  1. I think what you have is a solid build. I do have a couple ideas. -When I look at it from the front, the build is very flat and square. I think it needs some variation in the height so that it isn't a square build. If you put an awning over the door to the jail, that would give some shape to the back. On the top, you could also add some shade as it would be natural to want to sit on that bench in the shade. You could do this by draping a sail or other fabric at an angle from 3 or four vertical poles. This seems more like a house than a fort. Maybe remove the crenulations and put in a railing or something else to make it less fort like. The cannon is fine as a good pirate gentleman would keep his fine cannot to impress his house guests as well as keep back nearby ships. Just a couple suggestions. Happy building!
  2. Looking like a great foundation for something spectacular to come!
  3. I do like that you included the brick built cannon instead of the regular one. However, the brick built cannon is a bit smaller so could you shrink the opening a little bit between the walls and maybe put it on a small platform? It seems a bit too small for the opening.
  4. I always love it when sea builds have this style of water. It looks really nice and can take a lot of time to place. At a quick glance, the yellow seems to be competing with the red as the secondary color in this build. I would suggest using red as the secondary color and yellow as a tertiary color. You could do that by replacing the yellow brick layer with a plate of yellow and a layer of white instead to reduce the amount of yellow in the middle of the build. As for the structure, I'm looking at the main tower and wondering how it would support it's own weight. The bottom section is a square that transitions to an octogon that sticks out wider some from the base. Then it continues up and has an even wider top than the second level. That setup would lend itself to falling outward because of the weight sticking out from the main build. In short, I'd suggest making the base octogon shape as well instead of a square. If that is too much work, then at least widen the first floor a little more. This would require a significant rework so I understand if you decide not to do it. Just my take.
  5. I like how you used the printed island baseplates. That is clever. Way to tie in the other sets from that theme. It very much looks like the set we never got in that theme. A couple quick things: In your second and third picture, your green soldier on the wall is looking into his helmet instead of straight forward. It looks kinda funny and is a quick face turn. And your black cannon balls are hard to distinguish as cannon balls and not just parts of the building (due to the floor being black). If you changed the color to light gray, they would stand out a bit more.
  6. This is super well done. I don't have anything to add critically. I like the colors, dimensions, foundation, rockwork, tower... all in all it's great!
  7. Your build looks like a polished set pull right out of a poly bag and assembled. Well done.
  8. Looks like you have a good start on this. I'd love to see where you go from here. Just a word of caution against having to have everything perfect. I organized a large diorama for the LUG I attend and this guy worked on a part a bit at a time for 3 years trying to get all the greebling just right and never finished. In fact he was still working on it at the display with parts he brought. You have a lot of great details so hopefully you have time to get it all completed with the same attention to detail that you have had up to now.
  9. One thing that could help you here is to tell a story here. You have a dock with a fishing boat coming into port. What other story elements could you add? If you add more fish to the boat, it would imply a good day fishing. You could have a shop selling fish which would imply that the fisherman sells his fish there. You imply that the soldier is checking for a permit. Maybe you could add another merchant minifigure that is doing the checking and the soldier is just the muscle to cease any improper cargo. Just a few story ideas to build out your scene. Happy building!
  10. The profile of this build is good. It has varied heights and levels. It would make an impressive piece for kids to play with in a battle against a pirate ship. One thing I don't understand is why you have the "red entry way" in the lower level? Wouldn't that just allow for enemies to enter through the wall? Why not put another door there or some half height crenulations? Also why for such large fort is there only one cannon? I would recommend adding at least one more. You also have 4 of the blue imperial flags. I think it would look better with only one large flag and either one small flag or 3 small flags so that there are an odd number. Generally odd numbers are more aesthetically pleasing (think the Rule of Odds).
  11. This is excellent! The design is well done, colors are spot on. I like the color choice for the blue pirate torsos so that they stand out in the build from the earth tones. The roof is great the rock, sand, and water look good. The height of the build and framing is just right so that the picture looks like a pyramid which is a pleasing shape. I can't say I have any real suggestions. Well done!
  12. This is really nice. I think going out on a limb with using the nutcracker minifigure looks distinguished. It makes this stand out from the other builds that stuck to the blue and red imperials.
  13. Honestly, I'm not a fan of the figurehead in general. Figureheads are for large ships. Having one on a small sale boat seems odd. I do like the rest of the build. Especially your little gun as it is a much more realistic size. When I see this size boat with a full cannon, I can only wonder how long before the boat capsizes.
  14. I really like this but your picture is so dark. I'm thinking if you put this on a blue background and added a bit more light that would really help. The build is very much on one side of the color wheel. Red, brown, orange. I'm wondering if you could change a 2 pieces to add some contrast. So instead of an orange shell, you could benefit from a white one. Instead of a brown spear, you use a black one to make it stand out against the boat. Great job on this little build!
  15. Your remake makes me think, "If Lego were to make that old set today, it would look like this" so good job on that. The original series was so oddly colored so the coloring here doesn't bother me as you are being true to that year of classic pirate. I will say it seems a bit short of a ship. It's a little oddly proportioned length to height wise. I'm thinking two bricks longer (added to the blue middle) would fix that so it doesn't seem so short and chubby. Also the red torso-ed minifigure with the red epaulets seems a bit too much red. Maybe change the red epaulets to gold or blue or some other color than red. It would save the poor minifigure from getting teased for in a "plad on plad" moment. ;)
  16. This is very well structured, and laid out. Good color combos and texturing. I don't have much to add that hasn't been said other than that pirate looks way to happy to be facing down two crocodiles. Maybe he's just really confident he can get out of the situation easily? Does he have an alternative terrified face on the back of his head? That might be the only thing I would add.
  17. Looking good! Nice color selection, texturing, and sizing. One small suggestion is that the lanterns are hung a bit low and would block the soldier's view (as they are at face level) Maybe consider raising them up a brick so they are out of the line of sight for the minifigures.
  18. Adding a lot of cobles can be very part intensive. I like that piece for a roof. You will have to play with it to get the correct pitch angle for the roof but should look good. What color will you go with? It doesn't look like they make that in red. Just dark red.
  19. The roof technique is a nice look. My concern is that is appears very brittle since those 1x1 cylinders are not connected to each other on the middle building and would very easily come apart. I like how on the building on the right you have them connected to each other one brick from the end. I'd recommend doing that to the middle building to add some stability to the build. (During transport or during play not having more stability could have a problem though generally not during display) I like the look of your tower. It adds nice height to the build to provide an opposite to the low height building on the left. Might I suggest moving the telescope lookout to into the tower instead of being next to the cannon? Or adding something else inside of the tower to give it some military function? (maybe even an alarm bell?)
  20. Personally, I don't understand this build. Why would you have a wall with a huge hole in it next to a small dock? What purpose does the wall serve if it is so short and has a hole without a door? Now if the whole was the result of a cannon ball, I could understand this more. How about that small addition of a wall section that can be removed?
  21. I agree with this assessment though the use of so many dark colors lacks some contrast. Adding light tan sand as was suggested could do it or using a lighter colored barrel to highlight it. A reddish brown barrel should do it. My point being too much dark so it needs some light colors to add some contrast.
  22. I agree with the comment from Mazin, having the tower off to one side looks odd especially since it needs an arch to support it underneath to be level. Maybe consider centering it more on the island. Other than that, maybe adding an orange crab would give some extra color.
  23. This would be a great ship to add to a diaorma display to go up against a pirate armada. Looks good. My feedback might be a bit more of a personal opinion. The mixed colors of the figure head appear a bit odd. I'd suggestion going with either all blue or all black. All black would stick out from the rest of the blue of the ship and highlight it nicely but all blue would work as well. (Also I suggest no printing on the figure torso)
  24. This is definitely and upgrade from the original for sure. I'm thinking that if you have the bricks a few little details here or there could help modernize it a bit more. For example, more moderns sets like to use tiles on top instead of having studs showing. What that would mean here is you could put some 1x2 tiles on top of your crenellations and possibly some 1x1 round grey and dark cobles on the lower level to smooth out some of the studs. This would be a fairly easy change to add that much more detail.
  25. What you have is a good start. This build would benefit from you to "accessorizing it" a bit. I would recommend switching the dark grey out for white and nugget colored bricks. The dark grey to me indicates rock and where you have it would be an awkward place for rock to be. I think your set would be fine with one flag instead of two as even numbers can be harder to make aesthetically pleasing. Add some clutter. If you add some more cannon balls, some more barrels, some extra weapons, it will go a long ways in adding the extra detail to make it feel "lived in" Add a ladder to get to the cannon on the top Add a couple 1x2 and 1x1 tan plates to your sand to add more texture.
