This is a great small set. It would look great as a gift with purchase or quick $5 gift idea in a poly bag. One suggestion is that the 6x8 tan plate is a bit unnatural. Sand flows and is chaotic so it needs to not have square corners. I suggest changing to a 6x6 with a curved corner plus a 2x6 (to get the full 6x8 dimension).

Looks great! I love the little details you have everywhere and especially the water pouring out of the pipe on the side. A couple small things I'd suggest: The roof looks a little too perfect. I see that you have the brown and black pieces to add some interest but you could add a bit more detail to the roof by have a few pieces missing or misshapen to show roof tiles that were blown off or broken. I like the red an blue awning that you have because it adds a splash of color to the otherwise earth toned building. Maybe consider adding something on the back of the building to add some color there. I'd suggest a colored flag or banner.

[ENTRY] Caribbean River Soldiers (Mini Set)
durazno33 replied to Rogue Redcoat's topic in Pirate MOCs
I miss these old minifig packs. We get too many star wars ones and not enough good ones for other themes. One suggestion on the accessories is adding some backpacks. As a kid only a few of my soldiers had backpacks which would be necessary if marching on land. Additionally, the epaulettes on the soldiers are all the same color. From what I understand epaulettes are used to signify rank so maybe changing the color of the epaulettes on the soldier with the tricornered hat to be yellow or green might add some variety while making the leader stand out a bit more. -
I agree with many of the other comments here about how well it fits into the theme. I do think the blue bandana on the pirate does a good job of highlighting him against the green backdrop. Here are a couple pointers: You have a palm tree and a bush that are on top of square grey bricks. Grey to me infers rock and the square blocks look a bit unnatural. How about you put the vegetation on the baseplate instead of the grey rocks and build out the rocks a bit more with a few slopes instead. The trap has two diagonal grey wall pieces. One has some printing on it. I would suggest swapping those two walls so the wall with the printing on it is facing the camera so that it can be more easily seen.

This is awesome! Definitely winner potential! One of my complaints about the original set I only discovered after owning it. From the pictures of the original the set appeared very full but part of that was because the catamaran's sail was covering the bare back right corner behind the stone statue. In your remake you have added two palm trees that are a bit too evenly spaced out which help fill the space but there is still some space for some texture or a small rock or plant to fill that awkward empty space that the original had. If you could make that area a stronger part, you would be undoing one of the shortcomings of the original set.

Excellent remake! I don't have much to say to make it better. Just an idea. Looking at the building from the side, the brown rifle blends in with the brown wood behind it. Maybe changing the gun to a black or dark grey color would make the gun stand out a bit more. Great job! I'd love to see this as an official set.

[ENTRY] Cross Bone Clipper Remake UPDATED!
durazno33 replied to Elephant Knight's topic in Pirate MOCs
The original set was a bit lacking in the aesthetic department for sure. Your remake is solid. Great job. One thing about this set is that crows nest piece is extremely expensive on Bricklink.com as it was only released in this set in this color. https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=30033&idColor=5#T=S&C=5&O={"color":5,"iconly":0} If you were to include it on your remake, it would instantly increase the bounty it would receive on the open seas! -
This is one of my favorite sets as my brother got this for Christmas one year and I was so jealous. When I eventually got to play with it, the anticipation build up made this set so much better. Nostalgia aside... Some of my complaints about the original that you have address here that I like: -The hull was curved but the bricks on the top front were at right angles. You have fix this buy putting the guard rail higher up and angling it to follow the curve of the front prow -There wasn't a good forward deck and you've added one and put the cargo there. Though, I think the cargo would be better stowed below, I do like the forward deck. -There wasn't a middle deck on the original. You've added some side decks for walking from the front of the ship to the back of the ship. I like this. -The cannon balls were stacked in the original. You have put them in a crate to store them. Looks great -The rudder in the original was prone to come loose if you picked the ship up from the front and back. You've put a much more stable rudder design. -The figure head is great! Feedback: -The rigging on the old ship had horizontal ropes so that it could be used to climb up to the crows nest. In your design, you have the outside ropes but I don't see how the sailor will be able to ascend it. If you have one more of those rubber cables, maybe adding one more of them to the middle might give it more of a feel of the old one? It wouldn't fix the lack of horizontal ropes but would fill the visual space some. -Missing the compass. For a little kid, the compass was a really cool part of the ship. Maybe add it back in? Great Job!

Looking much better. I like the changes though like has been said, the sand just increases the piece count without adding much. Good second version!

With people providing critics of a build, there will always be those who cannot bear to have their creations critiqued for improvement as doing so can require a level of maturity. So how will points be determined when a builder is too... dare I say "proud of their build" to enact any feedback? Will no points be awarded in that case for the feedback given?

[ENTRY] 6260/6257 Pirates - Shipwreck Island/ Castaway's Raft Remake
durazno33 replied to _R_R_'s topic in Pirate MOCs
A lot has already been said about this great remake. I'll only add a couple small points here. 1) The fire is a nice addition, however, the logs floating off the sand looks a bit odd. Maybe use 48723 with the round brick cylinders sticking off it? 2) The island could use a bit more rough sand. So like adding a couple rocks or 1x1 round light tan plates or a 2x2 round plate could add a bit more texture next to the fire. -
[ENTRY] 1889 Pirate's Treasure Hold Remake

So there has been a lot of feedback about how this has too many pieces to be an official Lego set. So rather than pointing out specifics, I'll give you some tools to help with this. 1) Count the number of pieces you have in this and try to reduce it by 10%. So if you have 250 pieces, reduce it by 25 pieces. This will help you revisit each piece and decide if you really need it. 2) Each piece type that Lego includes in a set requires more complexity to assemble into the box. Reduce the number of different types of pieces. For example: you have 3 different colors of palm leaves. Reducing this down to 2 colors will help reduce production costs. This process can also help with reducing the overall piece count I mentioned in step one. -
One way to make a remake build different from the original is to change the proportions a bit. Since the original build was 4 bricks wide plus wheels, what if you remade it as a 5 brick wide build? This would give you more room for more guns and center the "tail" of the gun. A good starting piece to give a creative starting point could be the 1x5 technic plate: https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=32124#T=C

[ENTRY] 2015 Pirates Shipwreck Defense Revisited
durazno33 replied to eldiano's topic in Pirate MOCs
I like the idea of a modular bay. However, to be an official Lego set, Lego would reduce the number of minifigures. For the size of this, there are just too many. Also, for a larger set, Lego tends to add exclusive minifigures. Maybe mix and match the figures to create your own "pirate king" or "pirate queen" to make this a special set to purchase. -
[ENTRY] 31109 Pirate Ship Creator 3 in 1 revisited
durazno33 replied to eldiano's topic in Pirate MOCs
The design of the sails on the original creator set was one that bugged me for sure. I really didn't like the brick built sails so it's nice to see that you fixed that. I also like that you added in a proper "ship's wheel" instead of that odd wheel from the original. Another thing that I didn't much like about the original was that there were only 3 pirates. A ship this size could definitely use at least one more pirate. I'm not sure the purpose of adding a wall between the front of the ship and the back. It would make it harder for sailors to move around and without a door is hard to understand. Maybe add some ladders or a doorway?- 11 replies

The design is solid. Good color pallet. Just the right dimensions for a small vessel. Feedback: -The rudder only has one hook holding it on. This would be unstable in real life. Consider replacing it with a two hook design. Like this: -I didn’t see any cannon balls. What will the cannon fire? Maybe add some. -Have you considered smoothing out the sails using tile instead of plate? It might be too thick in the end but something to consider. -From what I understand on a ship of that time, there would be sailors and soldiers on a ship. They would have a division of responsibilities with sailors doing the sailing and the soldiers doing the fighting. Maybe change out one of the soldiers for a traditionally looking sailor.

I've been a fan of the Lego pirates themes since I was a kid and am thrilled to see the theme get these awesome sets over the last few years. My local AFOL club just did a pirate themed display for a large convention in June and so Pirates is fresh on the mind. I'm looking forward to see what people build!

As for the $500 pain point, I mean price point, I would think that we should get more than this. From the pictures it looks smaller than the Hogwarts castle which was $400.
-
I had the same problem. Searching by 10305 wasn't showing most of these items until they were all sold out. I had to just search for newest items before I saw anything. Pretty lame of Lego.
-
Wow, Lego needs to get its act together so that their customer can actually buy their product and not just sell out instantly.
-
Really? In which country? I've been checking for updates 2 or 3 times day and haven't seen anything.
-
Today and yesterday, when I search for items and have "show out of stock" items checked, I don't see out of stock items anymore. Is that just happening in the US or are other people having that issue? This is causing the forestmen chest piece and hat to not show up anymore.
-
Hopefully those that wanted them got them as the FM parts are sold out already.
-
The forester's hat in green is now listed but is out of stock. Before today, it wasn't even listed. Hopefully that means we'll have it in stock at some point.

Here's a quick idea on how to make a wheat field more dynamic. I take the old style of wheat and add a small modification to allow for a more random configuration.
