2-10-4 "Texas" type steam engine with 909 Limited passenger tr
Murdoch17 replied to Murdoch17's topic in LEGO Train Tech
What creation are you talking about? I'd like to see this 8-wide 42-long monster! Also, the green switch should work with almost any train... it's the red one that's the problem!- 9 replies

The new nose design looks good! Though are you using the extra small wheels (Like so: http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=50254 ) or the slightly larger ones: http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=55423c01 ? I have the extra small ones on my 7 wide streetcars, and I can't run them due to the squeaking!
-
I agree with you, a water or coaling tower (maybe both next to each other) would be nice additions. I also think the depot as a whole looks great, especially with the dark red splotches against the regular red, with the dark green windows. You seem to be really good at color blocking, (such as red and dark red, with grays) which is a skill I (really) need to improve on. EDIT: Fixed grammar issues and typos

I now have 13 locos, 4 streetcars, 33 passenger cars, 13 freight cars, 6 train buildings, and 7 town buildings. That's 76 items total, not counting space!

Modular Collapsing Train Bridge - RC / PF tracks
Murdoch17 replied to Murdoch17's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Thank you, I used to watch that show a lot! That's a good idea, but LDD physics (specifically lack of gravity) might make that a bit of headache. I mean how much length could I put on the breakable section before it starts to bend under the engine's weight? 9V won't work because of the huge gap between the broken an not broken sections. I can't reconfigure it because without that gap, because if I do, the bridge won't break.- 8 replies

Mod note: Zombie-bumping this because of major updates to the structure and the possibility of really building this is pretty high. I hope this is ok. This bridge was inspired by Bad Cop's Pursuit (set 70802) and the short section of railroad bridge included with that set. When I first saw it, I thought it would make a great play feature for a train bridge that is actually usable by trains. Here is the result of all that working and reworking: 12 sections of PF / RC train track (It won't work with 9V, sorry!) with 1 section "failure point" plus 2 studs of space to separate the moving from non-moving items and allow the hinge to do it's job. The track leading up to the "failure point" as I call it, is raised ever so gently at an angle of (at most) 1 1/3 bricks high per 1 section of track. (The angle of ascent / descent depends on which part of track you are on, but for the most part it's consistent.) The design of the bridge is modular so that you can easily disassemble the bridge for transport. It disassembles into 2 lower ramp sections consisting of 4 tracks each and 2 flat sections placed onto plates with the 1 "failure point" module consisting of a hinged (on one end) two-track section in the middle. The bridge when the track is safe to cross: the pins are inserted and it should be stable. Naturally, a very heavy engine will snap the Technic rods in half, breaking the bridge permanently. Thus you can only use this engine with Small engines like my 2-6-0 + it's consist, (AKA the Lone Ranger train) the My Own Train series engines, or something of comparable weight. I don't think putting a articulated such as a Union Pacific "Big Boy" or even a non articulated Pennsylvania "T1" would look very good on this bridge, as these (among other large types) are longer than the bridge gap itself. This is how it works: Their are two hidden Technic rods under the track that should allow trains to pass by safely overhead. Pull the Technic connector and your bridge collapses. Lift the bridge up and move the rod back in to reset the bridge for the next adventure. To give you a bit of perspective on this mode's progression as a concept, here is the original idea from February 2015. It was a lot more complex with two rods and two break points, plus in all likely hood it would not have held up well if carried with the flimsy base-plate underneath. Nowadays we have only one drop point and reinforced regular plates! (this model is not in the LDD file, and is just for demonstration purposes) Updated LDD file for the newer bridge model: http://www.moc-pages...1472495977m.lxf As usual, all comments are welcome, be they questions, suggestions, or complaints. Thanks for reading!

Classic Space functionality meets Star Wars fashion with this mash-up of a Jedi Delta-7b Starfighter in Classic Space colors. This model is actually a amalgamation of two Star Wars sets: The two sets are number 9484, Saesee Tiin's Jedi Starfighter (link: http://www.bricklink...em.asp?S=9498-1 ) and number 8093, Plo Koon’s Jedi Starfighter (link: http://www.bricklink...em.asp?S=8093-1 ) The classic space logo should be on this piece: http://www.bricklink...sp?P=30363pb021 The model features red and green directional lights, trans-yellow canopy, (as per Classic Space regulations) two laser cannons under the wings, two rocket engines on the rear, three landing gear legs, and a escape pod made up of the cockpit. The engines are located underneath the wings, near the landing gear. You can also see the cockpit controls in this shot. (NOTE: I don't plan on building this model, but it looked too cool not to post. I call it a Beta class Advanced Prototype star fighter) Here is the LDD file: http://www.mocpages....1424706854m.lxf

2-10-4 "Texas" type steam engine with 909 Limited passenger tr
Murdoch17 replied to Murdoch17's topic in LEGO Train Tech
It handles them okay, I just can't put a switch facing outwards immediately after a curve, because the yellow switch stand gets in the way. Also, two straights are needed to "lead" the engine into my XL shed after a curve.... I'll post a picture if you don't understand what I'm trying to say. EDIT: here are the pictures: The green switch represents something the engine can do without issue, while the red means it will bump into the switch stand and derail. However, if you move the red switch to the left two whole straight tracks, it will work fine. The green curve represents a the healthy distance from the shed from which the engine can enter safely. Any further away than two tracks, it becomes a bit pointless, but any closer and you enter the territory of the red curve. That red curve means the engine will hit the side of the shed and derail, plus it will damage the shed wall. I hope this helps! If you are talking about the real life photo, I have since fixed that, as that picture was taken in mid-November 2014 and is now out-of-date.- 9 replies

I keep having dreams about parts or sets Lego will never make, sucj as: -Completely trans-colored minifigure -having my favorite steam engine replicated in an official set (Frisco #1522, a 4-8-2 Mountain type that lives in my hometown train museum) -going into the Lego store and finding train wheels in regular and Big Ben Bricks-style small sizes on the PaB wall. -having my own custom 2-6-0 dark green steamer + matching passenger train made into a Lego set -owning a custom minfigure of me, like the ones that high-up Employees of LEGO get or -all of the above at once!

First uploaded in November 2012, this passenger train originally had six 8-wide cars consisting of a baggage car, four passenger coaches, and a observation car. It was pulled by my 2-8-4 steam engine for a while before I whittled down the number of the (slightly heavy) cars to a more manageable total of four. Over these two years I have modified them a lot, taking out the detailed interior and replacing the complex window assembly with something less fragile. The last time I changed the train was October 2014, when I modified the baggage car to a half baggage / half passenger coach (this is known as a combine) and lengthened the 2-8-4 Berkshire type into a 2-10-4 Texas type. After I originally had built the six cars I realized the only thing that could pull my 8 wide cars was a 8 wide engine. The coaches just didn't look very good with a 6 wide locomotive at the front, but the opposite was true about 6 wide coaches with an 8 wide engine. So after much internal debate over the possibility of reducing the size of the train cars, I found a workable solution that looks good. This is that solution, plus their is an added bonus of having enough parts left over from the "slimming down" of the four 8 wide train cars that I could build a third passenger car. This makes me happy, because a full size 2-10-4 that can pull 10+ heavyweight cars in real life looks silly as a LEGO model pulling only 4 coaches of the same style. (although five isn't much better, it's good enough for my purposes) In case anyone want to see my original inspiration for these cars, here is a vintage 2009 LEGO model of "Galaxy Express 999", which caused me to select reddish brown heavyweight coaches as the color / style of choice. (Link to Brickshelf: http://www.brickshel...ry.cgi?f=374748 ) The name 909 Limited is a combination of this train and the Beatles song "One after 909", which is sort-of about a train. (If you are looking for said song, it's on the album, "Let It Be") The rear of the 6 wide train cars feature an observation platform, with a single tail light under the roof. Statistics for the coaches: Train name: 909 Limited Car Types: Baggage / coach (1) Coach (3) Observation (1) Configuration (per car): 4 wheels on two bogies Designer: Pullman Car Company Build Date: 1924 Builder: Pullman Car Company Current Owner: Brick Railway Systems Length: 28 studs Width: 6 studs Height: 10 â…” bricks Here is an updated look at the 2-10-4 I modified from Anthony Sava's Berkshire. I didn't do much this time, except for rounding out the originally flat middle segment of the boiler. As before, the letters spelling out "Brick Railway Systems" go on the tender sides, while "6297" goes on the cab sides and tender rear, next to the ladder. Background for the locomotive: Engine Type: Steam, heavy freight Configuration: 2-10-4 Engine Class: Texas Designer: (unknown) Build Date: 1939 Road number(s): 6297 Builder: Lima Locomotive works Current Owner: Brick Railway Systems Length: 81 studs (with tender) Width: 8 studs Height: 10 bricks Top Speed: 100 MPH Please note: the pistons rod are missing two pieces that are laid off to the side of the locomotive. They do work in real life but LDD doesn't like them being attached. LDD file for the whole train: http://www.mocpages....1424626224m.lxf And if anyone doubts the fact that I've built this engine and have photographed it and the prevous version of the coaches here's the proof: (Please note, these are cellphone camera shots... they are not the best, but they work for me.) Steam loco #6297, in real life (this photo show an older form of the model, as the tender is now closer to the engine and the tender wheels have been changed to the form in the LDD screenshots. Combination baggage car / passenger coach in 8 wide The two 8 wide heavyweight coaches ...and finally, the observation car (8 wide version) with rear deck and number board. (The black tiles on the rear say "909", the name of the train.) Comments, questions, and complaints are always welcome!

American 0-6-0 saddle tank steam locomotive - Brick Railway Systems
Murdoch17 replied to Murdoch17's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Sorry for the double post, but the LDD file has now been fixed. I moved the wheels one two holes close together, and shortened the drive rods. I also fixed a structural issue with the boiler. The parted out price is $55 in US money plus some parts I already own. The custom wheels (two blind, four flanged) cost $18 from Big Ben Bricks, bringing the total $73. (shipping and handling not included) EDIT: typo correction- 4 replies

I'm probably going to borrow the bi-plane design for my Johnny Thunder MOCs. In the future though, I want the Headless Specter in a set... he was (and remains!) my favorite Scooby Doo monster. Well, that and the 10,00 Volt ghost.

In Space, no one can hear you build! Classic Space - Dreadnought class battle cruiser (Please note: the original Starcraft design was by Eurobricks user Sunnyx and was from 2010, not me. I changed it to CS colors and updated it.) Topic: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=106090 LDD file: http://www.mocpages.com/user_images/80135/1424445098m.lxf

I did not make this. Eurobricks user named Sunnyx created the original LEGO model, a Star Craft "Battlecruiser" in July 2010. (Here is a picture of that version: http://www.brickshel...y.cgi?i=4569048 ) I downloaded it today and made it into Classic Space colors, along with some changes to the engines, plus the addtion of a Classic Space logo (unprinted here, but this part in real life: http://www.bricklink...sp?P=30363pb021 ) on the front, just above the fighter hanger. (This model is designated to be for my brother, Austin, and his classic space fleet. It may or or may not be built, as it has an quite large 1380 parts!) Background: Designed and built right after the first Blacktron War and before the formation of the Space Police, the "Dreadnought" class was designed to take the punishment of any Blacktron wepaon developed up to 1989 and give back the punishment in triplicate. The Dreadnought class numbered only five strong when 1991 rolled around, bringing the Blacktron (this time the Future Generation, successors to the original Blacktron) back into war with the Space Police and Classic Space. The Blacktron forces received a pounding from the Dreadnoughts, but not before finding a way around the 1989-vintage scanner systems and destroying the original Dreadnought with a concentrated barrage on the hyperdive system. (a weak spot for the Dreadnoughts is the four hyperdrives, located on the above and below the main wings on the left and right sides) The end of the second war and the supposed erasing of the Blacktron scourge meant that over the next 10 years many Classic Space leaders promised to decommission the Dreadnoughts, but they stayed put, slowly becoming more outdated as the years went by. Only after the Neo-Blacktron sightings and Benny the-1980-something space guy coming to head the Classic Space fleet did the task of revitalizing and revamping the Dreadnoughts get finished. As of 2015, the four Dreadnought's remaining are being surpassed by Super Dreadnoughts, the first of five will be coming off the assembly line sometime in the near future, probably within 2 years. The rear of the ship, with it's four main sub-light drives. The ship features a hanger for smaller fighter ships on it's nose, which can hold up to 20 "Galaxy" class deep space fighters, plus their is space in a secondary hanger for 15 exo-suits. The unlucky Blacktron ships caught in the crosshairs of this mega ship would be subject to 70 laser cannons spread through out the ship's superstructure, 10 tractor beam ports that are mostly situated around the bow, and two retractable Ion cannons located on both left and right wings, in between the hyperspace engines. Top view. The frontal wings hold the star fighter bays, while the rear wings hold the hyper and sublight engines. LDD file: http://www.mocpages....1424445098m.lxf Comments welcome!

American 0-6-0 saddle tank steam locomotive - Brick Railway Systems
Murdoch17 replied to Murdoch17's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Thanks for your comment, but the gears-as-wheels is a old LDD technique, I've seen it on several peoples digital builds, such as HunterDobbs. (That's who I got the original piston design from, I just stretched it to fit the frame.) Also, I don't use motors for my trains, with 9V they are ridiculously expensive, and the PF components do not fit most of my 13 locomotives. Personally, I just hand power the trains around my layout. (Speaking of drive rods, I have discovered an error with the LDD model I uploaded. I will fix the file when I can.)- 4 replies

Barretts Station & Signal Tower - LDD MOCs
Murdoch17 replied to Murdoch17's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Sorry to bump this topic, but I recreated in LDD my current Lego trains layout + some buildings to be bought in the future. Here it is: Barrett's Station - Trains-N-Town Layout Their is one glitch with the ldd file, as you can see with the one misplaced track piece.... it fits in real life, but not in LDD. The whole layout is 4 feet x 8 feet. The buildings seen here include Barretts Station, (I have this already) a Victorian signal tower, (not yet built) coal and water towers, (I built these last December) and the Train shed with workshop. (I have most of it, but it still needs work.) The trains I am using are not shown here, but they do exist: my 2-6-0 with matching dark green train cars, (built last December) 2-8-0 with freight train (still need to get the engine plus wide vision caboose) The 0-6-0ST switcher will sit on this layout somewhere. I also have 7 town buildings including the Backwash Saloon, Stone Bank, Post office (not shown here), Bob's Adventure Supplies, Town Hall, Sam Sinister's Victorian Mansion, timbered house, Captain's Daughter Tavern, and the local Lego club's (Iron LUG to be accurate) meeting house sitting in the middle of the layout. (I don't have the town hall or Sinister Mansion yet, by the way!) The total piece count is 10,064 bricks, so it is about as big as LDD will let me go. It's a big file, so be warned: it will strain your computer! LDD file: http://www.mocpages....1424459838m.lxf NOTE: The train shed has it's own topic, as does the dark green passenger train, the 1960's freight train, and saddle tank switcher (the coal and water towers are in the same topic as the train shed). 0-6-0 steam heavy-duty switcher This model is an Americanized version of Scotnick's Thomas & friends model "Stanley" (link to that engine on Flickr: https://www.flickr.c...N07/8732762280/ ) with some new running gear provided by Hunter Dobbs from his model of the Thomas & Friends engine "Lady". (link to that engine on Flickr: https://www.flickr.c...02/16562999581/ ) The engine features a new headlight on top of the smokebox and is a little longer than the last version by about four studs. The pistons (hopefully) will work in real life, as I messed with and extended Hunter Dobbs design to include a third axle. The engine is going to be numbered 4990, with the number going on the saddle tank and the letters BRS going on the rear of the locomotive, right between the two red stripes on the coal bunker. NOTE: This model requires custom Big Ben Bricks small steam engine drivers, as in 4 flanged and 2 blind. The gears seen here are placeholders and will NOT work on track! (Link to Big Ben Bricks: http://www.bigbenbricks.com/ ) The rear of the locomotive. Background: Built in 1922 by H.K. Porter, this steam locomotive is of a saddle tank design, (that means it carries the water over-the-top of the boiler in tanks, kinda like a saddle on a horse) as part of an order for 25 engines by Brick Railway Systems, numbered 4975 to 5000. The class was built for yard work, though some were sent out onto the main lines to haul commuter trains when the need arose. This engine class features red stripes on the sides and over the tanks on top of the boiler. I will be purchasing this engine after the parts for locomotive shed I posted on February 15th. LDD file: http://www.mocpages.com/user_images/80135/1428605637m.lxf 0-4-0 steam dockyard switcher This was originally set 3740, Small Locomotive from the My Own Train series. I revamped the 2001 set, adding Big Ben Brick medium wheels and working pistons courtesy of Hunter Dobbs. NOTE: All four of the wheels are removed from them LDD model. The proper parts are available at the Big Ben Bricks website, and are not in LDD. (You need four of the "Medium Flanged Drivers")The number of the engine (3007) goes on the side of the boiler, while the letters "BRS" go on the side of the cab. Fictional background: Built in 1923 by Baldwin Locomotive Works for Brick Railway Systems (BRS), engine 3007 was part of a 250 strong class of switchers made for the tight industrial & dockyard trackage of Brick Railway Systems. The class spread from number 3000 to 3250. They were painted in classic BRS black with a red stripe along the base. LDD file: http://www.mocpages.com/user_images/80135/1428604656m.lxf Thought, Comments, and questions are all welcome! (EDIT 9-15-2015: Fixed the LDD file and pictures, plus I added a another switcher to the first post.)
