -

Where should I sign this? I agree. I still hold my opinion though, with a coding we could ease the tension and avoid being missunderstood.- 179 replies

Attika replied to Erik Leppen's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
@J_C I used to build Revell plane model 1:144 scale a lot, I might have been infected back then and make me do thing these days like this: When I realized that the emptied 36T gear fits perfectly (like...two lego pieces ) on the outer circle of the differential I couldn't resist to go forward with the experiment. While I consider this my biggest sin, I forgive myself as both parts are still in production, (so I replaced them from bricklink) and never used the modified part in published build. I know it doesn't save me from burning in Lego hell, but good to know that all the official designers gonna be around me in the flames...- 179 replies

Gearbox collection thread
Attika replied to Didumos69's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
As it is a thread under your management and you have more experience shaping topics I'd be honored if you do it for me. Not to mention it is shaping up to be a busy weekend that is why I could not make a specific timing on it. Two of my gearboxes have their own topics here and there is one under the 8880 evo too. Thank you in advance. -
Continued to follow your build and the outcome is really satisfying by every meaning. After reading @Meatman's comment I had a look on google to check the engine bay of the real one and I don't see the problem. By proportion your solution is much closer to the reality than the standard lego engine would be. Overall it is a well recognizable model from every angle, one of the best captured bodywork ever. Purism

Well it seems like we continue to coexist the way we are now, but I have to admit that the frequency of "heretic cases" are growing. I accept it could be disturbing for those who don't like it. Probably as a guide we should use some coding to represent how severe method was applied in an actual build. Using for instance @Sariel's "list of sins". Like an MOC -that has 3D printed part- would be HC7. One with custom-chromed parts would be HC2. HC stand for "heresy code" . And you extend the title of your moc or video with the code when you publish it, giving a straight forward information about how it should be considered. It's like the PEGI system in the tv and movie industry for age limits. If you couldn't decide yet if I'm speaking seriously I tell you, I don't know either. It's a rather strange idea, but not that bad. Is it? EDIT: As further I think this as better the idea appears to be. Here is why on my example: When I posted the drift wagon I had a bad taste in my moth. I wanted to share it for obvious reasons but I've expected being told off despite I've noted all those things doesn't match purity requirements. Well it did not happened and hereby thanks for the community swallowing it so politely. I know it was way out of the mainstream. But if I've used the code there HC7 I was gonna be more relaxed to release it. So from my point of view it isn't stigmatizing rather classification. Additional benefit if it spreads that just by using the code we could search for moc's on similar level. As the scale models have been lifted out from here for a reason, so it would separate the guideline of "judgement" of course in this case without having to change any particular layout of the forum.- 179 replies

I've found the opening post quite offensive too even though by those standards I'm one of worst heretics in this industry. Not because I don't like lego, I'm just not worshiping it. For me it is a tool. If I feel my toolbox is missing something I'll make an attempt to create it. Purist tend to behave like deeply religious people. Not the ones going to church on sunday but those who if couldn't evangelize you than curse you. Where is the tolerance? Why do we need politics in a beautyful hobby like lego? The other day I've got a comment on one of my youtube video: " Don't call this Lego...." The car in question contains about 1500 parts (let say) 9 of those are 3rd party including the 4 wheels. So what should I call it? I happened to have a titanium implant in my right arm due to an accident, so by the same logic I'm not a human being anymore? Actually the comment never appeared as the gentleman was coward enough to delete it straight away, but I had the notification email and of course a dislike at the same time. It was funny to read in some replies above here that "I'm a purist too with the exeption of..." What to say? Any exeption makes you non purist. All we talk about from there is the level of non-purism. I'm sad to see that talented builders like Appie being attacked on ridiculous reasons like taking a shock absorber appart. A part purposely built to allow disassembly without being damaged. Whats the next? We should not remove the tyre from the rim? Our civilisation in every meaning developed only by breaking traditions or rules. And usually those who did it first got burnt or prisoned for doing so. Heretics were the ones who helped the world move forward. Without them we still would heve the geocentric worldview. Technology is developing by the same way too. Religion in the other hand.... you get where I'm going with this.- 179 replies
