42110 - Land Rover Defender
Bartybum replied to 1gor's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
@chlego It’s fairly normal. It’s a nice set but the standard drivetrain design is really hard to get right. I’d recommend stripping it down and rebuilding jb70’s pimped up version on Rebrickable. Apparently that one has a better designed drivetrain -

EDIT: after more consideration, it does seem that a differential would indeed not be possible to fit in the rear axle without shifting the engine forwards or the rear axle backwards. The price is still a big shame, but I can now accept that the lack of a differential probably isn’t for lack of trying. -
Hell yeah I dig it, but shouldn’t the rear axle steer the other way? Or is this car weird

EDIT: please ignore this reply, I’ve thought about it for some time and am now satisfied r.e. the lack of a differential. This begs the following question: How would you feel if they removed the engine and drivetrain completely? A differential is an important mechanical and aesthetic component to a car’s drivetrain. They came for both with the Wrangler, despite someone here instantly showing that it’s very much possible to fit an entire drivetrain and realistic suspension system into the compact chassis. I don’t like the argument that “it doesn’t matter for the target audience”. It’s lazy and dismisses the importance of functions to the Technic theme. The fact that it’s still playable even without a differential is irrelevant, because a differential would have given exactly the same outcome. -

Simple hub battery boxes confirmed (source: Instagram) to be coming in January! Set number 88015, no confirmed price yet -
For a 300€ set, what functions would you expect to see on an expedition truck? I’d take a crane truck any day of the week. I don’t want to pay $530AUD for a tarted up box on wheels. That being said, my prediction of a crane truck didn’t take the heavy duty tow truck into account, so now I’m not so certain that it will be one. I hope it's one of these:

$90AUD and no differential. What a lol -
I’m gonna make an educated guess here, because this ~$530AUD price has me scratching my head. I’m predicting that it’s a four motor RC crane truck with a motorised compressor and slewing, but with manually operated pneumatic outriggers and crane. Both 42099 and 42114 were ~$400AUD here, and were similar sets in motor count without pneumatics. For the piece count, I’m predicting that it’ll be similar to the Arocs, if not slightly less. This does seem like a pretty advanced prediction for a set, but the Mercedes Technic license has always produced incredible sets, and this would certainly fit the bill.
